Although it took me a while to get into I ended up loving this book. So relevant to what is happening in society now. I can’t wait for the sequel.

This was required reading for me back in college, and it was unsettling I hated it. Now, however I appreciate it and enjoyed it ( still unsettling, though). Definitely strange but it’s supposed to be.

I must not care for these kinds of stories… I tried it twice and gave up on it twice… also gave up on Vox… maybe will try again someday… I know I’m in the minority here, since most people love it

You’re not the only one who doesn’t like it or want to read it. there are plenty of better and more realistic stories about women out there. I’ve listed some of them in another comment.

Cheryl

@Karen, I looked at your recommendations… good ones… I read The Kite Runner long ago and loved it… I have A Thousand Splendid Suns in my TBR stack… just finished Cutting for Stone, just superb!

That book scared me to death. I reread it 20 years later and it scared me all over again. Atwood is a visionary and a treasure. I don’t ever want to be in a room with her. Way too scary. Her Alias Grace scared me too…

@Maureen oh goodness yes …that was the other one I read . Never again

Read it but did not enjoy it! Why did I read it? Because I kept thinking it would improve, it doesn’t.

Margaret Atwood is a Canadian icon and as a CanadianI I should like her writing. I confess I find her so weird I have never made my way to the end of one of her books…and I have tried.

@Gail I agree I don’t even try to read her books, she may be a good writer but just not the kind I enjoy.

From what I’ve heard about it, I do not want to read it. Other books such as those by Lisa See, Innocent Traitor by Alison Weir, and A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khalid Hosseini are definitely much better.

Yeah it’s intense but also it’s a book that I’m profoundly glad I read as a fifteen year old girl. I feel like it cleared up a few things for me before I went out into the world.

1

Rachel

It feels weird because it’s uncomfortably close to home

And she wrote it in the 80’s. So kind of strange the religious extremism.

1
Reply

@Elizabeth religious extremism has been around, probably, since the beginning of time. And the 80s were ripe with religious nutjobs. We had Jerry Farwell and Pat Robertson.

You should all read some reviews and or history behind this book! It is fascinating! For example, she was living in Boston inside Harvard while her husband was studying and that was how she envisioned her being enclosed! So many interesting facts that affected her story telling. Just another proud Canadian??

1
Elizabeth

@Barbara – Yeeeh Canada!

0
Barbara

Margaret Atwood is one of our treasures!

1
Elizabeth

The author, Mrs Atwood, gave an interview recently and Said that everything she wrote about in this book has happened over Time, nothing was invented, very scary indeed, considering thé social climate in the world presently!
