I just wanted it to be darker. A little more twisted /: The beginning I thought was great. The descriptors used made me picture a twisted carnival that might be in a tim burton movie. but the end was just too happy. especially considering all the dark twists and turns the story took. it was very anticlimactic. the magic system was also bad no wanted to like it. but i just couldn’t lol
Yeah I understand that. That’s what I wanted from The Night Curious when I read that. I love the idea of a dark carnival read, that would be amazing. I hope I can get that out of Daughter of a Burning City. I didn’t think Caraval would be dark so I wasn’t let down. Maybe I’ll have to look into adult carnival books haha. Who knows. But if you find a dark carnny book let me know. I love dark things to read.???
Okay I finished carnival of souls. It was not about a magical dark carnival as I was hoping… But it was good. But I wouldn’t waste your time because the author didn’t finish the book and doesn’t plan on it.? But I said I’d let you know. So here you go. It was very good but very disappointing that she’s not going to finish.
finally! lol. i’ve been dying to talk to someone about it! I hated the way it seemed like it had a perfect happy ending. it made me sooooo mad. what didn’t you like about it?!
@Darlene I thought it was sooooo boring. I thought the author didn’t describe anything the right way, like giving me more information about their house and the place they lived and even the characters. I hated all the characters, I didn’t care about anyone that died. I really just didn’t care for the whole book ??♀️
That’s super understandable. the characters were pretty flat. i think it could have been something really awesome if it wasn’t so concentrated on being magical and mystical just because. i think it would have been cool if it was like shutter island, sucker punched, the uninvited. like if the main character actually did go crazy and the game made her hallucinate. it was just so anticlimactic. when her sister came back to life after her dad left. i was just like really bitch? and julian too ??♀️ i was mad as hell. it was pretty mediocre fantasy in my opinion. minimal world building. absolutely no rhyme or reason to the magic system. basically when they said that some of it was real. some of it was not. they just meant that all the deaths were fake. haha. ugh. it was frustrating to get through.
@Darlene yes that’s exactly how I feel!! It was just very meh the whole way through. I definitely feel like if the characters were better I’d enjoy it more. And if it wasn’t so focused on magic the whole way through. It had a lot of promise and was just disappointing
Yes I totally agree to all of that ^^ !! The characters were so flat (I swear Scarlett would always either talk about her financé or Julian’s muscles…?) Even though the entire game was contrived by the sister and Legend, I hated how all of the clues miraculously fell into Scarlett’s lap. There were random characters who really didn’t add anything to the story (i.e the fiancé and Dante) and the entire book was filled with so many abstract descriptions that made me close the book and groan lol ?
another thing that i wondered was if the game was directed just at scarlett, wtf were all the other players doing / looking for?! cause there’s no possible way anyone else would have known certain things or got certain clues. were they all just actors? the fiancé and pleasing father shit got so old too. i would have been happy to have gotten away from all of that.
yes I wondered the same thing! At first I thought they were all actors….but then there’s was that man who stole Scarlett’s earrings and fought Julian when he went to retrieve them, so at this point I have no idea. Not that a character needs a reason to be abusive, but I didn’t enjoy how after the mom left, he just became insane. what did you think of the fact that the grandmother was connected to Legend?
honestly. i think i would have liked it more if he was evil and the game went bad because he was holding a grudge again their grandma. it would have been better than the happy ending. lol.
it definitely would have been better. At first I thought that Julian’s shadiness towards his goal in the game was because Legend did something to him last time he played and now he wanted to get revenge by killing him. I wish the book didn’t have the happy ending.
Also I read it awhile back so my memory might be foggy but I was confused about how the sister was able to come back to life. In the dress shop, Scarlett answered the question with something about her sister and it didn’t work as payment because it wasn’t true, yet she was able to use her ‘wish’ to bring the sister back to life and not Julian?
Tells said something along the lines of Scarlett had her own magic to bring her back. They knew scarlett would bring her back no matter what. or something like that. it really didn’t make much sense to me either. the magic system was boo boo
i agree. Overall i felt as though the plot was poorly written and attempted to use glorifying descriptions of the magic world to attempt to make up for it. I must say I did laugh out loud for a solid minute or two at the fact Legend’s alias was literally an anagram of his name: DeEngl ?
I got really bored with it. I did finish it, hoping it would better but… in a way, serves me right for reading something on the basis of “lots of people are loving this”.
(And, in all honesty, i didn’t even find it all that “well written” as people keep saying it is…).
Nope, I loved it lol
I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy it. Its never fun reading a book you don’t like. I hope your next read is magical for you.?

So I went to the library today and found this little number. It’s supposed to be dark(also about a carnival). I’ll let you know if it is or not.
Fingers crossed.

I’m glad there is someone else out there that thought the same! everyone else seemed to love it. haha.

@Darlene please join book talk if you’d like. We loooove hearing all opinions, it makes the discussion so much more interesting!!
I was meh about it. I didn’t hate it but I won’t be reading #2
Oh I’m bummed you didn’t like it. It’s one of my favorites!!!!
