@Jason If your Waterstones are anything like ours I don’t blame you.

1
JasonQuestion author

I have one problem with Waterstones. The lack of discounts. WHSmiths will do a brand new hardback for roughly half price. Waterstones will charge full price for the same book.

3
Christopher

Waterstones usually have a few half price books

1
Camilla

Supermarkets are great for new hardbacks at low prices. I bought the new MJ Arlidge hardback in Asda for ยฃ5.00 but did have a wander into Waterstones
recently and got a signed copy of Max Hastings new book on Vietnam war for ยฃ25.00 .
Could have got it cheaper I’m sure but its signed!!

Reply
JasonQuestion author

I also got the Arlidge book from ASDA.
I did get new Ian Rankin from Waterstones. Mainly because it was half price & ยฃ10= equals one whole stamp

Camilla

Also good to try new authors in hardback for low price grom supermarkets. I bought earlier this year in hardback Snap by Belinda Bauer for ยฃ5 as a gift. Wish I’d got one for myself too!!!

What don’t you like about Amazon?

1
Ben

@Jason maybe that theyโ€™re tax avoiding sweat shops?

2
JasonQuestion author

Is that your reason for not using them?

1
Ben

@Jason yes. Plus I work for Waterstones.

1
Patricia

New books = Ebay, Amazon and then the bookshops, preloved = charity , Ebay and Amazon, in those order

W H Smith I don’t much like

2
Reply
JasonQuestion author

Any reason why?

1
Sylvia

Overpriced and unhelpful ,I much prefer our Waterstones ,nothing to much trouble and most recent books have handwritten synopsis

2
JasonQuestion author

Most of the new releases are half price

1
Sylvia

Buy one then get one half price

2
JasonQuestion author

I get a lot of brand new hardbacks from Smiths. They tend to be half price for the first two weeks

1
Sylvia

Ok must have missed that x

2
JasonQuestion author

Waterstones are tight fisted with discounts. They will do the occasional book for half price or they may knock a quid or two off a new release.

1
Tracey

Waterstones, W H Smith, and mostly Sainsburys as they used to have some new paperbacks on at ยฃ2.99 in my local store. Only order textbooks from Amazon.

3
Reply
Lucy

Any paperback books in the Sainsbury’s Book Club are sold at ยฃ2.99, otherwise it’s ยฃ3.49 or ยฃ3.99 which is still too good to ignore! ๐Ÿ™‚

Tesco always reasonable there

I love the atmosphere of Waterstones, the music is nice and relaxed not too loud, the lighting is not too bright and then there’s the fresh aroma of coffee. The main downside is they don’t always have as many discounts as say Asda, Tesco or sainsburys. I’m not a big fan of The Works, I find their stores crammed with clutter, there’s no order to how books are set on shelves.

Anywhere really, although I tend to avoid Waterstones as I find they tend to be more expensive than other shops.

3

Mick

All charity shops. But won’t use oxfam.

3
Reply
Glenn

@Mick agree, they don’t give much to the actual charity, they keep lots for their directors etc

1
Mick

@Glenn Not to mention they charge twice as much as any other charity shop.

2
Glenn

@Mick we have an oxfam book shop on our high Street which is good but you are correct more expensive. I used to work for the bhf so I know about what charity store take as profit etc vs their sales. Bhf give over 90% to the work, oxfam less than 10% unfortunately. However on the flip side charity stores get no reduced rate vs say boots or tk max etc for the store rental. So overheads have to be paid

We don’t have any really local bookshops. Used to have a huge Borders a few minutes away which was amazing!! I’ve just started Usborne so I get my children’s ones through them and mine usually online.

Waterstones and Blackwells and any indie bookshop I find, charity shops and Amazon. I prefer to avoid supermarkets because they’re undercutting the proper bookshops and are too populist – if they bring down the bookshops, I can’t see the cashier in Tesco ordering something in for me.

I just do not like the layout of Smiths,,designed for speed not browsing

2
JasonQuestion author

The Smiths in Brum has been reduced to one floor. They have all of the bestsellers. A small mixture of non bestsellers

1
JasonQuestion author

Waterstones do one thing which not many people know about. If the price online is cheaper than the shop price, then the shop has to match the online price

1
Sian

@Jason really? Never knew that x

1
JasonQuestion author

I got them to price match today ๐Ÿ˜‰

I find waterstones great, however, sometimes finding a book or style can be very difficult in there. Ours is a small one but the new books for example are in one place but random. It’s frustrating for me

Sadly my nearest high only has a WH Smiths and the next closest a smiths and a very small waterstones so I am often forced to resort to online retailers. I only buy very old books (out of print) books in charity shops.

1
JasonQuestion author

I did speak to C.J.Skuse a few weeks ago. Amazon had been selling one of her books for a low price. She said she would get 10p from each book that was sold

2
Jan

this can be a problem if amazon decide to put a title ‘on sale’. One good reason for using other POD sources.

1
JasonQuestion author

I don’t know how much they make if a book is sold at full price
