Brilliant
Reading it now, about two thirds in.really interesting slant on a ww2 story, a side u often don’t read about. Really enjoying it…
Yes def recommend
Yep recommend. Interesting characters.
Yes!
I just finished it about 2 minutes ago and it’s a brilliant book. Highly recommend
Absolutely loved it. One of my favourite books!!
Def recommend, loved it!
Excellent book, agree with the comment about the language but otherwise couldn’t put it down
I didn’t realise that Ben Elton was such a good author before I read this book. Excellent
Very good book
Reading it at the moment really enjoying it
Disliked it intensely I’m afraid -largely due to the modern day vernacular. Each character seemed to be talking a la Ben Elton…..Gave up half way through.
Very good book and I didn’t think it was typical of the way Ben Elton would write actually. Read it very quickly.
A great book. Really recommend.
Quite a bit of modern dialogue, but I did enjoy it, rather than immerse myself in it
Excellent book. Best holocaust book I’ve read
One of the best books I have ever read
Excellent book!
Totally recommend it, excellent book!
Really enjoyed it. Give The First Casualty also by Ben Elton a try.
Yes and yes!!
Brilliant read. You’ll love it
I really enjoyed this book, a real page turner although there will be those who say it’s not very well written. Who cares? The story is great. A good read.
I couldn’t get past the absolutely dire, cliched writing (and I’ve loved Ben Elton in the past). My mum said the story itself is great, but if you aren’t someone who can read for the story alone and manage to look past the incredibly clunky, grating writing then it might not appeal. I’m not a historical fiction snob by any stretch, but when a 1930s German character talks like a 21st century wide-boy (babe, tits, ass etc) it loses all credibility and jars you out of the time period. I have managed to read novels that aren’t brilliantly written for the plot alone (Dan Brown isn’t the best writer but is believable enough and tells a rollicking tale!) but Elton’s writing in this one is little better than a teenager’s.
Loved it!
Yes it’s good
loved it!!!!
Loved it!
Wonderful
wonderful book
Very very good. Not from a literary point of view as stated above but it didn’t matter. As an account of what really happened with the rise of the Nazi party from the 1920’s I don’t think it can be surpassed. I learnt so much about the effect the repressive regime had on ordinary Jewish lives. I’ve read City of Women, Alone in Berlin, In the Garden of Beasts – this was better.
Thank you all for your responses .. I shall be starting the book tonight .. I don’t normally like anything that Ben Elton does .. However, a couple of people recommended this read to me as they thought it would be up my street .. Happy reading everyone x
I have heard good things about it
Ooh I’ll have to try it! I’ve read others of his and loved them!
A must book, please read and enjoy
One of the best books I’ve read.
True, the use of vernacular at the beginning of the book is highly strange and hugely irritating, but as the story develops and becomes more serious, so does the language.
Love Ben elton
Very good book. Enjoyed it totally
