Kate Ellis, Camilla Läckberg, Stephen Boot, Donna Leon, Ngaio Marsh … just to name a few. If you’re into more historical settings try Robert van Gulik’s Judge Dee series and Ellis Peter’s Brother Cadfael-series. The Scandenavian writers are very good but also rather depressing

ALL the Pendergast novels by Preston and Child are worth the read. They can get pretty dark, but he’s one of the most fascinating characters in modern fiction IMHO. I also love the Inspector Gamache novels by Louise Penny. Her prose is simply lovely, and the stories challenging for their psychological depth.
