Everything Everything by Elizabeth Yoon, Numbers, Sophie Mackenzie books, Sarah Crossan books, Juno Dawson books, The Hate You Give, Murder Most Unladylike series, Anne Cassidy books….
I love The Ranger’s apprentice series (21 books counting the spinoffs but everyone is worth reading for the adventures and life lessons), I was also really into Shakespeare at that age, if she hasn’t read Harry Potter yet then definitely that, I loved the Earthsea Chronicles at 13&14, also the Maximum Ride books by james Patterson.
So many great reccomendations above – land of stories is fun; and if she likes more romantic stuff – check out The Selection Series; I agree with Cassandra Clare and maybe Kasie West too. For more suspenseful – the Hunger Games, The new World Series (Rising is the first one) and there are some great teen true crime novels by April Henry (Girl Stolen; Body in he Woods). ?
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Sherman Alexie. Take it from a former English teacher, he’ll relate to this. Aren’t many contemporary books out there for young males. Trust me!
What do they like? Fantasy, sci-fi, non-fiction, dystopian? Librarian here – don’t see age, we see what they like and their reading level. I have 10 year olds that come in my library reading Stephen King.
Scott Westerfield wrote a wonderful steampunk trilogy. The first volume is Leviathan is excellent. It’s exciting and got a message. The two other books are great, too. Coming-of-age.
I would also make sure to decided based on the 13 year old’s personality and dreams! Stick close to those in choosing to make it the most pleasurable experience possible.
Classics are always great! Treasure island. Swiss family Robinson. Charlotte’s Web. Charlie and the chocolate factory. Matilda. R.L. Stine Fear Street or goosebumps. Etc…
My 13 year old is definitely waaaaay pst Charlottes Webb and Diary of a Wimpy kid. These seem more like recs for my 8 year old… does anyone have some more “mature” recs for teens? She is reading A Quiet Kind of Thunder right now and LOVES it. The Hate You Give is great too!!!
@Angela , very true!!! Many of the recs just seem below a 13 yr olds interests… but maybe I’m crazy! I have a 9, 11, 13, and 14 yr old so maybe the younger ones are more mature bc if the older ones.
The Wormling five-book series by Jerry B. Jenkins was outstanding in its excellent balance of an exciting, engaging story line and its readability (e.g., chapters are not too long). The Wingfeather Saga four-book series by Andrew Peterson is also quite well written, exciting, and engaging, but the chapters (and total page count) are longer.
Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins. It was a series recomended to me by an 11 year old. I’m 39 and could not put it down. It’s the same author as The Hunger Games.
