Did you borrow this book from library or did you buy it? I would love to give this book as a gift to my grandmother but I can’t find it to buy anywhere
Finishing the Pearl Thief by Elizabeth Wein. It’s good but like someone in this group said, it’s not Code Name Verity!!! (which is an excellent must-read IMHO)
I am trying to read The Zookeepers Wife but it is a slog. I’ve heard such good things about it but I am struggling to get into it. Is anyone else bothered by the random slides into third person narrative? Sometimes it seems to be from the wifes perspective and at other it sounds like a person reading a letter about her or watching her from the top of a tree. Lol. It makes it hard to connect with the character.
I just finished. It was a very quick read. I was sucked in immediately and I love that in a book. I enjoyed how the author used descriptive language (except in the descriptions of the murdered girl.. Lol!) and how he brought the characters to life. I feel as if I knew most of them personally. I liked the twists and turns and that there was closure to the story. What did you think?
Also high on my list – The End of the Affair, and the Third Man. Didn’t know anything about his personal life. I have always ignored authors’ personal lives, although recent events have me second guessing whether that was a good plan! Haha !
I read both of them quite a while ago. I picked up Third Man because I saw the movie, and felt like I was missing something! Haha! ( Yeah, I liked the book better.) I did not realize End of the Affair was autobiographical at the time I read it. I know it was made into a movie, but I never saw the movie. What I like about the book was – I felt Greene really nailed that natural cycle of affairs – passion, obsession and guilt. (Or sometimes passion, guilt, and obsession!).
In between the Eagles/49ers game and the World Series…The Lioness: Golda Meir and the Nation of Israel and The Cruelest Month, the 3rd of Louise Penny’s Chief Inspector Gamache series.

I’ve been working on a true crime book about the woman who had her sons set fire to their sister who mom thought was dead/dying. So that’s kind of tough. I did also start Book of Dust today aaaaah
S.M. Stirling Dies The Fire, a post apocalyptic series. Good stuff, but I’m distracted by the same old depiction of women as sexy cutie-pie objects. I see the same in most sci-fi. ??
It’s ok. I actually think it’s a bit slow. I think it had a lot of potential, but now, 50 pages from the end, and I’m thinking it was just an ok read and not what I was hoping.
Sea of Rust by C. Robert Cargill. Sci Fi. Halfway done and still holding my attention. It is pretty good. Humanity is extinct and the only thing left is robots
Finishing up Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Thinking of reading Kindred by Octavia Butler next because so many people on here have recommended it and I have it out of the library.
Guernica by David Boling. It is about a Basque village that was bombed by the German Luftwaffe on the eve of WWII. I haven’t read the author before, but when I read the blurb I realized I had never heard about how WWII played out in this part of the Europe. I know a little about the Basque people. I know that their language is considered one of the most ancient and unadulterated in Europe, and they have a separate and distinct culture/traditions from the rest of Spain.

@Tracey I loved most of it but the end lost me. I thought it was so contrived. I was looking for a better ending.

One of my favorites!
I’m a fan of Greene’s work. He had some pretty serious personal issues, but what a talent!
Also high on my list – The End of the Affair, and the Third Man. Didn’t know anything about his personal life. I have always ignored authors’ personal lives, although recent events have me second guessing whether that was a good plan! Haha !
The Third Man is really short but has a big impact. The End of the Affair is strange, but beautifully written. I’d love to know what you think of it.
I read both of them quite a while ago. I picked up Third Man because I saw the movie, and felt like I was missing something! Haha! ( Yeah, I liked the book better.)
