Brave, Awkward, Ghost and any of the Smile series books. El Deafo, March (with conversations) My daughter previewed them last year for me as a 4th grader and loved them but said “Mom, I’m not sure 5th graders can handle the whole series.” There is swearing and the n-word. No reason to shy away from them, just be aware that its a real depiction and that was/is reality.
March and Maus
March!
Never heard of these! Thanks!
March trilogy is excellent. It does have a tad bit of mature content. Also, Nathan Hale’s Hazardous tales are a favorite of some of my students.
Oh, and Hidden, although that is probably historical fiction not nonfiction. I can’t remember. I read it last year.
There’s the Science Comics series.
Nathan Hale’s tales, some are more mature though, I will look at the ones I have at school as well
Real Friends is a Memoir as is El Deafo. I think the March series is excellent. I love the Hazardous Tales by Nathan Hale.
Amulet —hooks them every time!
Yep
All Nathan Hale is excellent and NF. Preview March and Maus. Okay for some 5th graders but not all.
El Deafo is good. Also Smile.
I found 2 books by Nathan Hale… Treaties, Trenchcosts, Mud, and Blood and The Underground Abductor.
Drowned City by Don Brown is good.

Resistance trilogy by Carla Jablonski. I love March, but would preview you see if right fit for 5th gr
Nathan Hale’s books!
