In a list of Jane Austen’s novels, for those who’ve read them, where would you place Northanger Abbey? It’s the only one I haven’t read yet.

One of the most (underrated) insightful novel of hers. If you enjoy her work, you must read it. ?
I hated the BBC adaptation so I’m a little worried about the book.
I haven’t seen it yet. But I’m sure you’ll enjoy reading it. ?
@Tracey yes, it was so bad. The wigs and the music…euch!
Yes I read that in school and loved it – it touches on the essence of what makes Austen distinct.
sense and sensibility
pride and prejudice
persuasion
northanger abbey

netherfield park
Northanger Abbey is tied for my second favorite with S&S, with Persuasion being number one
It’s grown on me over the years. It’s one of her funniest.
I like both Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey less than the others. But it’s her funniest book.
I think Northanger Abbey was her attempt at the gothic style.
she was making fun of it
Hannah Stewart, u r correct!
Northanger Abbey was the first written and last published. It has a different feel to it but I enjoyed it.
It’s very different to the others, but it’s my favourite.
Thanks everyone for your opinions. I didn’t realise people found it funny in any way. That relieves my mind.
very funny. JA wrote it to make fun of gothic romances. The heroine of NA has read too many and so her imagination gets her into trouble
Loved it. Slightly different. Little more gothic.
That’s what makes me hesitant, I’m not a fan of gothic.
@Tracey I would give it a try. It’s more gothic light. ?
Stephanie Miceli I probably will because I’ve read all her other novels.
first fav – Persuasion. second fav – Northhanger Abbey. I wish someone would make a decent film of NA. i think both versions are terrible… for different reasons
Fun, but more serious towards the end. I think she started out to do an out-and-out parody but discovered she couldn’t keep it up while also giving her characters depth and realism. Henry Tilney is one of my favorites of her heroes. His father showed that you don’t have to murder your wife or lock her away to be a monster.
