It is a book that is difficult for many to read, because it is very craftily written. I had to read it in school but I read it again, maybe in 2010 when my husband and kids and I moved back from 2.5 years in England. I LOVED it. I’d love to hear your thoughts after you read it.
I look for specific authors that I know I always enjoy…I will buy and read them no matter what the description or reviews say. I especially love book series with characters that I can develop a “relationship” with over a period of time. I will read just about any type of book, fiction or nonfiction, but I’ve never developed a liking of straight up romance novels or cozy mysteries even though a few of the authors I enjoy incorporate a romantic element into their books. I mainly read mysteries and thrillers and like to just dive in and be surprised by the ending.
I count the pages till the end of the chapter a lot. Not that I’m not enjoying it… idk. I also check back to where I started at the beginning of sitting down to read and then how much I read when I done for right then
me too! especially because I set a daily page minimum for myself so I like to see how I’m doing. If the story is going nowhere I tend to check A LOT… lol
I smell the book regularly and sometimes forget what I’m reading bc I’m playing with the pages and touching them too much. AND – I read how it ends first. ? I have a hard time reading something if I don’t know how it ends first! ?
I also read 2 books at a time. When one gets really good I concentrate one 1. I then move book 2 to book 1 and add a book 2. I try not to have to start 2 books at once.
I live in Bermuda. When I’m in the US I go into the big bookstores, type every vaguely interesting title I can find into my cell phone, then go home and load all the samples on Kindle.
I read the first paragraph if it doesn’t grab my interest I usually won’t start the book. If I do start the book and it hasn’t interests me after 50 pages I put it aside usually to donate.
I read 3 or 4 books at the same time. I have enough books so that I will never live long enough to read them all yet still buy more plus put books on hold at the library.
That is sooooo me! But I sometimes have 10 or 15 books on the go at one time!!! I have so many books it’s ridiculous. But I still keep buying, and the library is my happy place! ❤️
I skim long passages of description that don’t add anything to the story (such as how someone looks or what they are wearing – unless it is supposed to be important). But I read a lot of classic literature and 19th century fiction so writers tended to layer on the description.
I do the same! Sometimes my boyfriend asks me to read out loud to him and I tend to skim over the blah-blah-blahs and he stops me every time to ask me why lol
I once had 10 books going at once (mix between non fiction and fiction of various genres as to tell them apart). Of course some fell through the cracks, but I let books go pretty easily if they just aren’t for me. Also, I like compulsively check how far I am in the book. Not because I’m not enjoying it or anything, but I’m also always ready to read the next book because I’m excited for another adventure.
Nilsa Martinez me too, I don’t know if it’s because I’m convinced it’s going to get better or that fact that I’ve invested time in a book that I only half Finish ?
Before I buy a book I haven’t done research on beforehand (reading reviews, already know the synopsis/author/previous books), I typically read the first few paragraphs and then skip to the 4th or 5th chapter depending on how big it is. That’s usually the point where I decide whether it’s worth reading, since almost all books start off relatively slow
I just to the middle of the book and read a few pages and then jump to the end and read it. It drives my husband nuts, but I still read the whole book even though I know what’s going to happen. He doesn’t see the point.
I always grab extra free paper bookmarks at Half Priced Books because my cat likes to play with them when I read and he utterly demolishes them, rather quickly 😉
I secretly strongly dislike books based in London. I don’t know why. I still read them but I have a strong prejudice against them from page one. So ridiculous.
I would rather re-read a favorite book than read one I’ve never read. I nearly always have to force myself (or have a really good reason, such as having seen a movie or tv series based on the book) to read a new one.
There are some exceptions, but I avoid books written by men. That’s about the only scandalous confession I can think of. I’m a good girl and read pages in order. ?
If something intense is happening, I’ll skim ahead on the page to see the next bit of dialogue to break the suspense. Which is stupid because I hate spoilers in movies and shows, yet I spoil myself in books. :/
Jill DeVol – OMG I’ve literally done that too! ? I’m always relieved when it’s happening on a page end, so then it’s hidden on the next page and I can’t cheat. It’s so bad!
I’ve read ahead a bit. I know it’s like getting a spoiler but if I’m at a part of a book I’m kind of stuck in I get the break and boost I need to continue reading. I’ve also reread what I’ve already read. It all breaks the monotony.
I’m not into Romance, unless…it’s to participate for real. ? If it’s mixed in with history, mystery or a thriller, then no problem. I sometimes peek towards the end to ensure a particular character is still there until the end.
I took a speed reading class in high school. When it gets boring, I skim through the pages until it is not boring anymore just to make sure I do not miss anything good.
I definitely read the last sentence first. Even with ebooks. Then I check good reads to make sure it’s a finished series and read the last sentence of the entire series.
I can’t stand a book with no happy ending, and I gotta know which hunk I’m rooting for.
I also lately have been figuring out when money is mentioned, with inflation what it equals out to today. Ex: I read Wiseguy by Nicholas Peloggi about Henry Hill and his time with the Lucchese crime family, and when they mentioned stealing $480,000 in 1967 I wanted to know what it equaled out to today – 3.5million
Thank you for mentioning this book … I’ve just added it to my TBR list…. sounds very interesting having used Goodreads to find more I formation about the book ….. don’t you just love it when some thing like this happens …. one person mentions a book and some one else wants to read it …. thank you Hailey xxxxx
I often don’t know what the book is about before I read it. If it’s an author I love, or it was recommended to me by someone I trust, I don’t even read the blurb. Get some great surprises that way!
I used to do that when I was a teenager, but simply because I read a lot of horror and wanted it to be a but less scary. It never worked lol and I gave up in the end!
Lol … you sound like my colleague….. she reads the end of the book first…. STOP lol. A book needs to be picked up, opened at the first page, then read till the end! Why is there any other way ?? My only reading secret is downloading a sample first onto my kindle, and that’s not even a secret ?
I can’t start a new book unless I’m at home in my comfortable reading spots. I can read at work, the library, etc but I have to be at home to start it.
Sometimes reading makes me really anxious. It’s ridiculous because I obviously love reading, but sometimes when I’m reading a book all I can think about is what I’m NOT reading and how I still have hundreds of books I’ll probably never get to and that triggers my anxiety lol
I put off reading books I really want to read. It makes no sense, but the more I want to read it the longer I put it off because I want everything to be perfect and I want to start it at the “right moment”. I’m a big mood reader.
The thought of reading more than one novel at a time or having a bunch of books on my currently reading shelf on goodreads makes my skin crawl
I have a terrible attention span and no matter how good a book is I can’t read for long periods of time straight . I’ll reading for 30 minutes, then check my phone, make some tea, pick up my book again for maybe another 45 minutes, then play with the cat. Then read again….lol i wish I could read for hours at a time like some people
I never EVER read the description. I look at the genre and jump in.
Lol that makes it an adventure
And avoids predictability! Especially when it’s got twists.
I need to try that!
I’ve never tried this before!! Sounds like it could be fun ?
It definitely helps if you’re the type who “figures it out too quickly” that’s for sure…!
The more confusing the first chapter the more excitement I have for the book (I love the strange and bizarre)
Do you love Wuthering Heights (I do)
I haven’t read it yet, but I think I’ll add to my TBR list now
It is a book that is difficult for many to read, because it is very craftily written. I had to read it in school but I read it again, maybe in 2010 when my husband and kids and I moved back from 2.5 years in England. I LOVED it. I’d love to hear your thoughts after you read it.
I sometimes skim the last chapter. I am addicted to cozy mysteries and can’t help myself. I also read three or four books at a time.
Oh me too!
After I finish a chapter, I count how many pages in the next chapter before I read it?♀️
I do that often
I always look to see how many pages there are.
Me too.
I totally judge a book by its cover! If it doesn’t grab my attention then I pass it up…. Horrible I know…
Love a good cover. No Naked folks on my books
Read the first fifty pages in one go. Either you can’t stop or you know to stop!
I give a book as many pages as I’m old. If it doesn’t have me by then, I’m out. Although I’m getting where that is a lot of pages.
I count the pages till the end of the chapter a lot. Not that I’m not enjoying it… idk.
I also check back to where I started at the beginning of sitting down to read and then how much I read when I done for right then
Ooo I sometimes do that too
I do that, but more so when reading a book of short stories
me too! especially because I set a daily page minimum for myself so I like to see how I’m doing. If the story is going nowhere I tend to check A LOT… lol
I smell it before I start reading ?
I am so glad I’m not alone
Me too..
I think we should have a secret society:
Booksniffers anonymous lol
Book sniffer here! ?
If I love the book I’ll reread the first page or chapter. Sometime I miss something.
I have to reread pages a lot…ADD brain!
I do that sometimes too 😀
I read the back cover page, think fr sometime ,close the book . Sniff the book and then finally start reading.
Me tooo!!!??
I never look at the last page of any book that I may read …. I like just to enjoy the book….
I smell the book regularly and sometimes forget what I’m reading bc I’m playing with the pages and touching them too much. AND – I read how it ends first. ? I have a hard time reading something if I don’t know how it ends first! ?
Sometimes, I secretly read at work….shhhhhh
Me, too! ?
I smell it lol is that creepy?? ?
Nooo I love the smell of books
Booksniffers Anonymous needs to be created for us!
Lol we could just become a secret cult of book sniffers lol
I read a chapter and do a chore. I read way past my bedtime. I’m a series-aholic.
I also read 2 books at a time. When one gets really good I concentrate one 1. I then move book 2 to book 1 and add a book 2. I try not to have to start 2 books at once.
I look for the best looking cover of a book I love so I may display it.
I live in Bermuda. When I’m in the US I go into the big bookstores, type every vaguely interesting title I can find into my cell phone, then go home and load all the samples on Kindle.
I read at least three books at once.
I read the last page of every book after the first to see if the beginning and end are worth the journey.
I’m bad about skipping ahead to dialogue if it’s an intense moment lol.
I sometimes read on my phone app while walking my dog. Not a good idea, she likes squirrels and is very fast.
I skip the boring stuff.
I write down the characters and who they are when I start a new book especially if there are a lot of characters so I can refer back to it if needed.
This is where an eReader comes in handy
I read the first paragraph if it doesn’t grab my interest I usually won’t start the book. If I do start the book and it hasn’t interests me after 50 pages I put it aside usually to donate.
Don’t rush. Read the book at your own pace. Savor end enjoy every page. ❤️
I rarely treat my insomnia because I prefer to read when the rest of my house is asleep and I can be assured that no one will disturb me.

I do the same! Sometimes my boyfriend asks me to read out loud to him and I tend to skim over the blah-blah-blahs and he stops me every time to ask me why lol
I literally read every page. The foreword, the prologue, the chapter listing etc whatever is written I read it.
I usually look at the print if it’s too small I don’t buy it. Or I’ll get the kindle version
Yea, small print hurts my eyes
@Debby me too gives me a headache
I once had 10 books going at once (mix between non fiction and fiction of various genres as to tell them apart). Of course some fell through the cracks, but I let books go pretty easily if they just aren’t for me. Also, I like compulsively check how far I am in the book. Not because I’m not enjoying it or anything, but I’m also always ready to read the next book because I’m excited for another adventure.
Totally me! ?
I have to finish books even if I don’t think they are good. If I start, I finish!
Same
I used to do the same thing until I realized I had over 2000 + books (and still adding more) on my TBR list.
I have a large DNF shelf.
I have 15 or so books going at one time.
Once I start a book , I’ve got to finish it, even if the books not great lol
I’m the same way! If I start I finish !
Nilsa Martinez me too, I don’t know if it’s because I’m convinced it’s going to get better or that fact that I’ve invested time in a book that I only half Finish ?
@Sean I feel like not finishing a book is somehow quitting and I’m no quitter! ?
@Nilsa ? good for you ?
Sometimes i skim
Me too!
i hug a book before i open it
It was a dark and stromy night.
omg why
Before I buy a book I haven’t done research on beforehand (reading reviews, already know the synopsis/author/previous books), I typically read the first few paragraphs and then skip to the 4th or 5th chapter depending on how big it is. That’s usually the point where I decide whether it’s worth reading, since almost all books start off relatively slow
If I’m close to an exciting part or near the end, sometimes I don’t read every word. I kind of skim to get there faster.?
I open a book to a random page and read a couple paragraphs to see if I like the writing style before I buy the book.
I use random .org to pick my next book unless I have an ARK or Beta due
I just turn to page 1 and begin to read. No reviews . . . just jump in the water see how cold it is . . . 😉
Hehehe!! I’ve done that. ?
I read everything before I dive in, which includes the copyright page.
I just to the middle of the book and read a few pages and then jump to the end and read it. It drives my husband nuts, but I still read the whole book even though I know what’s going to happen. He doesn’t see the point.
Boo!
I don’t read introduction. Just open and read.
I always grab extra free paper bookmarks at Half Priced Books because my cat likes to play with them when I read and he utterly demolishes them, rather quickly 😉
I read th the conclusion before
I secretly strongly dislike books based in London. I don’t know why. I still read them but I have a strong prejudice against them from page one. So ridiculous.
Haha really? I take it you won’t be visiting there anytime soon?
I would love to. I don’t know why I have this dislike. It’s so silly.
Lol my mom oddly enough will not watch any show with accents. She can’t stand them for no reason whatsoever. It’s baffling lol, I LOVE accents
I already like your mom.
Lmao
No way!!!!!
Sometimes I skim. ?
Me too.
I read the first word and last word
I’m a sucker for a map or family tree in the beginning of a book. Also I never read any poetry included anywhere in the book. I skip right over it.
If I know the ending or have seen the movie first, I won’t read it. 😀
I can’t read a book once I’ve seen the movie either
@Neon Same!
If it’s a good book I can’t sleep unless I read the ending! Lol I still read the book!
If something intense is happening, I’ll skim ahead on the page to see the next bit of dialogue to break the suspense. Which is stupid because I hate spoilers in movies and shows, yet I spoil myself in books. :/
Sometimes I’m so tempted to do that I have to cover the bottom of the page with my hand. ?
Happy I am not alone in this ?
Jill DeVol – OMG I’ve literally done that too! ? I’m always relieved when it’s happening on a page end, so then it’s hidden on the next page and I can’t cheat. It’s so bad!

I sometimes peek towards the end to ensure a particular character is still there until the end.
I like to take notes (highlights) on my Kindle. My favorite thing to do! That way, I can mention my favorite lines in my review.
Maybe the genre I enjoy most.
I like to jump to a random page and read a passage
I read the very last word and I spend the whole book thinking “How the hell is this ending with X word?”
When I’m really into a series and I’m dying to know if a character died or not I flip through a few pages to see if they did ??♀️
I write the 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, and 3/4 point
When reading a book I do calculate where half is. Ereader does it for you
I took a speed reading class in high school. When it gets boring, I skim through the pages until it is not boring anymore just to make sure I do not miss anything good.
Noooooooo!!!!!!!
I don’t know why, but I always read the ends of the last chapter first. Not anymore though. I don’t like spoiler alerts.
Omg I do this too ?

I can’t stand a book with no happy ending, and I gotta know which hunk I’m rooting for.
I’m doing something similar to you, @Brenda! I read the first and last sentence before I start reading. 😀
Lol we are bad ?
Yes, indeed! ?
I do that too!
The secret of reading a book is picking out a good book to read on your own and with your interest
I can only read 10 pages a day per book but I read around 4 or 5 books a day. In that way, I can read a lot of books without feeling bored
I do that too! My attention span is bad and I get bored very easily
I read the sinopsis..
I jump to the ending, sometimes. Checking how it will end because there are times that I can’t breathe when the ending is tragic or so ?
I read from cover to cover.. all words.
I annotate my books ?
I also lately have been figuring out when money is mentioned, with inflation what it equals out to today. Ex: I read Wiseguy by Nicholas Peloggi about Henry Hill and his time with the Lucchese crime family, and when they mentioned stealing $480,000 in 1967 I wanted to know what it equaled out to today – 3.5million

@Louise you’re welcome! I really enjoyed this book! It was a quick read. If you like it, the movie Goodfellas is based on it
Thank you …. hope to be able to order it from our library ….. xxxxx
I guess I’m weird, I just read the book. From page 1 to the last page
I read first the ending , then i read the beginning 🙂
I often don’t know what the book is about before I read it. If it’s an author I love, or it was recommended to me by someone I trust, I don’t even read the blurb. Get some great surprises that way!
I always check the synopsis and reviews of the book first on GR before starting it.
I just right in. I like surprises.
reading the end first
After reading 4 or 5 chapters, I read the last two chapters. Then, go back to where I left off at chapter 4 or 5.
I almost never read blurbs and I absolutely judge books by their cover art.
I love a good book cover, even though most of my reading is on my PaperWhite.
I read every word.
I love photos, drawings, charts, maps.
I always have a fiction and a non fiction book going, and a fiction Audible book. I may be reading more fiction books than that, even.
Then read again….lol i wish I could read for hours at a time like some people
I have issues?
I like to sit in the yard on a sunny day and relax with the story
I do my best not to read the last few pages … I may read some in the book to see if it is for me … but never the last page ….
I sometimes dog ear if it’s a book I own.
I also usually get books after reading at least the synopsis and usually some reviews but sometimes I buy based on the cover alone!! ?
