happy to read both, I’ve a degree in animal behaviour and worked with animals of all kinds on and off for 11 years so happy to read pretty much anything
One of my favorite books is Mind of the Raven by Bernd Heinrich, an ornithologist at Cornell. Not dry and so fascinating. Read it and wanted to find a raven to befriend (sadly, they’re mostly in western Maryland). I also loved The Secret Life of Lobsters. Books like these opened my eyes to how very smart animals are and how they need to be to survive. I also loved My Dog Skip by Willie Morris. Sweet memoir.
The “All Creatures Great & Small” series! About a Yorkshire Veterinarian and his encounters on the farms with animals! I have the entire series, I’m sure you’ll love it!…?
George MacDonald’s A Rough Shaking is all about a young boy’s friendships with animals, and his novel Sir Gibbie, though it has broader themes, has some great bits about the hero bonding with dogs, in particular…
Deric longdon wtites great cat books. Anything by james herriot. Kieran larwood writes a great trilogy about rabbits. Its like watership down meets lord of the rings ?
ETA: just noticed “about animals so disregard my suggestions.? Where The Crawdads Sing, The Hate U Give, Bird Box, This Will Only Hurt A Little, and The Sound of Gravel are some recent favorites.
The Search by Nora Roberts (about a woman and her Search and Rescue dog). Also Dean Koontz “A Big Little Life” (a memoir about his Golden Retriever, Trixie). Both were very good.
Oh yes – “The Eighty Dollar Champion: Snowman, The Horse That Inspired a Nation (author Elizabeth Letts) and if you have not read it, Seabiscuit: An American Legend was an excellent book (Laura Hillenbrand). Happy reading!
@Janet didn’t like this at all. Story went nowhere. Guy runs away from home. Then just goes back again. No clear story arc. Never clear if murderer gets caught.
Love, life and elephants by dame daphne sheldrick. One of the best books i ever read and truly made me want to have more adventure! She died this year and i felt so sad because that book meant so much to me! A must read!
Totally, All Creatures Great and Small. If you can get an audio of the book, I recommend that too because the accents and phrases of the Yorkshire Dales are priceless and add to the stories beyond measure.
Black Beauty, War Horse. The James Herriot books.
black beauty is one of my faves, one of few books I will happily reread
Big fan of war horse too 🙂
I’ll definitely look in to the James Herriot books

The Plague Dogs by Richard Adams. I liked it better than his other book, Watership Down.
Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult contains beautiful passages about elephants ?
Beautiful Joe. Written in 1893 by Marshall Saunders, it is written from the dog’s POV, which makes it a rather enjoyable middle grade read!
