Flowers for Algernon – Daniel Keyes
I read it at work and had to hide in the washroom to cry.

Thirteen Reasons Why – it was very appropriate for that time in my life when I read it. I don’t know that it would have the same effect now.

I literally slammed the book shut and threw it across the bed when I read ‘that part.’ I didn’t pick it up for 2 days. I was so mad.

@Deena yup! i read it several times before using it as a book i read to a group of 30 11year old boys. They often had tears in their eyes when i read it to them and the last 40 pages or so my voice was choked when reading! what a book! so so many lessons to learn

Hands down for me, A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, about a man struggling to live with a history of horrific abuse.
Others: Message from an Unknown Chinese Mother (about mothers in China who’ve had to give up/abandon their daughters)
A Fort of Nine Towers (beautiful memoir of boy growing up in Afghanistan),
Please Look After Mom (a woman’s adult children and husband reflect on their relationship with her after she goes missing)

Has anyone said Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows yet? I bawled through 3/4 of that book. Such a good ending to a phenomenal story, though.

Harriet Arnow wrote books about people who lived in Kentucky in Hunters Horn, and a family that moved to Detroit to work in the factories during hard times, in The Dollmaker. Her characters were so real, and the stories so plausible that when unhappiness rears it’s inevitable head, you feel the pain. Most libraries still have her books, and they are worth reading.

Veronika Chooses to Die by Paulo Cohleo was an emotional read. So far I am still not up to Missing Mom by Joyce Carol Oates. I am afraid it will bring up too many memories of my mom’s death.
