I read it in high school, and again many years later, and loved it both times. By the way, if you ever get a chance to catch it, there is a terrific opera version by Benjamin Britten.
I liked it. It was quite a while ago. It’s a style of writing that you have to be willing to read: very dense, detailed and full of nuance. I’ve read all of his books.
@Gail I realized this Henry James wrote Turn of the Screw. Something Poe wrote is the first mystery, I think. I’m remembering stuff from high school over Half a century ago and not doing a ver good job of it. In fact, now I think O’Henry wrote the first mystery. Oh dear.
I’m with ya, Rosalie. This happens to me all the time. I think it’s Murders in the Rue Morgue, and it was by Poe. Listen, a lifetime of reading entitles us to conflate things once in a while…?
Sheesh, I am. This will be my first Henry James that I’ll be reading. Slowly but surely I’m gaining knowledge of amazing authors. Thanks to all you book lovers.
I did ages ago but l honestly don’t remember it ?

It’s a yay.
I didn’t care for it.

A true classic.

it’s a yay for me
I read it this year. Worth reading, but not fabulous. Very vague and it just sorta ends. I needed SparkNotes afterwards to understand it.
I’ve read it several times, including grad school, and learned something new each time.
I love books that do that. ?
Yay
Yay!
Loved it right up until it became one of the most frustrating books I’ve ever read.
Nooo.. Why?
Let’s just say I like closure!
More than 55 years ago. It was touted as the first American mystery story, I think. Not my favorite EA Poe work.
I think you’ve confused this with another book.

@Gail Thanks. I guess I’ll have to read Turn of the screw again
Yea!

For a minute I thought it was The Taming of the Shrew. But NAY
I really like Henry James, but he is not everyone’s cup of tea.
I thought it was quite good. So a “ yay!” from me.
