I feel the same! I don’t see the point in listening to audio books while sitting on my couch – I’d rather read them if I’m not doing anything. So I only listen to it them I’m doing something else, in which case something always distracts me so I’m afraid I miss some important parts cos I can’t focus properly. Maybe somebody has an idea on how to properly enjoy them?
I’m on my second book now and listen to them whilst ironing and cleaning and once in a blue moon when I’m in the car by myself! I must admit I don’t sit down and listen! X
If I’m doing something light such as dishes, laundry, or coloring, I can concentrate on an audio book. If I do something more, I lose my concentration on the book. It’s a fine balance for me.
It does take some practice to get your mind used to being “read to” again… I suggest not having anything else on that might distract you, like tv, radio… Facebook ?. And not just sitting down. I always listen to audio books when I can’t hold a book but want to read. So… When I crochet (love this combo), do chores around the house (anything from ironing to folding laundry to doing the dishes), when I’m on a longer drive, walk the dog alone, I’m having a shower and getting ready…
Do something that your brain doesn’t have to focus on too much, but that you have to do, and give it another shot. Find a book you know you’d love and mentally prepare yourself that it might take time to get used to.
I live in a rural area with a long commute and can’t put my car into ‘drive’ without an audiobook. But if I am in traffic or in bad weather I have to turn it off — for safety and because I can’t concentrate on driving and listening. I never listen to one otherwise. You have to have the right conditions.
I used to listen to podcasts while I worked, so it was a pretty easy transition for me. Obviously, some audiobooks are better than others, and some genres I find too difficult to listen to. I cannot listen to a fantasy novel, I get too lost, but can listen to ten thrillers in a row. I also sometimes listen to them when I’m walking somewhere instead of music, or as everyone else said, while doing chores.
Keep practicing. Listening is a skill. As you get better at listening to audiobooks, you’ll be amazed at what other areas in your life improve with better listening .

I use them while running or during my 40 minute drive to work.
I have the same issue. I can read till my eyes cross and then longer but audio books make my mind soar.

Good luck and enjoy! ? x
Same. My mind drifts.

What everyone says here….you need to be doing something like driving or cooking….just sitting and listening at home would be difficult
Most likely You are a visual learner/reader. It’s the same for a lot of us!
