Amazon
I absolutely refuse to frequent any shops in the U.K. I live in Germany.
Shop Asda Tesco or Sainsburyโs x
Amazon & The Works ( tho they’re not just released books) Waterstones & WH Smith’s.
The Works
Amazon, WHSmith and The Works mostly.
I will use any place that sells books.
Amazon and charity shops and do swaps with my friend
I’ve been checking with Abe Books and Awesome Books for new books I’m looking at for Christmas gifts, and have saved money compared to Amazon …
Amazon, the works and tesco
Any shop which sells books, not fussy
Waterstones and WHSmiths initially, then the supermarkets. Amazon is last resort.
Amazon and Waterstones
Waterstones are normally my last resort. Asda, Amazon & WHSmiths are my first choices
@Jason If your Waterstones are anything like ours I don’t blame you.
I have one problem with Waterstones. The lack of discounts. WHSmiths will do a brand new hardback for roughly half price. Waterstones will charge full price for the same book.
Waterstones usually have a few half price books
Supermarkets are great for new hardbacks at low prices. I bought the new MJ Arlidge hardback in Asda for ยฃ5.00 but did have a wander into Waterstones
recently and got a signed copy of Max Hastings new book on Vietnam war for ยฃ25.00 .
Could have got it cheaper I’m sure but its signed!!
I also got the Arlidge book from ASDA.
I did get new Ian Rankin from Waterstones. Mainly because it was half price & ยฃ10= equals one whole stamp
Also good to try new authors in hardback for low price grom supermarkets. I bought earlier this year in hardback Snap by Belinda Bauer for ยฃ5 as a gift. Wish I’d got one for myself too!!!
But today I am off to volunteer in charity shop so who knows what goodies I will find!!
I go all over wh smiths, waterstones, amazon. Hospital charity shop.
I forgot the library too oops
Local library first. They will purchase recommend books and ebooks
EBay Amazon asda Tesco works charity shops xc
Waterstones, I try hard to avoid Amazon.
What don’t you like about Amazon?
@Jason maybe that theyโre tax avoiding sweat shops?
Is that your reason for not using them?
@Jason yes. Plus I work for Waterstones.
New books = Ebay, Amazon and then the bookshops, preloved = charity , Ebay and Amazon, in those order
Local independents always first choice.
The Works, Waterstones, supermarkets and charity shop/stalls.
The Works, Amazon, EBay and Asda.
W H Smith I don’t much like
Any reason why?
Overpriced and unhelpful ,I much prefer our Waterstones ,nothing to much trouble and most recent books have handwritten synopsis
Most of the new releases are half price
Buy one then get one half price
I get a lot of brand new hardbacks from Smiths. They tend to be half price for the first two weeks
Ok must have missed that x
Waterstones are tight fisted with discounts. They will do the occasional book for half price or they may knock a quid or two off a new release.
Waterstones, W H Smith, and mostly Sainsburys as they used to have some new paperbacks on at ยฃ2.99 in my local store. Only order textbooks from Amazon.
Any paperback books in the Sainsbury’s Book Club are sold at ยฃ2.99, otherwise it’s ยฃ3.49 or ยฃ3.99 which is still too good to ignore! ๐
Tesco always reasonable there
I love the atmosphere of Waterstones, the music is nice and relaxed not too loud, the lighting is not too bright and then there’s the fresh aroma of coffee. The main downside is they don’t always have as many discounts as say Asda, Tesco or sainsburys. I’m not a big fan of The Works, I find their stores crammed with clutter, there’s no order to how books are set on shelves.
Amazon, Tesco and Asda
Amazon, Waterstones, morrisons and sainsburys Not wh Smith’s as my local branch is very poor.
Amazon mostly . And asda
The Works .. love the 3 for a fiver deal there ๐
Tesco, charity shops. Never wh smith
Anywhere really, although I tend to avoid Waterstones as I find they tend to be more expensive than other shops.
All charity shops. But won’t use oxfam.
@Mick agree, they don’t give much to the actual charity, they keep lots for their directors etc
@Glenn Not to mention they charge twice as much as any other charity shop.
@Mick we have an oxfam book shop on our high Street which is good but you are correct more expensive. I used to work for the bhf so I know about what charity store take as profit etc vs their sales. Bhf give over 90% to the work, oxfam less than 10% unfortunately. However on the flip side charity stores get no reduced rate vs say boots or tk max etc for the store rental. So overheads have to be paid
Amazon. Book depository. Waterstones
I had forgotten all about BD
Anywhere except Amazon really. I avoid that company as far as possible. The Waterston es near where I work has a wonderful atmosphere and very friendly and helpful staff so I use them often.
Local independent bookshop. Amazon, directly off some authors and never out a charity shop
Charity shops are the only way I can afford books except on special occasions or when someone gifts me a book
Amazon, WH Smiths and Waterstones.
Independents, the hive, Amazon, Waterstones, Abe books, charity shops, WH Smiths. I use Amazon because I get gift cards free for surveys I complete and its the only payment option
We don’t have any really local bookshops. Used to have a huge Borders a few minutes away which was amazing!! I’ve just started Usborne so I get my children’s ones through them and mine usually online.
Mostly charity shops, usually Oxfam. But having to restrain myself from buying books from the supermarket, they’re such good value!
I love Amazon and Better World Books.
Amazon, Wordery and Foyles in London
Wordery?? Not heard of this place before
It an online store and free delivery to anywhere. Check it out ?
Sounds a bit like the Book Depository site
Amazon kindle store & Bookbub
Not heard of Bookbub before
Mostly Amazon but I love to browse second hand shops and always check if a charity shop has something I like.
Waterstones Piccadilly London I love that store
Exclusively Amazon now no local bookshops or chain stores anywhere near me
Waterstones and Blackwells and any indie bookshop I find, charity shops and Amazon. I prefer to avoid supermarkets because they’re undercutting the proper bookshops and are too populist – if they bring down the bookshops, I can’t see the cashier in Tesco ordering something in for me.
I go to waterstones as get 40% discount and then amazon
How do you get the discount?
@Jason you need to know someone who works there lol
Was going to say 40% I got 10
Waterstones, supermarkets, Amazon and any where I can get them at a good price, never go in wh Smith’s though: ours is usless xx
I’m a con nerd, well have been to 6 by the end of November and I buy a lot of new stuff there
Charity shops & car boots, I don’t buy new books unless it’s the Roy Grace series by Peter James. Got the last one from WH Smith
W H Smith is proving to be quite unpopular. Most strange.
I just do not like the layout of Smiths,,designed for speed not browsing
The Smiths in Brum has been reduced to one floor. They have all of the bestsellers. A small mixture of non bestsellers
Waterstones do one thing which not many people know about. If the price online is cheaper than the shop price, then the shop has to match the online price
@Jason really? Never knew that x
I got them to price match today ๐
I find waterstones great, however, sometimes finding a book or style can be very difficult in there. Ours is a small one but the new books for example are in one place but random. It’s frustrating for me
It is a hotch potch of a shop.
I’ve never used The Works. Never bought a book from a charity shop either
your missing out on good bargains
Sadly my nearest high only has a WH Smiths and the next closest a smiths and a very small waterstones so I am often forced to resort to online retailers. I only buy very old books (out of print) books in charity shops.
sadly our local indie bookshop closed last year ๐
do use works occasionally
Used to have an indie in Walsall.
try not to buy from supermarkets because the authors get so little!
Stoke on trent no longer has one
I don’t know how other payment works out
at least authors get a small fee from a library loan ๐
I did speak to C.J.Skuse a few weeks ago. Amazon had been selling one of her books for a low price. She said she would get 10p from each book that was sold
this can be a problem if amazon decide to put a title ‘on sale’. One good reason for using other POD sources.
I don’t know how much they make if a book is sold at full price
its a complicated subject
amazon for my kindle or if I want a new book that is signed by author Waterstones
Always try to support our local shop on the High Street.
Always on Amazon. Would buy books from most shops
Amazon for my kindle and direct from authors for my books. I donโt buy from anywhere else
Bad news, my books are only available on Amazon
