@Kelsie First and foremost, the idea that it’s some kind of breakthrough in race relations is ridiculous. Secondly, I DON’T CARE about some white brat who’s had black women looking after her all her life. I have always hated the Magical Negro trope, never understood why a black domestic would get so involved in a white child’s life, and thought this would be the story that would finally tell it like it is. Instead it’s the same old device. I would rather have read the stories that are supposedly being told, and left the transcriber and her personal life out of it. Beyond that, it’s historically inaccurate, the main plot and the subplots are ridiculous, and the writing is at best mediocre. Read Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison instead. That’s the book that really changed my life.
This is hard because they’re both SUPER good books!!!!! However if someone held a gun to my head and made me choose I’d probably go with The Book Thief
Book thief!
That is a tough one. I loved The Help!
Book thief!!
I have them both on my shelf too ??
Definitely The Book Thief
The Help. It’s so much better then the book thief
Definitely The Book Thief
Both are exceptional
I loved both for different reasons. I guess it’s whatever you’re in the mood for.
I loved both!
The Help is easy reading but full of cliché. Enjoyable enough, though. The Book Thief has more depth. Depends what you want at this stage.
The Help!
I loved The Help so much !
Both!!
I’m intending on both, just wondering which to start reading first ?
Lol. Tough call. The Book Thief.
Definitely The Book Thief
The Book Thief was a good book although a hard read.
They are both excellent reads …
Book thief
Well, both are likely to make you cry, and both are amazing, with equally amazing movies, so…coin toss?
I haven’t read either one. 🙁
When/if you end up reading either of them or seeing the movies, make sure you have a good supply of tissues on hand.
The Help
I have only read The Help & I loved it!!

The Book Thief.

The Help read both but Help stayed with me longer

I would recommend that you *never* read The Help.

have not read the book thief, but i Loved the help, it actually made me want to read more books inspired from those times
i went from that to The Dark End of the Street. which is a book about the women’s part of the civil rights movement
You are the first I know other than myself that read Dark End of the Street. The Help was a great book as well.
i loved The Dark End of the Street from the prologue. i couldnt put it down
Yes, and these are stories that weren’t told. Too many to tell too little time.
Yep. a different side of history. but informative in a great way. you feel for these women that have gone through it
I had goosebumps reading through it
Some parts were difficult. I read it with my older classmate.
Oh yes, of course they were, terrible part of “humanity”
but it was Well worth the read, and i have it in the car as a book to read while traveling now (not driving)
@Erin I need a book to keep in the car. I always have my current read with me so I never thought of it.

Omg def The Help! It’s BRILLIANT! Book Thief never grew on me, sorry to say
Both.
Well, I have both. I’m just torn on which one to go with first. I think I’m leaning toward The Book Thief.
@Kelsie, Either choice is a good one. I love both of them. The Book Thief starts oddly, but keep reading.
