When I was young, my school had a reading counts program. I think that got me into reading. Junie B. Jones and the magic treehouse were huge factors too.

The first “chapter book” that I remember was “The Call of the Wild” by Jack London. I can instantly remember the title, and the feeling of enjoyment I had when reading that book. It’s been about 50 years since then and I’ve read thousands of wonderful books since then. Thanks for bringing back those memories of a young boy beginning his love affair with reading.

As a child, my mom always read to me before bed. It was a nightly routine. When I was old enough to read on my own, she bought me a Junie B. Jones book. It was that book series that made me fall in love with reading.

I don’t remember the exact book, but my mom is an avid reader and I had something called “Electronic Bookshelf” and you would read a book on the classroom bookshelf and then took a little quiz on the computer. We used to get little prizes or extra credit or something.

I don’t remember ever not reading. I think I had my nose in books before I could read. ? I do remember Dr. Seuss books always sparked my imagination and I love them still. Mom always let me order from Weekly Reader in early elementary school. ???

I was a really erratic reader as a kid. I’d read loads for awhile and then not pick anything up for a couple of years. Though there was a book called James Bond Superslueth (no idea who wrote it) that initially showed me reading could be fun. I’ve been looking for a copy for years but it must be *really* out of print!

Moby Dick, when I was 8. I’ll never forget hunting for the grinning white whale. My mom couldn’t keep me out of the adult section at the library and when I brought her this one she said, “You can get it, but you may not like it.” She was wrong!
