To my knowledge this one isn’t part of a series, it’s a stand alone novel by King. If it has links to other books of his that I haven’t read, I didn’t notice.

@Donna my finger slipped and hit that emoji sorry

I haven’t read The Outsider but there’s a character who’s also a major character in the Mr Mercedes/Finders Keepers trilogy. I don’t know if there’d be spoilers for the trilogy or not.

@Sandra I think so. I really liked it

0
Nancy

@Sandra I’m
having a hard time with it, too. Only on page 25 so far it’s just very slow so far and pointless. I hope it gets better!

0
Yvette

@Nancy I really liked the book. It starts out one type of story, kinda quirky and light, and shifts into a much deeper, and for me powerful, read. Give it some time. There is a big, big reason she is the way she is. Also the underlining message is be nice to others, you do not know their struggles (and kind interactions can change the world, one relationship at a time).

2
Nancy

@Yvette , thanks, I’m still sticking with it, thanks for your encouragement!

Then I would say “Once Upon a Farm” by Rory Feek. It is the follow-up to “This Life I Love” from 2017. The honesty and the compelling storytelling have drawn me into both books. The second book takes up the story of survival through faith, hope and courage in spite of the devastating loss of the writer’s wife two years after the birth of their daughter. Both books left me feeling hopeful and inspired to carry on in my own challenges.

Erotic stories for Punjabi Widows

How was this book?

0
Marilyn

I am reading EROTIC STORIES FOR PUNJABI WOMEN now. Enjoying it. I knew very little about Sikh culture/faith before reading this, so the setting within a Sikh diaspora in London was a draw; and the title was obviously an eye-catcher. The surprise of what the Sikh widows preferred to write (rather than just to learn English) makes for a wildly different kind of story than I expected, including some humor as well as tensions re exposure of long held secrets and fears. What truly keeps me reading (am on p147 of 294pp) is the mystery aspect (potential “moral police” actions and what will happen if and when the true nature of the group’s “learning to write” reaches the woman who hired hired its young teacher). I like reading stories related to other cultures, especially where women’s issues are being addressed. This one seems pretty unique!

If you’re a big fan of hers, you might like it, but I didn’t. I only really liked the Nightingale by her, & The Great Alone was not as well written. I didn’t like the domestic violence in it.

0
Wendy

Kristen…I agree with you…I don’t think the Great Alone was very well written either. I almost stopped reading it for that reason.

1
Misty

Never read her, wasn’t aware of the DV could be triggering for me.. I’m a survivor but I think it’s important for people to learn about it, awareness to lift the stigma of it

1
Kristen

I agree with awareness, but this is beyond that. There’s a scene with the daughter and killing a rabbit that is just brutal to read.

1
Misty

Abusers use animals as a means of control at times.. not for sure if I should read it.. I’ve lived thru enough abuse.. thank you for informing me

1

@Misty It was more of a hunting thing, but without telling you the scene, it was pretty graphic and stomach turning.

On Mystic Lake was the book where I discovered Kristin Hannah. Back in the day, browsing bookstores on a rainy Saturday was my favorite thing to do and discovered it. Now I just do it online.

My story is really a good one. No plug intended I wrote a book based on my fight with cancer during my first year of chemotherapy. It is a story about a 12-year-old boy that is diagnosed with Stage Four Cancer. (His cancer is similar to the cancer I had.)
The boy learns how to use his imagination to help fight his cancer while receiving chemo, and teaches other children how to do the same. https://www.ourmissionisremission.net/

Our library has audio books we can check out from the website and they also subscribe to Hoopla, so I use Hoopla from the library as well. I listen to audio books at the gym and when I walk!

1
Sue

@Karyn What kind of device do you use to listen?

0
Karyn

i use my iPhone ?

0
Karyn

They download straight onto whatever device you are using.

0
Sue

@Karyn Thanks!

1
Emily

I do – I use my iPhone. There are still dedicated MP3 players around but with so many smartphones out there it’s getting harder to find them. And it’s a lot simpler to use the apps on a phone than transferring from a computer to a player.

0
Marilyn

I don’t usually listen to them. Can’t do them while driving or walking because then all my attention wants to be on the words and the images they evoke, which means I am not focusing on where I am going or whatever I am supposed to be doing. I guess there are only certain types of multi-tasking that I am capable of handling!

2
Shelley

@Karyn why do you think I can’t get into audio books? The only time I’ve used tapes was back in the 90s when driving back and forth to work…but it seems I just prefer reading, maybe my age, 66, I’m not sure but I hear lots of booklovers like audio books…i do have quite a library of Kindle books I can read off my phone or iPad…anyway it’s a mystery to me just thought I’d ask, thanks

2
Karyn

You know, I never liked audio books until I had a job that had me traveling 100 miles a day in a vehicle, so then I tried them, and I’ve been listening to them ever since. It prior to that, I wanted nothing to do with them! It’s an adjustment from
Holding the book in your hand! And occasionally I find a narrator that I’m. Or fond of and can’t listen, so I understand!

0
Marilyn

Shelley Aultman I have a bunch of unread books on my Kindle, but it’s easier to turn a paper page for me than to turn a page on Kindle – because I was always applying too much pressure and winding up way ahead or way behind where I wanted to go! I did read several books on the device before quitting it. I think I will eventually try it again, maybe when traveling (although we don’t do much of that, and my husband always wants music on & that’s so distracting…). I will, however, always love/prefer the feel of the book – its weight, the texture of the pages, the way its message gets passed on to me along with so many others – even occasionally its scent – much more than any electronic device. It’s what I grew up on, what molded me, what sometimes saves me.

3
Cissy

I started Audio books 20 yrs ago when I started to drive 100 miles a day for work. Now, it is about the only way I get my books. I can listen while I do anything, including housework. You join your library, download whatever they use (mine uses Overdrive) and start to make a wish list of books. Make sure they have the headset meaning they are audio. If the book isn’t available in audio, I put it on my list anyway so I won’t forget I want to read it. I never have to go to the library and always have a story loaded to go. It is just like listening to music or talking to a passenger as you drive. At the beach, you can watch the beach and still enjoy your book. I hope this helps and good luck!

2
Karyn

@Cissy this sounds like me! I still read lots of physical books (daily) but use audio books when I walk, go to the gym, clean house, and travel. Love it!

1
Karol

I do on overdrive

1
Karol

@Marilyn I’m the same way. I have a bunch of books on my kindle but I prefer the book or audiobooks. Ebooks drive me nuts!! Lol

1
Beverly

Thirty -five years with a 60 mile round trip drive!

I started with books on cassette tape! (Thank you Brookline Public Library!!) Then, we got CDs.

After checking traffic & weather reports, I would listen. I soon realized that I had good driving attention. When conditions dictated, my concentration was fully on the road. I frequently had to rewind long sections.

I can’t guess the number of books I “read” this way.

If I gave up on a book, it was generally because there was something about the reader that didn’t engage me.

I drive a fraction of those miles now, but I still listen in my car. It just takes 10 time longer.

I bought about 20 Play Aways (MP3), when the library had a sale, last year.

0
Donna

I started listening to audio books, constantly, after I have a mini stroke. It left me unable to read for any period of time. I used to sit down to read and before I knew the dark of night had come and gone. Reading was a true love. Hubby bought me a Kindle. Life was restored. I have a lot of books from Libravox, these are classics, free and no longer under copywriting laws. Also I do audible. $14 a month, plus lots of cheap ones.

0
Karol

@Donna how do you like Audible?? I get all of my audiobooks from the library on overdrive but have been wondering about audible.

1
Charlotte

@Karol You can slow down the speed if you like or make it fast but it is still mechanical. I prefer CD’s done by a good speaker, even the author themselves because then they make it sound like the way they wrote it.

1
Kim

I get my Audio books from the library on CD. I have an old car with a CD player so I listen while I drive.

2
Sandra

I prefer the audiobooks on CD’s. The digital downloads to my phone are too quiet for the car. The phone has some sort of protection for harming ears, which doesn’t give enough volume to the car speakers. Also, it’s easier to hit the “rewind” button in the car, wihout taking my eyes off the road.

2
Denise

@Marilyn I’m with you. And if I try listening at night, I fall asleep. I save them for long road trips when my husband drives.

Please, someone, convince me to not give up on Circe! I was so looking forward to reading it after all the great reviews it got on this site. I’m only about 30 pages into it but having a hard time. Do you have to be a semi-expert on Greek Mythology or something to understand this book? It’s not clicking and I so want it to!

0
Reply
Judy

Not expert, but some familiarity made it more interesting for me.

0
Eileen

I want to learn more about GM which I thought I could do with this book. I know who a few of the gods are. I’ll keep going for awhile and hope I “get” it! thank you

0
Louise

I am very familiar with Greek mythology and it made the names into real people. Hang in there. It does help you learn the stories and the mythology is very well explained. Does your copy have a lineage? Or a list of names and pronunciations?

0
Judy

@Louise , at the back of the book she tells you a bit about each of those in this “retelling”. Circe was a very minor character in GM. She built a great story for her.

1
Eileen

Well, I did hang in there and I’m now enjoying it immensely. It’s taking me longer than normal books tho cuz I have to stop and look things up! I knew a lot about Helen of Troy and the Trojan War so that helped a lot.

Rick Bragg’s The Best Cook in the World, Tales from My Mama’s Table tells the story of how beloved family recipes came down through generations. A treasure most certainly for his relatives to have such recorded but also for his readers to share in the savory and sweet goodness of family stories gathered around the foods that sustained them through hard times and good. Don’t miss this one!

Unsung Heroine by Carla Yvonne Jordan ?
Read & released in 2018

1
Charlotte

@Eileen Some people think that only the older books that are on the list are worth reading. Many new book club members say things like that because they haven’t tried new authors. This thread is valuable to me because I am trying to find new books and new great authors.

2
Denise

@Charlotte My book group reads one “classic” a year–ranging from Edith Wharton to Harper Lee to Ernest Hemingway to Chinua Achebe–the rest of our books are contemporary. Some we’ve read this year are Consider the Dreamers, A man Called Ove, The Untold and To the Bright Edge of the World. In December, we read 3 or 4 short stories from an anthology such as Best American Short Stories. We’ve followed this pattern since we started up 23 years ago.

1
Charlotte

Denise Walsh I am in two book clubs. In one the librarian picks but she does take suggestions from members and these have been almost always great choices. We almost always choose books published in the last couple of years as long as they have large print and audio also available. The other book club tries to let each member pick but it sometimes is like being a vegetarian and going out to eat with beef and potato eaters. We used to pick from the Northeast Ohio Library Association’s book list. Last year we read a lot of nonfiction like Hilllbilly Elegy.

0
Denise

Charlotte Bell, the first group sounds like my kind of book group. I take suggestions and we vote, but I also have veto power, so we read some pretty good books. When I choose books I check them out, often having read them first. I love your analogy of vegetarians dining with beef and potato eaters. ?

0
Emily

@Charlotte really? I’d think one of the big draws of being in a book club would be to discover new authors. I do like the idea of this thread for books released in 2018 because the polling for the GAR list may have happened before 2018. And 2017 books probably would’ve had a tough time making the cut.

0
Charlotte

@Emily yes but teachers around here are used to reading classics and nonfiction. I love historical fiction and mysteries best but any new books discussed on NPR or that have won awards I love hearing about. I agree 2017 books may not have been included in the GAR list.

0
Charlotte

I have increased my to read list to 80 books since the beginning of summer thanks to these discussions.

Charlotte

The best books I have read that came out in 2018 are: The Great Alone, The Immortalists, The Woman in the Window, The Home for Unwanted Girls, and The Wife Between Us.

“The War Outside My Window: The Civil War Diary of Le Roy Wiley Gresham, 1860-1865,” ed. Janet Elizabeth Croon. A true window into the life of a young teen in Macon,GA, as the Civil War impacted his family and community. He was an invalid resulting from a falling chimney and also suffered from TB, so you get a view of upper crust southern family life, the impact of war on individuals, and a look at medical realities in the mid-19th century.

Also very good was “In the Enemy’s House: The Secret Saga of the FBI Agent and the Code Breaker Who Caught the Russian Spies,” by Howard Blum. It’s the story of the investigation of the spy ring to which Julius Rosenberg was a party.

Just finished Sunburn by Laura Lippman it was one of my favorites from this year. The ending was unexpected and I really like how descriptive her writing is it really transports into the story. Her characters have a lot of depth and I found the lead in this one to have many sides after reading I’m still not sure if she was good or evil.

I enjoy her books, especially her stand alone novels. Her characters are well layered and no one is a total good or bad character, she gives you texture. I’ll be moving this to next on my tbr pile.
