There are so many great characters that it’s hard to choose only one! Today, I’d say Scarlett O’Hara. Although I shall never understand her “love” for Ashley, I admire her strenght. She’s a true fighter and survivor.
Scarlett O’Hara is my favorite as well! I believe she only wanted Ashley because she couldn’t have him. We all want what we can’t have and often take for granted what we do. She reminds me of myself when I was on the dating scene in my twenties. Lol! A guy at work told me I reminded him of Scarlett O’Hara and I didn’t know whether to take it as a compliment or an insult so I read the book! I think it was a little bit of both! ? That’s okay with me because Gone With The Wind will always be my favorite book of all time!
As odd as it may sound, Sydney Carton from A Tale of Two Cities. His act of self-sacrificing love says so much about him that was left unsaid in the novel. I’ve also always loved Elizabeth Bennett from Pride & Prejudice.
Rhett Butler. The guy just didn’t care about petty stuff, and knew who he was.
“You can’t make me mad by calling me names that are true. Certainly I’m a rascal, and why not? It’s a free country and a man may be a rascal if he chooses. It’s only hypocrites like you, my dear lady, just as black at heart but trying to hide it, who becomes enraged when called by their right names.”
Bilbo Baggins from Lord of the Rings because of his integrity. Gandalf (also from LOTR) because he knows no one, even the wise, cannot know how all things end. He brings hope. And I can’t remember his name, but the main character in Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy) because in the end he did the right thing as opposed to the thing he would have preferred to do.
Max from Where The Wild Things Are. I’m an avid reader and I’m aware he is definitely not a full fledged literary character but as a kid, MAC changed my life with his wild imagination, curiosity and sense of adventure. I credit him with my own sense of adventure and love of reading for this book showed a little girl just how powerful reading can be and all the places a book can take you.
Those are great choices! I am really enjoying Sam as well (LOTR) he is such a true and loyal friend to Frodo! (at least so far, need to read the last one, no spoilers please)
First five that popped into my head were Elizabeth Bennet, Jane Eyre, Demelza Carne, Atticus Finch (and Scout!) and Heathcliff (I love a good Satanic hero). But not necessarily in that order.
Elizabeth Bennet female, Count Alexander Rostov male. Or maybe Ari Ben Canaan , no Count Rostov. Jo from Little Women. I can’t decide, I may have to get back to you.
If I am to be nostalgic, I’d say Harry Potter. I always go back to those books as a remedy for bad days and loneliness. I love him for his bravery and for his kindness and humbleness. If I am to consider all the books I’ve read so far as an adult, I’d say it’s Philip Hutton from The Gift of Rain. I identify with him on a deep level. He never felt he fit in his own family or the world around him, he had strong, life-altering friendships that broke him but also re-made him as a person. He started out ignorant and gullible but grew into a better and stronger version of himself. Also, the book remains to this day the best book I’ve ever read.

You are all making me want to rescind my answer by reminding me of all these fantastic characters!
No, your answers are excellent!
Bilbo Baggins from Lord of the Rings because of his integrity. Gandalf (also from LOTR) because he knows no one, even the wise, cannot know how all things end. He brings hope. So many possibilities, but I have to choose Elizabeth Bennett.
Elizabeth Bennett-sassy,smart, able to admit when she’s made a mistake, loyal.
