I read one where the character started out fat but she slowly burned off her fat when she was kidnapped and forced to cross a desert. When she finally went back home her husband actually didnt recognize her at first.
It was really good, and I think handledit really well, she wasn’t like “ooh I’m pretty now!” It was more like “I feel really strong and I like what my body can do”
Koolaid smash for how hard I need to answer this question. The Lightbringer Series by Brent Weeks, starting with the book The Black Prism. Kip, the protagonist, is a fat black kid with a messy ‘fro and obvious signs of neglect because his addict mom hates him. He doesn’t remain “fat” throughout the series extant (last book to be released next fall) but he continues to think of himself that way, which, speaking as a former fat kid, is pretty right on. It’s not strictly YA, as he grows and matures throughout the series, so if you are asking for a/your young person, read them first or with them, as there are other plots that involve sex, swearing, fighting, politics and everything else. The fantasy is amazing. This series has completely eaten my head. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7165300-the-black-prism
