Hey everyone! I’m lookin for a thriller/horror/Stephen king like book to read. Everything I’ve been reading lately has been kinda light and I’d like to read something different. What’s you favorite scary novel?

I love Stephen King. One of his books that doesn’t get as much love as it deserves is Lisey’s Story. Fantastic!!

Some scary books I live by other authors:

The Good House by Tananarive Due

The Elementals by Michael McDowell

Ghost Story by Peter Straub

I’d recommend Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill (Stephen Kings son) was one of the best scary books I’ve read recently.

Also, Stephen Graham Jones. And Dan Simmons The Terror. Peter Straub Ghost Story. Stephen King did Thinner as Richard Bachman if you haven’t read it. And for some old school horror, Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s the Yellow Wallpaper

Unwind for quick read. If you have middle school/high school kids it is particularly good. Then Stephen King – Pet Semetary and Christine were very scary to read. Ignore the stupid movies.

I 2nd Ghost Story by Peter Straub. College friends are haunted by something terrible they did years ago. Literally. Then watch the movie starting an elderly Fred Astair. Very “Stephen King” vibe.

Speaking of Stephen King. ….have you read his short stories? Two of his best (I think) are 1922 and A Good Marriage. There is a movie out for 1922 on Netflix…..don’t waste your time on it.

Not a big Stephen King fan, I have nightmares easily. But, loved The Stand. I also enjoyed Intensity by Dean Koontz and also Lightning by Koontz.

I’ve just started this one Head Full of Ghosts, by Paul Tremblay, for the same reasons. Need something scary to offset my light, fluffy Christmas reads. I’m not far enough in to say if it’s exactly the mind boggling, terrifying read that I was looking for; but I have high hopes. After all, Stephen King said it scared the hell out of him… it must be good, right?

Head Full of Ghosts . . . I wondered when I started it why I was reading what looked like an annoying YA novel but when I realized as I kept going what the author was doing, it got better. By the end, I was impressed and glad I read it. But although I liked it, it didn’t ‘scare the hell out of me’.
