Depends on the size of the book. 25 for a 200-300 pager, 50 for 400-500 pager, and so on, but usually it never takes me that long. I can usually tell by the way a writer writes if I’ll like it or not. Some authors have a knack for storytelling and some don’t.
Not weird. I find a lot of books drag in the beginning and sometimes I don’t feel drawn to the book at all, if that makes sense…I still push through and finish it and a lot of times after I’m done with it, I find that I really do enjoy that book, that’s when I go back and reread.
I never not finish a book. Oddly, sometimes I don’t know I’m enjoying a book until after I’m finished. So I don’t stop. Sometimes it’s a really rough ride, but still a journey I complete.
I figure it’s the author’s job to grab my attention and keep it. That said, I try to keep at it until I’m positive I can’t take it anymore. 🙂 The amount of time or pages varies from book to book.
Anything between a few dozen pages to a few chapters, depending on the quality of the writting. But I never force myself to finish a book that I do not deem worthwhile. Some books I had to put down I will return to months or even years later. Others are forgotten.
If I am not into by half way through I will not finish. I have tried to push myself to finish a book and am usually disappointed in the end. Now I just stop reading.
I hardly ever give up on books I’ve chosen for myself but here is one I’m taking a break from for a while. I got to page 174/561..I never give up before 100 pages even if it’s a book someone else has recommended. I’ll get back to this one later though, I promise? It’s Alexander Chee’s “The queen of the night”
If it does t grab me in first chapter I quit Sometimes never go back and sometimes it may be 3 months later go back and dive right in Depends on my mood at the time?
I’ve never started a book that I didn’t finish, no matter how bad it was. That is until I started reading Anne Rice’s “Lasher”. I’ve made it to three chapters and its horribly written, it is a bloated mess. I’m done with it.
It depends on why I don’t like it. If the author’s writing drives me crazy I’ll give up pretty early on. Otherwise I try to power through to 50 or 100 pages before quitting.
I used to make myself finish the books but now.. why waste time reading something I don’t like when I could be reading something I enjoy?
If I’m not hooked by page 50 I’m usually out. I just tried Castaways it was high rated on Kindle Unlimited but too many damn cliche’s. & like modern terms I just didn’t wanna read them doing.
“Netflix and chill” “white girl starbucks coffee” like cmon really? No thanks
Depends how interested I was beforehand. I got through all of Gunslinger because I wanted to get into Dark Tower but when the second book started poorly I just gave up. Probably 50 pages, maybe less in most cases
I wouldn’t mind the pacing if what happened in that was good. Good world or character building, not stiff and awkward interactions, I was definitely disappointed throughout. I think there was a later segment I liked, but even that wasn’t very long
Usually just a chapter or two. Recently I gave up at about 125 pages on two different books. As others have said, why waste precious time and attention on something that isn’t enjoyable?
As a former school librarian I’d encourage our school pupil readers to try 3 chapters. If it hadn’t engaged their attention by then, they were encouraged to give up and move on to another book.
I try to give it 70-100 pages. Sometimes only about 30, though.
100 pages
I hardly ever give up. I either start another and read at same time orrrr just put back on shelf for another try.
Not long.
Untillni just cant stand it.
I couldnt get into a wrinkle in time
Or the outlander series.
Or the girl with the red balloon
I try to give a book at least a few chapter before I give up–I don’t always make that though. Life is too short to read books I don’t love!
Almost 3 weeks and I’m still trying to finish a book because I can’t get into it
10 or 20 pages.
I aim for a 100 pages but if it’s really bad I just stop. Past the 100 page point I feel like I’ve wasted time so may as well finish it.
Yes!!
I almost never give up on a book.
Same, its very rare.
100 pages..if i dont like it by them Ill put it down..but its rare that i do…most of the time I finish it anyway.
Life it too short for books I dislike.
I keep going and hope! Usually I am pleasantly surprised!

Sounds weird but I rarely like the beginning of a book. The one I am reading now is finally picking up speed. I am on page 98.

At least halfway but since I review I usually finish the whole book so I can give it a fair review.
One page lol ?
My standards are extremely low if not nonexistent, so I don’t waste time
Usually several chapters, and I also look at the ending to see if it’s worth my time.
I normally never quit
Whenever I say to myself, I don’t want to read more of this book.
I never quit either only because I paid money for the book.

I don’t. I have been surprised, so never dnf a book

@Michael 50 pages.

I read, off and on, about 4 hours a day. I toss a book if it hasn’t grabbed me by the 25th page.
I don’t quit I keep reading the book hoping it will get better.
50 or so pages
I usually read the whole thing….I guess I feel guilty if I don’t finish a book…lol…I know it’s silly
I usually try until chap 2…and if it does not grab me…then I give up….I feel bad that I can’t get into it….but I manage to get over it…and move on….
I finish it
The moment I feel I can’t get into a book, I stop reading it and read something else. I will give it a try at another time.
3 chapters. I use the 3×3 rule in everything
100 pages generally books range from 350-400 pages and if I can’t find something to like after 1/3 of the book is read I give up.
I started the Ava Delaney series by Claire Farrell. I like the series now. But I am on book 6 now. I didnt quite get into the first book.
See rule number four.
A few chapters.
you’re my perfect reader, I have a few upcoming books that literally are just one long chapter.
I don’t know. Not always I give up.
50 pages, max.
Depends, but usually 50-100 pages
The last one I couldn’t finish was the night circus and I gave it until 50%.
First 2 to 3 chapters. If I can’t get into it after that I quit.
50 pages
I’ve never started a book that I didn’t finish, no matter how bad it was. That is until I started reading Anne Rice’s “Lasher”. I’ve made it to three chapters and its horribly written, it is a bloated mess. I’m done with it.

All the way through I live in hope
50-100 pages. If it has really good reviews I might keep trying but there are so many good books to be miserable struggle through one you don’t like.
A chapter. Two chapters of the first is at least somewhat good.
I very rarely give up on books beause I choose them carefully.
Two chapters
I read till it either annoys me beyond repair or bores me to the point of annoyance lol
I used to make myself finish the books but now.. why waste time reading something I don’t like when I could be reading something I enjoy?

35
2 or 3 chapters depending on how hopeful I am that it will get better.
5 to 10 pages maybe just a little more But not much.
First couple chapters
I normally keep reading to the end
About 3 chapters or so
20% into it. If it doesn’t grab me, it’s gone.
50-100 pages / 2-3 chapters
One Chapter…. Two at the most.
Used to do 50 pages or so. Now it’s a chapter or two.
like 100 pages
About 2 chapters then its gone
60 pages and not 61
3 chapters
nothing past the first 2 if i cant get into it.
first 3 chapters
10 pages. Very impatient!
When i realise i m not interested anymore (to know what happens next)
Depends on the author. I give Dickens halfway, because that’s how long it usually takes to introduce everyone and get the ball rolling.
A couple of chapters in…
up to 50 pages
50 and out. It doesn’t happen often, however. Choose wisely. Life’s too short to spend the time on something that’s not enjoyable.
Depends how interested I was beforehand. I got through all of Gunslinger because I wanted to get into Dark Tower but when the second book started poorly I just gave up. Probably 50 pages, maybe less in most cases
im like 100 in and its so slow
I wouldn’t mind the pacing if what happened in that was good. Good world or character building, not stiff and awkward interactions, I was definitely disappointed throughout. I think there was a later segment I liked, but even that wasn’t very long
its ask jane
Oh. I thought you meant the one I said specifically. My bad. Well I hope it either gets better or the next one you try is better
I finish even if I hate it. I don’t know what’s wrong with me, I’ve always been this way. Luckily, that doesn’t happen too often. ?
Usually just a chapter or two. Recently I gave up at about 125 pages on two different books. As others have said, why waste precious time and attention on something that isn’t enjoyable?
depends on the book sometimes l i give up other time l will read the book to the end.
100 pages
I won’t give up. I mark it, put it aside and usually I have the desire to finish it sooner or later. Luckily my TBR pile is UUUUGE. 😉
I got over half of the book with The Girl On The Train before I quit. I couldn’t stand the main character.
A page.
I’ve never met someone else who says a page!
@Pamela I used to read slush at publishers. If you can’t hook me in a page, I’ll move on. ?
50-100 pages. I try to give it a chance.
A couple of chapters
I give it 60-100 pages
Depends on size of book
A chapter
As a former school librarian I’d encourage our school pupil readers to try 3 chapters. If it hadn’t engaged their attention by then, they were encouraged to give up and move on to another book.
3rd chapter if I an not into it by then I never will be
3 or 4 chapters
100 pages
