A great read – had no idea when I read it that it was a true story. I spent ages reading up on it afterwards

Is it ? It’s so badly written that I’m struggling and just not sure of it at all

1
Suzanne

Agreed – didn’t love it and so wanted to.

Kim

I believe the man it was about insisted his story be told by her. I don’t know the reasoning but I decided to ignore writing flaws and just try to appreciate his story. It was not perfect by any stretch but was a meaningful read for me.

Vikki

He did so because he wanted it to be written by a non Jew with no real emotionally driven connection to the holocaust. Thus the tale would be completely impartial, it wouldn’t be coloured by a victims standpoint and be more factual.

I got the impression of a story being told but not really any sense of the characters beyond the obvious

0
Vikki

@Ruth this made it feel all the more real for me. These characters were dehumanised and repressed to survive. I liked not getting too attached to anyone apart from our protagonist and his love. My heart couldn’t of taken it.

Peggy

I liked it a lot.

Could have been great, the story is interesting. The author didn’t do it justice, I felt it was all quite vague and not engaging. I came away with no real sense of what the people involved were really like.

Read Rena’s Promise. It has so much detail and heart. I literally sobbed and got sick.

1
Louise

I’ll keep an eye out for that one, thanks.

0
Robin

@Louise you’re welcome. It’s a true story about sisters surviving 3 years in Auschwitz.

0
Louise

I’ve just added it to my TBR on Goodreads and read a little about it. I think it’s probably going to be a “better” (as in more true to fact, and more insightful) account when the person who’s gone through it also has a hand in writing the book.

1
Robin

@Louise exactly.

Nicola

Was interesting enough to keep me reading but that’s about it.

I really liked it. If you want to read a really good book about Auschwitz then give survival in Auschwitz by Primo Levi a go, you won’t be disappointed

Liked it. It was a different POV than I’ve seen before. It has made for a richer, deeper understanding when reading other holocaust books as well. ?

I really want to read it. Does anyone know where I can buy a copy of it? Amazon is only pre-order and that’s where I typically buy my books.

I feel like it’s one of the best holocaust reads as its driven by hope. We have read the gruelling gut wrenching stories about this period. Such bleakness, such world weary pain.
