There is a initial placement test. There are several facets of it – visual eye tracking, vocabulary, and comprehension. Then students are able to select different passages with comprehension questions at the end. As a teacher you can monitor their progress. Questions can be tracked for IEP goals. Students have to earn a certain percentage on a set number of passages before they are moved onto the next level.
I think Newsela is more engaging for students with more contemporary topics. I had to use it for my special education students and Title 1 students as a second intervention. Most students were not motivated- although a few did use it at home.
My students were not motivated at all. I had to sit right next to them so they wouldn’t click through. They didn’t like the stories at all. It was self-sabotage.
We have had great success using Reading Plus as well as independent reading for our students who were struggling with vocabulary development and reading comprehension.
We have been using this programme for 3 years. I have students who absolutely love it and some who hate it. I love that students can select from a variety of texts to read. So do they. It also exposes them to a range of texts they would not always choose to read and there is a good range of topics, both fiction and non fiction. If you only use RP for your programme, it will not be successful. It needs to be part of a balanced programme that also includes group and shared reading. The writing aspect of RP is also good and my students are able to write about what they have read, responding to a variety of prompts. We have had some students make fantastic gains using RP in conjunction with other support. There is a great support site with supporting resources. Also they talk frequently about ways to motivate your students to want to improve.
To me the word program indicates RUN but I have not used it
I do. I hate it because my students hate it. They are miserable. Reading aloud to them in a small group would be more beneficial.
Have you used the supporting resources such as Skills Coach and the motivational tools?
Ugh. I disliked it. What do you want to know?
I was curious about how it works, the format, how are the skills students work on determined, and what students think of it.

Thank you for the information!

Did you use any of the motivational support tools available?

What is the cost??
I am in New Zealand so I am not sure what you would pay. We pay $23 NZD per student
