I’m a novice reader, recently started. I have read a few Tokien and also love the films. On the other hand, heard fantastic things about the farseer triology.
I have been reading fantasy a long time and just finished farseer, it’s not as deep of a world as lotr, but enjoyable. There are a few other trilogies you may want to try too. Mistborn, stormlight archive, kingkiller chronicles….I feel like they’re staples of the fantasy world. Enjoy all the reading you have ahead of you!! ??
I would say Farseer but I’m totally biased on this one ^^ Plus I just finished its re-read and I’m now starting the second trilogy of Fitz and the Fool’s adventures. Forgot how much I loved their story ^^
@Audrea, I really enjoyed the Liveships series, had the books for yanks… Once I finally got to them, I kicked myself as to why did I wait this long to read them. I must say I missed out on fair few details when I read the tawny man trilogy the first time … now I’m enjoying it much better ^^
@Brandon my problem is I don’t care for the magic aspects of the genre. I have to overlook it and concentrate on the adventure or journey part of the books, which is why I’m even interested in the first place. If they removed all magic, witches or wizardry from all books I’d be perfectly happy! Or at t least keep it good verses evil with those things being on the side of evil lol
the magic in those books is very minimal and not outlandish like how it is in a lot of other books. i’m not a huge fan of over the top magic either and that’s kinda what drew me into the books.
They must be read in chronological order as God intended. First read 1. The fellowship of the Ring 2. The Assassins Apprentice 3. Royal Assassin 4. The Hobbit 5. Two Towers 6. Assassin’s Quest 7. Doors of Stone And finally 8. Return of the King
Just kidding read whichever one you want to first. They’re both great.
I love the books of Robin Hobb, but I think you should be prepared to read the whole Elderling Realm of it turns out you like this series. Together they are awesome. But that is 5 series (3 about Fitz and the Fool), so a lot of books. No problem to take breaks in between of course. But most people that only read the Fitz and the Fool and later went back to the other 2 series, regret it afterwards. That is, if you like it of course. So with Tolkien the ride is not so long. I found Tolkien a bit slow, while Robin Hobb generally is a bit faster. But both are great books and you probably won’t regret it either way.
They are so different, but Farseer first I think.

There on my list. Thanks @Audrea

@Magpie good to know, I like the liveship series so far i’m just anxious for some more bastard in my life. Ha ha
both are absolutely amazing.
Farseer !!!! Robin Hobb is one of the best authors I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading.
Never heard of Farseer. Never even seen it talked about in any groups or posts or any book reviews where they give comparisons.
that’s surprising because it’s a widely loved fantasy series.
@Brandon maybe I’ve just overlooked it along the way… Yeah its a bit odd tho for sure!
it’s a fantastic series, i think anyone who loved lord of the rings would really enjoy them too!

@Brandon that’s what I like to hear!!! I’ll go check them out…
there is still magic in them but it’s more….. natural??? if that makes any sense lol if you do check them out though i hope you enjoy them!
Never heard of Farseer either. But LOTR is a classic and Tolkien is such an inspiration for many fantasy authors so I would say start with his stuff.
LOTR
They must be read in chronological order as God intended.
First read
1. The fellowship of the Ring
2. The Assassins Apprentice
3. Royal Assassin
4. The Hobbit
5. Two Towers
6. Assassin’s Quest
7. Doors of Stone
And finally
8. Return of the King
Just kidding read whichever one you want to first. They’re both great.
Doors of Stone, lol. Well done. 🙂
I was reading this thinking to myself: is this guy crazy lol?
I was reading this thinking to myself: is this guy crazy lol?
Yes he is an absolute loon!
LoL
I thought he was crazy for not including Arcanum Unbounded.
Tolkien is in my top 3, but Farseer is a fun ride… Though it’s really 9 books, not 3
Farseer

This is the correct answer.
I’ll go with Tolkien first. Thanks everyone
