I’ve lost my best friend in the last year of my high school. He committed suicide . Don’t know the reason ..but he used to get bullied a lot. I’m half way through the series and I’ve been feeling a bit weird and sick lately(since when I started watching the series).TBH I’m a little nervous about reading that book.
7/10 while it wasn’t worth the hype I feel it was an eye opener for what really goes on in a person’s mind. Granted I know its fiction and the author could only guess at the real reasons why people commit suicide, I still feel it was a powerful book. Both of my younger sisters have read it and it opened their eyes as well.
I have mixed feelings on this one. While I agree with what I feel the author was trying to achieve, spreading awareness about suicide and bullying and how they can go hand in hand, I think the execution was awful. For those is was meant to help, it goes about it on all the wrong ways. It glorifies suicide and can be a very large and long set of triggers for those in the middle of an internal struggle for their life.
Heh… “execution”…. You’re right though. I had a 17 year old girl tell me, because of that book, she thinks suicide is brave and noble. Let that sink in for a few…
If you’re interested in a little more education…There’s a kinda set of guidelines for presenting suicide as “entertainment” (i.e. movies, books, episode shows, etc… ) written by mental health professionals. (Quick keyword search should give you the link) Basically they give a way to write about suicide without making it sound rational and desirable. The way asher tells his story, it’s as if he read those guidelines and wrote the exact opposite. You will never hear me praise a work which tells our children that suicide is “brave and noble” and a perfectly acceptable form of dealing with your problems.
7/10 I quite liked the simplicity of the book. This got lost in the Netflix series, which was too sensationalised and a bit irresponsible. This is difficult subject matter and not for those who are vulnerable. In fact, Netflix upped the certificate from 15 to 18 halfway through, which was too late. Too many of my year 7 and 8’s had already watched this, because their parents were unaware of the subject matter.
I read the book 7 years ago.. So i dont remember much about it.. Except that it was okayish.. So 6 But the show is very fresh in my mind.. So 9 stars to the show..
I’d give it a 6/7 out of 10. The girl’s motives for killing herself weren’t clear. Was it revenge? Was she being noble? I would like to watch the series to get another perspective.
After watching the series I think it was just plain depression, but she didn’t want to do it and people ask “why?” So she made the tapes to explain that it wasn’t any one persons fault that she did it, but to show people that the way you act or treat others affects them. They may not all commit suicide but it does affect them. That’s what I got anyway
@Ashley I got that too. But, I read that the series put in additional things to pump up the story. I guess I’m interested in a story from her perspective. Outside the tapes of course. I don’t know. Maybe I’m comparing the story to my experience in high school.
8 for me, really enjoyed it but son of the subject matter is tough to read.

You may struggle with the book but for me, it was worth reading.
I too had 2 friends commit suicide in my senior year one at his home and the other at school during school.
Book was pretty terrible, imo.

Hah. Pun wasn’t intended, but I’ll take it. It really does bother me. It took what was a really good and meaningful idea and just gutted it.

The book 10 out of 10
1.5—I really hated it.

I’ve had it on my shelf for almost 2 years.
Haven’t decided of I was going to bother reading, or pass it along, as it was passed to me
10 I balled like a baby!!
I LOVED the show!!! Got the book and it just looked way to simple compared to the show…so i didn’t read it
3… I probably would’ve liked it more had I not watched the tv show, but it really disappointed me. It didn’t have the depth of the tv series.
Didn’t watch the series. I thought the book was very good (9 out of 10).
3/10, but I haven’t read it in a long time. I remember not caring much for it though.

I really enjoyed the book, but I didn’t care for the show.

(I read the book also, when I was in high school and again as an adult, and then watched the show)
