Brian Lumley does a Vampire Series which follows on from the Necroscope series. I enjoyed them and loved watching the mix of worlds, a little bit of ESP, intuitive psychics etc… good character progression. Always wanted to reread them- but they’ve been in storage…
Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicle’s caused me never to want to go to New Orleans at night for a very long time. And I was an adult at the time. They are wonderful.
Elizabeth Hunter’s Elemental Series; Deborah Harkness “A Discovery of Witches” trilogy, and Molly Harper’s Vampire series – but only if you want very funny vampires. The last I especially recommend listening to as audiobooks. They are a perfect marriage of book and narrator
Dracula, by Stoker. The Vampire, by Polidori. Anno Dracula, and its sequels, by Kim Newman. The Lestat novels by Anne Rice. I Am Legend by Mathieson. Fevre Dream by George RR Martin. Sherlock Holmes vs Dracula by Estleman. Marvel’s Tomb Of Dracula series.
Anything by Anne Rice. Also, Jemiah Jefferson wrote some pretty streamy vampire romance novels. 🙂 I’m also looking for suggestions of non-corny, well written vampire erotica if anyone has author suggestions.
Salem’s Lot, Fevre Dream by George R.R. Martin, and I love the JR Ward Black Dagger Brotherhood books, but they are very….campy, and are paranormal romance. Not sure if you like that genre. The early Laurell K. Hamilton is good too.
Bianca Scardoni wrote an awesome series that I have not been able to stop thinking about!!! Check it out. If you like the vampire diaries show you’ll love this series. I’m addicted!
The vampire chronicles by Anne Rice. If racy doesn’t offend you try Sherrilyn Kenyon. The historian is amazing as well! And there is always the original Bram stoker version of Dracula.
The actual original (modern) vampire – Chelsea Quinn Yarbro’s St. Germain series. She was named Grand Master at the World Horror Convention & is still writing at 76 !! Start with Hotel Transylvania & there are (so far) 30 others…
Ah, I forgot about Tanya Huff–those were good too, @Katelyn. (I have read Sunshine too, but I actually didn’t like it as much, but maybe that’s because this was a different take for McKinley from her other books. She writes really good fairy tales.)
Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. award, Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris, Forever series by Laura Adrian, Vampire Academy books, House of Night series, Immortals After Dark series.
Where do I start, @Katelyn?? _Carmilla_ by Sheridan Le Fanu is an excellent gothic novella that came out before Bram Stoker’s _Dracula_. _Those of My Blood_ and _Dreamspy_ by Jacqueline Lichtenberg are more of a sci-fi take on vampires. Also excellent (and more sci-fi leaning: _The Madness Season_ by CS Friedman. (I loved this book and have read it over several times.) The first 6 books of Laurell K Hamilton’s Anita Blake series is good urban fantasy involving vampires. Someone mentioned Sookie Stackhouse too–the books are better than the series IMO. _Bloodthirsty_ by Flynn Meaney was good/funny (it’s YA). Poppy Z Brite also wrote several edgy modern day novels involving vampires (ie, they are not necessarily romanticized). Chelsea Quinn Yarbro also wrote a series of novels that are good–but I have found them hard to find (at libraries). I read a few out of order, but still enjoyed them. Guillermo del Toro also wrote a series (also now a TV series)–they were pretty graphic though and I still have the second one on my TBR list. Annnndddd… lastly I loved _Bunnicula_ by James Howe. Share that with your 8-12 year child in your life. It’s funny and punny and about a vampire rabbit. (And yes, I read the Twilight novels too and I admit I did like them. I have a thing about vampires…)
Dracula, of course. The Book of Renfield: a Gospel of Dracula (2005), by Tim Lucas. Lord of the Dead: the Secret History of Lord Byron, by Tom Holland. I like my vampires historical and literate.
The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice are AMAZING.
There are so many, depends on the genre you like – twilight, the night series, immortals after dark series

I recently read Halfway to the Grave.
It was good too.
“Dracula” by Bram Stoker.
Lara Adrian’s series, I forgot what it’s called but it has soooo many books. I read a few of them and each were pretty good.
Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicle’s caused me never to want to go to New Orleans at night for a very long time. And I was an adult at the time. They are wonderful.
The Radleys by Matt Haig – something different and a little lighter, about a vampire family
Don’t read Twilight, you’ll want to eat Tide Pods.
Darren Shan. Kids books but still fun to read.
‘Salem’s Lot by Stephen King is, to me, THE definitive vampire novel. I prefer it to Dracula. And I’m a big Dracula fan.
Oh yes!!!!
I do! It’s from Christopher Pike “the last vampire”
Sunshine by Robin McKinley.
For a fun take on vampires, read Bloodsucking Fiends, You Suck, and Bite Me: A Love Story, all by Christopher Moore.
read all the things by Christopher Moore…that’s not a title, just read everything by him, lol
YESSSSS!!!
The Passage by Justin Cronin. First in a trilogy.

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova and the Anne Rice books, Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestate and The Queen of the Damned.
Also ‘SALEMS LOT by Stephen King is really good!
A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. The vampires are terrific. Read the whole trilogy.

Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost
Anything by Anne Rice. Also, Jemiah Jefferson wrote some pretty streamy vampire romance novels. 🙂 I’m also looking for suggestions of non-corny, well written vampire erotica if anyone has author suggestions.
Must Love Vampires by Heidi Betts, The Vampire and the Virgin by Kerrelyn Sparks, Daughter of Darkness by Mandy M Roth
Can’t beat the original vampire queen Ann Rice
Sookie Stackhouse series
Salem’s Lot, Fevre Dream by George R.R. Martin, and I love the JR Ward Black Dagger Brotherhood books, but they are very….campy, and are paranormal romance. Not sure if you like that genre. The early Laurell K. Hamilton is good too.
Bianca Scardoni wrote an awesome series that I have not been able to stop thinking about!!! Check it out. If you like the vampire diaries show you’ll love this series. I’m addicted!
The historian
Vampires in the Lemon Grove – Karen Russell
Laurel K. Hamilton’s- Anita Blake series
Interview With the Vampire (Anne Rice) — classic!
The Passage by Justin Cronin
Barbara Hambly, Those who Hunt the Night, and Traveling With the Dead. Good stuff!
The vampire chronicles by Anne Rice. If racy doesn’t offend you try Sherrilyn Kenyon. The historian is amazing as well! And there is always the original Bram stoker version of Dracula.
I might narrow the Rice recommendation down to the original three volumes (Interview/Lestat/Queen). From there, they start getting a little…weird.
I agree! The Witches books, “ The Mayfair Witches” was very good
That’s why I specified the vampire chronicles. That series follows the vamps. Her other books are good but not vampire genre.
There are a total of twelve books in The Vampire Chronicles; everything from Tale of the Body Thief onward (IMO) is of lesser quality.
I disagree. I found that Memnoch The Devil was most excellent. I also like Backwoods Farm and Armand.
I disagree as well. I love them all. Hubby’s favorite is memnoch, we even have a signed copy.
Kresley Cole has some
NightLord series.
Best vampire book ever. You wont be disappointed.
Don’t read anything by Laurell K. Hamilton.
Agree. I really enjoyed the first few books of her Anita Blake series and then they descended into Fifty Shades wanna bes
Following*
No, cuz they all suck.
Hahahahaha
I thoroughly enjoyed The Circle Trilogy from Nora Roberts
Twilight!
Nah just kidding..
I still like Anne Rice the best
When talking about a complete body of work, Anne Rice is the best. Her Cosmology is stellar and her use of adjectives, magnificent.
The actual original (modern) vampire – Chelsea Quinn Yarbro’s St. Germain series. She was named Grand Master at the World Horror Convention & is still writing at 76 !! Start with Hotel Transylvania & there are (so far) 30 others…
Abe Lincoln vampire slayer
Sunshine by Robin McKinley and Blood Price by Tanya Huff.:)
Ah, I forgot about Tanya Huff–those were good too, @Katelyn. (I have read Sunshine too, but I actually didn’t like it as much, but maybe that’s because this was a different take for McKinley from her other books. She writes really good fairy tales.)
The Radleys by Matt Haig – totally different take on the genre
I know it might sound obvious but Bram Stokers Dracula? I enjoyed Interview with the Vampire too.
Fledgling by Octavia Butler.

Twilight Series is the best one to read if you like a plot with Vampires and Werewolves

Dracula, of course. The Book of Renfield: a Gospel of Dracula (2005), by Tim Lucas. Lord of the Dead: the Secret History of Lord Byron, by Tom Holland. I like my vampires historical and literate.

Mortal Instruments series Cassandra Clare – young adult, but light entertainment.
