If you can, donate them to your local hospital or care home.

I donate mine to Goodwill. You never get a lot of money and I would rather someone be able to buy them for cheap.

I donate the ones I don’t keep to either the library or an animal shelter for their sales, or I get credit at a local used book store, or I give some to people I know.

My local Books-a-Million just started doing that a few months ago. So that’s where I go.

There are local 2nd hand shops that will purchase your books. Caution: What you consider valuable is not to others! They may not want all of your collection. And they will offer you considerably less that what you are asking. The market is very different today. Sometimes you will be donating them to a local library or non-profit. Times have changed.

I sell them on the local buy ,sell and trades for 5 dollars a box . I sell the first editions for a couple dollars each and the signed ones for 5 dollars each. The books that date back to the 20’s and 30’s I ask a bit more for them.

I gift it. When I don’t like a book, I tend to think of someone who might like it better. Resale values are never worthwhile and I’d rather turn it into a thoughtful gift.

It really depends. If a book just screams the name of a certain person I know, that’s always my first choice. I’m basically a library for my friends anyway (I actually have a sign out sheet on my bookshelf and my friends know certain shelves are off limits for borrowing). I’m actually pretty happy with my current system but if I were going to get rid of books, I’d probably try to find a library in a low income area and just donate them for people with less access. I donate children’s books to our local school libraries when my kids age out of them.

I swap them at a local used book store. Even if they don’t want to trade a certain book, they offer to take it to the library and donate. My goal is to cut down on my huge pile so that works well for me.

I donate them to charity, never burn or chuck books away, no matter how bad they may be. Those two things are a horrific crime against literature and the written word.

Some independent used book stores do. I just bought a book from one of them, and she told me she would buy it back when I’m done. Usually the owners or these stores are very savvy on their knowledge of authors and books.
