It’s continuous education for me, there’s always something I can learn and I like to soak up as much information as I can. It’s definitely also an escape for me; sometimes this world is too much to handle and reading can help block it out of my mind.
I also read while my other half plays Xbox-it’s how we get our quality time in☺️
To calm myself, to escape. At 60 I’m just beginning to realize how much anxiety has really impacted and impacts my life. I think I read because I have to.
To understand the why behind the things that happen in my life. Let me explain with an example : One of these days I was talking to a friend of mine and he made a statement about his liking of something which is not broadly accepted in the society and then he went on to justify it for a while even though I needed no justification. This got me curious and suddenly something that I had read in past fit this pattern. People have the tendency to explain or justify when the underlying trust in the relationship is not that strong. When I dug in the situation I found that was the case. We as human beings are hard to understand and books give me this toolbox of patterns and experience that other people have had and I can not be more thankful for them 🙂
So many reasons! It’s my escape, but also my adventure. When I go too long without being able to read I stop feeling like myself. There is something about just seeing words on a page that makes me feel “right” inside. I read to know and to understand others, this world, and myself.
To learn, to try and open my mind more, and to understand people/the human condition/life better…to be honest, I sometimes also seek validation and support/nurturance when I read…certain writers will make me realize I am not the only one in whatever difficult emotions I might be experiencing. It’s interesting to read everyone’s comments – I realized that I don’t read as much to escape or for adventure, so maybe I should try that 🙂
To keep my brain sharp, to distract me from problems, to escape, to learn, to grow my vocabulary, because it’s required for my class or profession, because I’m fascinated with the topic, to be a good conversationalist, to be a good role model for my kids, because I like to, because I’m bored with whats on tv, because I don’t feel good, because I feel great, as a gift to myself, to figure out the answer to a question I have or solve a problem, to enrich my soul, to argue my point better, to refine my skills, to avoid work or housework or other things I should be doing…
I love to because you will never understand people so fully as you can understand the characters in a book. I can admire without the fear of being terribly disappointed, I can love without bearing the burden of a relationship, I can hate wihout being mean and unjust towards a real person. That’s why I like to write, too: I like to “meet” the characters. Also, the power and beauty and ambiguity of language fascinates me. The stories. It seems more real than reality. <3
Because there is NOTHING like a good book on a cold winters night with my husband by my side, a cat in my lap (with the book on top) and the Christmas tree lit in the corner. There is something about that peace that is so addicting.
Escape. For me it’s a crutch but I think a healthy one. If I don’t have a book I feel anxious. I have to be reading something. I’ve been this way since I was little
Strangely I hate watching television which others find relaxing and a form of escape. I live in both the USA and Australia and all of my film watching happens at 35,000 feet.
To learn, to escape boredom. I keep an audiobook on my phone and my kindle in my purse. I become anxious if I don’t have reading material. I learned to read at 3 years old and have never stopped.
To travel, take mental vacations, meet new “people” and learn about their lives, thoughts, etc., to escape from whatever might be weighing me down at the moment, to expand my mind and perceptions, but mostly just because I love to.
Part love, distraction, and it’s a lifeline for me(next to no one knows roughly about the last 2) until now, to name a few is why I read. Haven’t read the comments since I’m just now seeing this but @Robin and @Jocelynn your comment are spot on for me to. Catch you all later!
To live a life I will only live within my mind through letters on parchment. I am the king, the assassin. The Hero, and villain. I live in many different worlds through many different eyes. That’s why I read.
Curiosity, knowledge. The power to create via the imagination. To feel connected with other cultures or generations. To be moved, to feel passion. To laugh and escape.
to escape. to delve into past eras and learn from them and delve deeper into the minds and lives that lived in those eras. the more detail, the better. Also, to renew my mind and spirit
So I can sound smart at my book club! To “meet” people from other cultures, times, mind sets… To take a step away from my life and put my feet up… Learn new vocabulary
So many reasons….to understand and open my mind, to learn, to grow as a person, to escape, to travel, to go to a sunny beach, to solve a crime, to become a better person, to meet people and to feel comfort with a book in my lap on those super cold Maine nights.
It’s one of my favorite hobbies. I love to experience the different characters and stories, I love to share how I felt about those stories to friends and hear what they think if they have read the same book
I love the feeling of anticipation as I get into a great book
I love that it makes me a more rounded and compassionate person. I think reading helps people become more empathetic
That’s like asking me why I breathe. It’s how it has always been, it is how it will always be. I don’t recall a time where I didn’t read. I can’t even answer questions about the book that first made me a reader- it is my very existence
To escape
Or, this world is just too much…
Yes I’m with you Stephanie! When this world is too much for sure!
Escape
It keeps me out of an orange jumpsuit! ? Seriously, I just love to read! I have since I learned to read. I need it the same way I need to breathe.
Yes I feel the same
Because not reading drives me mad.
To learn.
Because I just love ❤️ love ❤️ ❤️ to read.
To be entertained, to learn and escapism.
To widen my horizons
To be someone else for awhile and bring some of what I learn back with me
It’s a most wonderful gift and I love opening gifts.
It’s continuous education for me, there’s always something I can learn and I like to soak up as much information as I can. It’s definitely also an escape for me; sometimes this world is too much to handle and reading can help block it out of my mind.
I also read while my other half plays Xbox-it’s how we get our quality time in☺️
Got me out of my anxiety and depression… now I read as a hobby
To escape
To become more intellectual. To satiate my insatiable curiosity. So be distracted. To lllleeeaaaarrrnnnnn!
Makes my world feel better for me
Because I can’t help myself!
To calm myself, to escape. At 60 I’m just beginning to realize how much anxiety has really impacted and impacts my life. I think I read because I have to.
Same here …
try art too it is amazing for anxiety
My coach says the same
@Rhea if only I had the tiniest sliver of artistic ability I would
Try zentangle anyone can do it even kids. It’s amazing when you are doing it, how calm you become and your worries go away.
I color with my daughter and it helps a lot
OMG I just googled zentangle. I’ve done this since I was tiny. I feel weirdly upset that other people do what I thought was mine. ??
To be entertained, to learn, to do something, as mental exercise
To step inside someone else’s skin, live their life, feel their feelings.
Escape
I love to time travel. ?
To understand the why behind the things that happen in my life. Let me explain with an example : One of these days I was talking to a friend of mine and he made a statement about his liking of something which is not broadly accepted in the society and then he went on to justify it for a while even though I needed no justification. Love the adventure
Knowledge, enrichment, pleasure.
Because I love stories about other lives, other places, other understandings, other ways of life, and other peoples’ dreams.
Why do I breath?
it fills my soul
Beautiful answer Rhea. X
So many reasons! It’s my escape, but also my adventure. When I go too long without being able to read I stop feeling like myself. There is something about just seeing words on a page that makes me feel “right” inside. I read to know and to understand others, this world, and myself.
To learn, be inspired, live vicariously, feed my hopes, dreams and interests
Because it make sense.
Why do I breathe? To survive. Same with reading.
Escapism, relaxation, education, and the magic.
I am always interesting in something I don,t know, and I wish l could see the truth behind everything around the world.
To get out of my head
Why not!
To escape.
To learn , enjoy, and have new experiences,
To enter another world
To escape
Because I don’t know how not to. What do people do with the time in the bus commuting, if they are not reading? That’s the real question. ☺️
Ha ha! I get travel sick, so reading in a car or bus is not an option, so that’s what audiobooks are for ?
True. But that qualifies as reading ☺️
@Sonia Fair enough, I’ll take that ?
Knowledge is power
Life without knowledge is death in disguise……
Because I can.
Seriously, for entertainment, to travel to other worlds and times and to satisfy my craving for learning.
Adventure, understanding, escape.
To learn.
To enjoy.
To entertain my mind/soul.
To never turn into an idiot.
So I can transport myself into different cultures, times, planets…
historical fiction
To learn, to try and open my mind more, and to understand people/the human condition/life better…to be honest, I sometimes also seek validation and support/nurturance when I read…certain writers will make me realize I am not the only one in whatever difficult emotions I might be experiencing. It’s interesting to read everyone’s comments – I realized that I don’t read as much to escape or for adventure, so maybe I should try that 🙂
To live
Because, luckily, I can.
Because book is my only friend when teenagers, maybe it sounds like a little sad,but book give me a lot of friendships and fun.
Yes yes yes… so what if my friends are fictional on occasion I meet living humans who know and love my fictional friends too!
You might as well ask why I breathe.
I was just going to say that.
Because my mind is always hungry
To unwind and relax
To escape reality
Why not I love it
To keep my brain sharp, to distract me from problems, to escape, to learn, to grow my vocabulary, because it’s required for my class or profession, because I’m fascinated with the topic, to be a good conversationalist, to be a good role model for my kids, because I like to, because I’m bored with whats on tv, because I don’t feel good, because I feel great, as a gift to myself, to figure out the answer to a question I have or solve a problem, to enrich my soul, to argue my point better, to refine my skills, to avoid work or housework or other things I should be doing…

Beautiful! Keeping a copy.
@Mari Thank you!
Cannot imagine a life without books and reading.
Educate myself, Meet new “friends”, explore new places and ideas. For me, it’s about stretching, most of the time. And occasionally a chance to rest.
It’s my favorite entertainment
Why do I breathe?
Right answer!
Escape!
Peace and entertainment
My top reasons: to admire good writing, to relax, to feel less alone.
Relaxes me. I told my husband when he first met me that he will know I’m not ok if he doesn’t see me taking or having the time to read.
Best basis for marriage ever.
Information. Adventure.
Reading is part of my DNA, I have no choice but to read
Reading energizes my imagination.
Entertainment and I love being transformed somewhere else! ?
I read because I’m mental
Good keep on reading.
OMG it’s you again asking dumb questions
Why did you answer if it’s dumb? You know what never mind. Just enjoy reading ok.
To relax, to be taken for an adventure, to stimulate my brain
To get close in my head and heart w fictional friends
Might as well ask why do you breathe.
Because there is NOTHING like a good book on a cold winters night with my husband by my side, a cat in my lap (with the book on top) and the Christmas tree lit in the corner. There is something about that peace that is so addicting.
To get caught up in the story.
Because it is a way to travel to anywhere and any time. Because it sustains me.
Escape!
Exploration.
To relax.
to feel alive
To escape reality for a while and my personal form of therapy.
Escapism and as a kind of meditation
Salvation and redemption are contained in a book, the Holy Bible. To read is to be redeemed and to be saved.
To learn, to understand, to get immersed in a different life. To see more of the world than is possible by simply living inside my own shell.
To learn, to escape boredom. I keep an audiobook on my phone and my kindle in my purse. I become anxious if I don’t have reading material. I learned to read at 3 years old and have never stopped.
It’s a way to leave my world for 2 minutes, 2 hours, to fall in love all over again, to be a fly on the wall in a scary story, all sorts of stuff
Broaden my horizons, learn something, entertainment
Stress reliever at times, mostly for enjoyment though.
To escape into another world.
to be more human and sane
Escape from reality
To escape, to learn, to be inspired, to relate.
To travel, take mental vacations, meet new “people” and learn about their lives, thoughts, etc., to escape from whatever might be weighing me down at the moment, to expand my mind and perceptions, but mostly just because I love to.
Because I need to like I need air. Yes, it’s just that serious.
Knowledge. Entertainment. To be taken on daily adventures thru the characters of each book ??
It gives me life
Part love, distraction, and it’s a lifeline for me(next to no one knows roughly about the last 2) until now, to name a few is why I read. Haven’t read the comments since I’m just now seeing this but @Robin and @Jocelynn your comment are spot on for me to. Catch you all later!
????
Why do I open my eyes in the morning…eat breakfast…leave the house and come back home again? It seems an unnecessary question.
I’m reading a lot of the comments because I think the question comes from a curious person and I find the responses interesting
Engages the imagination
To live a life I will only live within my mind through letters on parchment. I am the king, the assassin. The Hero, and villain. I live in many different worlds through many different eyes. That’s why I read.
same as why I breathe
I tend toward books where I will learn or feel something I can relate to about myself or about history. Among many other of the reasons mentioned
Imagination, happiness and excitement. Sometimes real life is boring and plain.
Helps me sleep and I just love the movie that runs in my head
Curiosity, knowledge. The power to create via the imagination. To feel connected with other cultures or generations. To be moved, to feel passion. To laugh and escape.
to escape. to delve into past eras and learn from them and delve deeper into the minds and lives that lived in those eras. the more detail, the better. Also, to renew my mind and spirit
Because there is nothing better to do. I do it to have fun, to learn, to share. Windows and mirrors, always.
That’s like asking why do I breathe.
“We read to know we are not alone” gets at the heart of the question for me. The quote is from the film “Shadowlands”, written by William Nicholson.
Because I love to
Depends. Sometimes to broaden my depth of knowledge and sometimes to entertain and/or shock myself.
Escapism
Escapism, insight into other lives.
it’s the best way to escape. to see life from a different perspective, a whole new life everyday.
So I can sound smart at my book club!
To “meet” people from other cultures, times, mind sets…
To take a step away from my life and put my feet up…
Learn new vocabulary
So I can disappear for awhile!
Entertainment.
So many reasons….to understand and open my mind, to learn, to grow as a person, to escape, to travel, to go to a sunny beach, to solve a crime, to become a better person, to meet people and to feel comfort with a book in my lap on those super cold Maine nights.
Depends…but mostly escapism. I get caught up in other worlds and want to be there!
Because I love it. It’s like the Ocean. It restores me.
Takes me away for awhile from all my troubles and just love going to other places in my mind, so helpful sometimes
You have to ask?
It’s one of my favorite hobbies. I love to experience the different characters and stories, I love to share how I felt about those stories to friends and hear what they think if they have read the same book
I love the feeling of anticipation as I get into a great book
I love that it makes me a more rounded and compassionate person. I think reading helps people become more empathetic
Pretty sure at this point it’s an addiction, and often a distraction from real life.
That’s like asking me why I breathe. It’s how it has always been, it is how it will always be. I don’t recall a time where I didn’t read. I can’t even answer questions about the book that first made me a reader- it is my very existence
To escape my reality… To keep my depression levels down and because it is what I love to do ??????
Love it too much not to
To escape
Escape from reality
Come with me and escape
Best song ever!!!! ?
Reading Merton, Hafiz, Rumi and others at present
To escape reality
