I get asked this or get told ‘you have to much time on your hands!’
I am a mother of 3 who’s husband works away each week but my house is tidy etc and I DONT watch tv – that’s how!!

1
Karie

@Laura sounds like my life-I have 2 kids. 7&9 and my husband travels every week.
At night i read when kids go to bed and i do audio books on my way to and from work! ?

2
Laura

@Karie yep, no tv equals lots of reading time. I say to people I read at least 2hrs every night and they say I couldn’t fit it in. I do reply with turn your tv off then!! Theirs faces look like they couldn’t possibly do that ??

I get asked this by other teachers in school, I think they assume I must be really behind with all my work. My fiancé works evenings 2 weeks out of 3 and I don’t watch tv so have plenty of time to read

Why do you read so much? Why don’t you watch television, go to parties, go to the hot beach, go shopping for clothes and shoes at the mall or do something useful instead of buying books? why waste your time and spend your money with books, if these don’t give you success and don’t leave anyone millionaire and famous? ??

I read anywhere too. Pretty much anywhere I have to wait in line. Sometimes I keep a book in the front seat of my car and read at red lights.

Not so much a question as an assumption that I’ve read every classic.

Why do you want more books when you have so many you haven’t read yet? What are some recommendations? What’s your favorite book? (I hate that question! How could they ever expect me to choose!)

You know they made a movie of that, right?

I once went to a book group at my local bookstore. At one point during the informal chatting, I said, “I just read The Rector’s Wife by Joanna Trollope.” The woman next to me said, “Oh, I loved that movie!” And they all started talking about the movie. Of the book I read. In a bookstore. ?

I mean, they didn’t even say, “Oh, did you know they made a movie based on that book? It was really good.” THEY WENT STRAIGHT TO TALKING ABOUT THE MOVIE, PEOPLE.

Okay, I’m calming down now…

I’ve experienced this before. It’s very annoying.

“Aren’t you tired of packing all these up and moving them every time you move?” The answer is YES! But I keep doing it.

I guess all my friends are bookworms bc I just get asked what I’m reading and is it any good. I do get asked stupid questions about spinning yarn though, like, you know they have that at Walmart.

My voicemail messages: Are you there? Hello? I know you’re reading. Put the book down and answer the phone.

Other than what are you reading? “How can you keep up with more than one book at a time?” Answer: The same way I can keep up with more than one tv show at a time.

Why do you read the books when you can watch the movies? Why are you being antisocial?

Thom

Don’t really get asked any questions. The fact that I read a lot of books has become somewhat integrated into my life. So it’s not really questioned as much as accepted and embraced. Maybe the only one is “How are you going to read all of those?”, in reference to my excessive library borrowings.

You must have too much time on your hands if you can read so many books…

I work full time and have 2 children who both attend every club under the sun after school and at the weekend, I don’t have heaps of spare time I just use my spare time wisely!

I get asked how I know all the arcane, long forgotten bits of fact and fable, the obscure names of mythological creatures, how a cliff was scaled during an 18th-century battle, the name of a star and endless other, largely irrelevant trivia that pops out of my mouth. And I say – “because I read.”

I’m often asked, what book do you recommend by others who don’t read and would like to?

0

Anita

I find it very annoying that the bookworms and the readers have to some how justify reading, as if you deprive your friends and family by reading. Or somehow you are socially or emotionally stunted because you would rather read a book as go out, eat out, drinking at a bar, shopping for clothes, see a movie, and everything else the non-readers of the world think you are missing out on.
