I agree about the second one, but you should give the third one a shot, I thought it was the best of the three and have seen several reviews on here saying the same thing. I almost gave up because the second one wasn’t good, but was glad I stuck to it for the third.
I read the first one and listened to the next two. I consider them light stories. Kind of like watching a sitcom. It’s not going to change your life, but it helps pass the time.
I started the first one and didn’t even finish. @Diane, I like your analogy of a sitcom…. Or maybe a lifetime movie, but I decided I wanted more, even to just pass the time.
I read the first one and thought it was an entertaining but light read… As stated above, like a sitcom. Like everyone else I keep hearing the second one is not that good but the third one is great, so I’m thinking about reading them.
I think for his character it wasn’t if you are severely disabled life isn’t worth living, it was because he had such a life changing accident that to him his life wasn’t worth living anymore. Must be such a huge decision to decide your going to commit assisted suicide ?
I discussed this book at a Library Book Club, most of the attendees were retired. It gave some insight into the premise from a different perspective than mine. It wasn’t my favorite book, but the discussion it sparked was interesting.
I don’t think it’s over-rated (I loved both the book and the movie) but I do think the hype around how how heart-breaking the book is is over-rated. I’m the sort of person who cries at the drop of a hat, but this book didn’t move me to tears (the movie did, with the added music – that gets me every time). I can’t go into my reasons without potential spoilers, but let’s just say that I have read far more heart-breaking novels (eg “Lenny’s Book of Everything” is truly heart-breaking).
I think it depends! I read it before I “heard” about it. I thought it was really good. If I heard of the “hype” I might not have liked it. I would suggest watching the movie. If you like the movie, you’ll LOVE the book.
I liked it, and the sequels. But as an able bodied person with friends with physical disabilities, I found myself wishing she had consulted with a person with a disability. Some things didn’t seem quite right.
She did! And she based the book on an article she read about real person (an athlete I think) who became physically disabled, without giving away the ending, then had the same storyline as the book.
Okay, that is cool! Still a couple parts that didn’t ring true, but I suppose everyone with a spinal cord injury experiences it differently. Thanks for sharing!!!
I really liked Me Before You. But, I think there were two factors that made me like the book. First, it was obvious from the very beginning how the book was going to end, so I didn’t find it to be a tear-jerker that manipulated me in the end, which I usually don’t like. And, second I am very interested in the concept of assisted suicide and am receptive to the process, meaning I don’t personally have moral issues with the concept. If I did I think it would have bothered me. I do think I would have liked it better if the affection between the two didn’t verge into romance. That seemed forced.
Approx 4 years ago or so I read Lady Chatterley’s Lover by D H Lawrence, in which the crippled husband who was once young and able to do everything allows his wife to go with other person, was that out of love, I can’t be sure… here is the just opposite situation, this girl Louisa has a running man, a very fit person to do everything, yet she leaves him for a quadriplegic…I was somewhat confused… given the situation, I don’t find it a tear-jerker… Well, it’s written well…
I liked the first book. I thought it was a good read. A sad story but still a good one. The writing was OK and the characters are well developed in my opinion. But it should have ended with the first book. I don’t think it is overrated at all. Its a decent novel and had a good story and the majority of people liked it I guess. If you’re referring to “hype” or how it was marketed, I guess the hype appeared after the movie was released. I guess a lot of people loved the movie as well and eventually the book became much more popular than it already was.
It faced serious issues with people with disabilities, because the whole premise is based on a sense of powerlessness. Not to mention that the idea that life is only worth it if you’re able-bodied. But I haven’t read the book. I did see the film on a plane once (I wasn’t going to pay for it) and if it’s anything like the book, I can completely understand the problems people have with it. I wasn’t a fan at all. His family talks around him and discusses his life and possibilities without ever including him. It just ripped all agency from him.
I loved the book and it was one man’s choice on how he wanted to live his life. I saw no problems with it what so ever. I can’t even read comments on this book because how others express how he should have felt or what he should have done. I thought it was heartfelt and amazing. It broke my heart but it was worth it.
I thought it was terribly overrated. Only read the first one, would never read the others. Writing was simplistic as was the story. A nice story but didn’t keep me interested.
i found the theme too common to … as said above.. an easily translated tothe screen sort of movie. there was just no real pazazz to make it stand out to worth getting termed notable.
i liked the character “Louisa” so much, yes we can say that it’s not a unique and special story, it’s kind off predictable, i loved some conversations too …. (Still Me is different though… in a good way)
Yes . Overrated . Drags on and on and pushes an agenda . Very negative vibes .
I loved it!! Agenda or not, great story!! ❤️❤️❤️?
I liked it for what it was. I do think that Me After You was overkill and I won’t go anywhere near the 3rd one.
I agree about the second one, but you should give the third one a shot, I thought it was the best of the three and have seen several reviews on here saying the same thing. I almost gave up because the second one wasn’t good, but was glad I stuck to it for the third.
Hmm. I’ll consider this!
The 3rd book,Still Me, is my favorite book out of the 3. I really liked it.
Books are rated by those who read them so how can a book be overrated?
I read the first one and listened to the next two. I consider them light stories. Kind of like watching a sitcom. It’s not going to change your life, but it helps pass the time.
I read the first one then read the second. I regret the second one. ?
I read all 3 and the 1st and 3rd were the best of the 3.
I started the first one and didn’t even finish. @Diane, I like your analogy of a sitcom…. Or maybe a lifetime movie, but I decided I wanted more, even to just pass the time.

I loved it!
I must admit I liked it and I was glad I read it before watching the movie

It’s a good conversation starter.
I discussed this book at a Library Book Club, most of the attendees were retired. It gave some insight into the premise from a different perspective than mine. It wasn’t my favorite book, but the discussion it sparked was interesting.
I loved the book – and the characters – it’s not a literary masterpiece but it’s a beautiful story.
I found the writing to be fairly standard and the female protagonist a little one dimensional.
I did not care for it. Wasn’t my type of book
Loved it and all the rest that came after.
Oh my. I’ve had it sitting on my shelf for more than a year. I may knock it out next year.
I think it depends! I read it before I “heard” about it. I thought it was really good. If I heard of the “hype” I might not have liked it. I would suggest watching the movie. If you like the movie, you’ll LOVE the book.
The hype didn’t live up to the reality for me. It was so so.
I liked it…better than the movie.
I liked it, and the sequels. But as an able bodied person with friends with physical disabilities, I found myself wishing she had consulted with a person with a disability. Some things didn’t seem quite right.

I loved the whole trilogy! ?

What’s your opinion? And Why?
Approx 4 years ago or so I read Lady Chatterley’s Lover by D H Lawrence, in which the crippled husband who was once young and able to do everything allows his wife to go with other person, was that out of love, I can’t be sure… here is the just opposite situation, this girl Louisa has a running man, a very fit person to do everything, yet she leaves him for a quadriplegic…I was somewhat confused… given the situation, I don’t find it a tear-jerker… Well, it’s written well…

I liked the first and second book but didn’t read the third. I think they are good stand-alone novels. No need for a series.
I really liked Me Before You and I didn’t expect!
It was a sweet easy read that I enjoyed in between more complicated stories.
I love all three!!
One of my favorite ?
One of my favourites.I don’t think it is overrated.

@Susan I agree with you. I loved it.
@Susan me too !!
Too romantic for me.
I do!
I thought it was terribly overrated. Only read the first one, would never read the others. Writing was simplistic as was the story. A nice story but didn’t keep me interested.
Just read ..
Cute book, but I didn’t understand all the hype. Maybe because it was a story that would obviously easily translate to the screen?
i found the theme too common to … as said above.. an easily translated tothe screen sort of movie. there was just no real pazazz to make it stand out to worth getting termed notable.
Way too predictable
i liked the character “Louisa” so much, yes we can say that it’s not a unique and special story, it’s kind off predictable, i loved some conversations too …. (Still Me is different though… in a good way)
I dislike the premise of the book. which seems to be that if you are severly disabled, life is not worth living.
