The three ladies known for British whodunnits are Agatha Christie, P.D. James and Ruth Rendell. The top ranking male writer is Peter James, who I know absolutely nothing about and have never read.
I absolutely love James Oswald! He writes crime set in Edinburgh but with an occult twist so different to the usual crime books. Also love Sharon Bolton’s Lacey Flint series (& her standalone thrillers too
MJ Arlidge, MC Beaton, Martin Edwards, CJ Sansom, Agatha Christie, R.D. Wingfield, Colin Dexter, Arthur Conan Doyle, Ruth Rendell, Lee Childs, John Le Carre, Dick Francis, Louise Penny, not really a genre I read much
@Alison – have you read anything similar? New genre for me so don’t know where to start. I only found it because it was a free audiobook from HarperCollins. x
@Vicki – I tried Elly Griffiths Dr Ruth Galloway series but not quite as good. If you are prepared to go outside Britain , try Jane Harper’s Aaron Falk books , The Dry and Force of Nature set in Australia. Really good.
Morag Morrison. Yes and No…Britain is the island where England, Scotland and Wales are the 3 countries on it, so “British” would just be a correct, geographic adjective for those countries. In the UK..which would include the country of N. Ireland, I don’t ever remember meeting any of those citizens, who considered themselves British, and I’m an Aussie with a father born in Edinburgh, and that’s about as complicated as I’m getting, with no political comment on independence. No intention of being offensive, just admiration for a wonderful author….Denise Mina.
Well, politically and constitutionally, at this time Scotland is part of the United Kingdom, even if as you say many Scots would describe themselves as Scottish first rather than British. The way you phrased your comment struck me as curious, however I have no wish to cross swords with you over semantics, so peace ✌️? On the subject of Denise Mina, I actually met her a few years ago when she came to Aberdeen to give a talk. She was a very entertaining and humerous speaker, and I was lucky enough to win a copy of the book she was promoting at the time. We’d had a conversation during the evening about my liking for listening to the radio, and she signed the book ‘To Morag – Radio Fiend’ ☺️ I was well-chuffed! ? Happy reading ?
