Well I personally feel there are intelligent and unintelligent writers. It got nothing to do with their intellect though. Its how cleverly they execute their strategy of writing a good book. If you just look around you will find today writers are not like those old dreamers. Today its A well perceived and strategied endeavour to write a book. An intelligent writer will decide his location and the age group of readers and A proper mixure of a plot to hold the interest of the target readers etc etc. Unintelligent one will do a bad job of it.
Thnx Mazumder.. Please could you elaborate on the etc areas. You have brought out some interesting points. By location.. Did u mean the story location?
@Roy yes the location of the plot at least from where the story starts. The choice of location is important to create the interest in the mind of reader.
Thats what I wanted to say if you.want your book to be successfull commercially then you have to prepare A strategy for it. If the story you want to write about A girl in A remote tamilnadu village then your readee will be limited and not many will identify with the location and the girl.
Ok, I think it makes sense unless we are readers who will try and find value in remote corners.. But they are a minority. Which means we cannot just take some topic emotionally and pour out from the heart. We have to write for someone or some set of readers who can identify themselves in it
Roy Cherian Cherukarayil PLEASE dont ignore those issues. They are the subjects which makes you A human being. Just choose A different media for them. Novel is different.
Ok Mazumder.. From the heart pieces.. U mean we may blog them or write in magazines or even as short story books (not sure though if we can pour out emotionally in short story books) but a novel needs these vital commercial ingredients. Sometimes I wonder if anyone would have read My Experiments with Truth but for the fame Gandhi had.. It’s a difficult read.
Actually I poured out from my heart into a short story book recently 🙂 not sure it was a wrong strategy.. Hope the sales does not give me heart diseases. 🙂
@Roy I am not A specialist but as A reader.I will prefer A variety of subjects plots and locations. The more the better. Short story size should not be very large and there should be some strong surprise element.
@Arlene Lol. I didn’t say I didn’t like him, just that he writes in cliche and thinks he’s being inventive, his “twists” are so obvious to anyone who’s ever read a Roald Dahl tale and if his characters were any more wooden, he’d call them all Pinnochio! I’ve actually read quite a few of his books, with the same fascination as I watch a “so-bad-it’s -good” movie. Got caught once by a horrified friend: “OMG! You’re reading HIM??!! I replied; “Well, it’s like reading, only easier!”?
Some are most definitely bad! Others are ok, and yet others are just downright amazing! And amongst all of them, there are just different writers, beause what I like, you may not like and vice verca 🙂
A good writer has to be a story teller. Have great characters. Bring you to a place you have never been before. A great writer does not write for you, he or she writes for themselves and you are welcome to join. Larry Noel Thomas Author Lostwarriorbookseries.blog
I have started and quit books that contain multiple adjectives on page one. Those are the “bad” authors, although I’m sure many people still enjoy their stories.
I believe we have both. The world is a huge melting pot of different thoughts dreams interests appetites. It takes a different writer because there’s many readers out there that loves different. That’s what makes writing and reading so good.
An author being a bad writer us totally a relative statement. Take for instance reviews that say how much a book sucks so much but others love it and it had everything they love in a book.
Maybe ‘skilled or unskilled’ writers is a better terminology. A writer may be unskilled because he/she does not do good research or allows too many digressions to creep in, etc.
Good writers mastered the language, the narrative techniques and the topics they write about. They are skilled in the art of communicating ideas, knowledge, and emotions, the magic of attracting and motivate their readers to read about subjects and stories that they would never read or were interested about and make them turn pages unto the end. Bad writers are the contrary.
There have always been bad writers. But with the invention of Amazon & online publishing they are coming out of the walls ! Now you can publish with out an editor. They were the ones that proofed the mistakes. We have also added new genres. Look at the categories you can choose from. No longer just fiction but 10 types of fiction.

Ok… But this way we may not really end up writing what we want to fully.. It’s ti bring in the commercial touch.
There were some more points you listed in etc. Please could u blow them up for me.

@Roy You cant expect similar sensibties among your readers as you.
Point taken…
Actually I poured out from my heart into a short story book recently 🙂 not sure it was a wrong strategy.. Hope the sales does not give me heart diseases. 🙂
Do u recommend the same parameters for short story books?
@Roy I am not A specialist but as A reader.I will prefer A variety of subjects plots and locations. The more the better. Short story size should not be very large and there should be some strong surprise element.
Read Jeffrey Archer and tell me there’s no such thing as bad writing!?
Maybe I shouldn’t admit to this, but I like him. What are your reasons why you don’t.
@Arlene Lol. I didn’t say I didn’t like him, just that he writes in cliche and thinks he’s being inventive, his “twists” are so obvious to anyone who’s ever read a Roald Dahl tale and if his characters were any more wooden, he’d call them all Pinnochio!

OOOKAY makes sense since I like potato chips and have been known to eat McDonald’s??
No, there are definitely good and bad writers.
There are bad ones, competent ones, good ones, and great ones.
Plus people that should never have published they are so bad
@Tiffany EL James comes to mind.
Is that 50 Shades? Never read them, not my genre
@Tiffany not mine either. I am a huge horror and sci fi geek.
I think both and some writers that have gone bad.
Some are most definitely bad! Others are ok, and yet others are just downright amazing! And amongst all of them, there are just different writers, beause what I like, you may not like and vice verca 🙂

It’s all about the subject matter. If it doesn’t interest me, the unfinished book is destined for the donation pile.
I believe we have both. The world is a huge melting pot of different thoughts dreams interests appetites. It takes a different writer because there’s many readers out there that loves different. That’s what makes writing and reading so good.
I believe different writers and different readers for those writers. ♥️
I don’t believe any author is a bad writer really.
That I totally disagree with
An author being a bad writer us totally a relative statement. Take for instance reviews that say how much a book sucks so much but others love it and it had everything they love in a book.
A bad writer has little knowledge of grammar, spelling, character development, and plot line inconsistencies.
Mostly, when people say “I don’t like so-and-so as a writer” what THAT usually amounts to is a differing of opinion.
But there are bad writers. Some people might have a “great idea” but really should not be writing…
Mostly, though, it’s opinion.
Different writers
Calling everybody who publishes today a writer is like calling everybody who sings karaoke in public a singer.
Maybe ‘skilled or unskilled’ writers is a better terminology. A writer may be unskilled because he/she does not do good research or allows too many digressions to creep in, etc.
I agree with this. Also, someone may have a great story to tell but just lack mechanical writing skill.
There are bad writers.
Good and bad is subjective, IMO. Some love certain books/writers that others dislike. It’s all a matter of opinion.
Both
I think we have different writers. Not everyone likes the same type of books. A book I hate might be your favorite.

You could have a great story, but if your writing is horrendous, I cannot stick with it.
The “author” (?) of 50 shades is a diabolical writer so there are def good & bad although I suppose it comes down to preference of the reader really
I am a bad writer. Lol!
Different
There are no bad writers….
