Two books written by the existing Lady Carnarvon who owns/lives in Highclere where Downton was filmed. “Lady Almina” and “Lady Catherine” they are generally historically accurate and interesting.
I just finished Wait for Me! by Deborah, the Duchess of Devonshire. It’s a memoir – it’s somewhat disconnected in that it’s more anecdotes than a coherent whole, but as someone who loves the history of the Mitfords and that general era in Britain, I loved it.
“What Happens At Christmas” (Millworth Manor, #1) by Victoria Alexander. Victoria Alexander delights and treats the reader in every way! There are wonderful characters (in fact I could picture some of the actors/actresses that portray the characters in Downton Abbey in the scenes of this novel) and the characters are described fully so that each personality can be enjoyed to the fullest.
There is also a series by Elswyth Thane called her Williamsburg series that by book 3 moves between the US and England. Goes from colonial times through WWII.
That was a very tough book for me–I read it because I liked her “Other Boleyn Girl” and it almost stopped me from reading the rest of her books. Still, it was well done
