Genre, then alphabetical by author, then alphabetical within an authors work unless they are a series or books connected through a common thread – then I do publishing date.
My system is too complex. Fiction is sorted alphabetically by author, except that some favorite authors are in a different set of cases in another room. Biography is sorted by the subject, books about books alphabetically by author, as are religion and philosophy. Reference works are in a bookcase behind my desk within easy reach. Science and math have their own bookcase ordered by topic. French books are separate and sorted by author. Books in sets have their own case. Travel is sorted by subject —London, Paris, Venice, other places.
I never sort books on the shelves – there are (far) too many of them – only (so far as I can) inside my head. When I had a used bookstore, I also shelved haphazardly (on purpose); some customers appreciated this, most (I have to say) were irritated. More generally, I like @Lieselotte‘s attitude (above). She sorts them by feeling
Alphabetical arrangements and/or according to genre / author / title / colour / size and so forth always strikes me as much too law-abiding and ‘prudent’ (not a quality I rate highly)
Size. And language. Also foreign and domestic. Then there is one shelf just for books on writing that includes dictionaries, Elements of Style and Stephen Kiing´s on Writing.
Alphabetical author last name, and then in order of copyright date. I do separate paperbacks and hardcover, my fiction from my non, separate my inspirational titles from mainstream.
Alphabetical order by author’s last name then true crime, other non-fiction & fiction. Then I start with paperbacks, over-sized soft cover & hard cover. Yes I am a little OCD when it comes to my library. ?
Right now they are unsorted. ? But I prefer alphabetical by author, then by series if there are any, and stand alones by the same author are alphabetical by title. ? I love sorting my books! ?
Genre, usually. But if I’m in a hurry, or too busy to choose, I just put them in an open bookshelf…if I have one. Otherwise, they go in a stack by my reading chair.
I forgot to say all fiction are together, all True Crime is together, all of my non-fiction is together. Then how my husband sorts his is by subject matter as his are all non-fiction.

Thus far my hard copies are sorted in stacks and stacks of boxes in no particular order. “Cept, I do like to keep my reference books in one box. 😉
Genre. If i feel up to it ill sort alphabetically by author
Mostly by author, not necessarily alphabetically though.
Author, in order if a series.
By author but if it’s like self help books they go by themselves then once done by author I do it either alphabetical or by series order
Color….. not kidding
I always change it. Somedays I want it sorted by size, somedays author. It ends up being arranged in a way that allows me to get more on the shelf.

I have a bookshelf just for my classics and religious books the other shelf for the rest of my library
By author- Series reading order then stand alones by year/alphabetically depending how many there are on my shelf.
I donate mine after I read them. I figured someone else could enjoy them when they could not afford to buy a book themselves.
Feel free to donate em to me anytime! I’ll give em a good home and pass along the ones i may already have!
