Started The Hand Maiden’s Tale on a recommendation….anyone else think it was super weird?

It’s supposed to be. It’s a dystopian novel
Didn’t finish it honestly.
Didn’t care for it… I was the only one in our book club ?♀️
Ya its weird book but I did enjoy it
Loved the show on Hulu but hated the book
I really enjoyed the book
Although it took me a while to get into I ended up loving this book. So relevant to what is happening in society now. I can’t wait for the sequel.
Could not get into it no matter how many times I tried
This was required reading for me back in college, and it was unsettling I hated it. Now, however I appreciate it and enjoyed it ( still unsettling, though). Definitely strange but it’s supposed to be.
In high school we had to read A Brave New World….same
I must not care for these kinds of stories… I tried it twice and gave up on it twice… also gave up on Vox… maybe will try again someday… I know I’m in the minority here, since most people love it
You’re not the only one who doesn’t like it or want to read it. there are plenty of better and more realistic stories about women out there. I’ve listed some of them in another comment.
@Karen, I looked at your recommendations… good ones… I read The Kite Runner long ago and loved it… I have A Thousand Splendid Suns in my TBR stack… just finished Cutting for Stone, just superb!
I liked it a whole lot!
Not one of my favorites.
I did not care for it either.
A weird book yes but I loved it ! It’s probably one of my fav’ : in my top 5 ! I had to read it for class and didn’t like it very much at first but studying it made me appreciate and then love it !
Couldn’t read it. Tried.
It mind f*cked me for a good long while. I can’t watch the show.
Handmaid is not an easy read. But given today’s political climate, it’s an extremely important read.
@Ellen I do see where you are coming from.
Made me angry in current environment because I could see it happening.
Weird but wonderful.
My kind of book.
It’s weird, but I loved it. Certainly shows what is possible
That book scared me to death. I reread it 20 years later and it scared me all over again. Atwood is a visionary and a treasure. I don’t ever want to be in a room with her. Way too scary. Her Alias Grace scared me too…
@Maureen oh goodness yes …that was the other one I read . Never again
Read it but did not enjoy it! Why did I read it? Because I kept thinking it would improve, it doesn’t.
Margaret Atwood is a Canadian icon and as a CanadianI I should like her writing. I confess I find her so weird I have never made my way to the end of one of her books…and I have tried.
@Gail I agree I don’t even try to read her books, she may be a good writer but just not the kind I enjoy.
@Gail yes , she is one of those that we SHOULD like.Im afraid I don’t.
I tought of downloading it but … I dunno …
@Stephanie it’ll prey on your mind ! Well it did on mine …and I read alsorts of thrillers and scary stuff ,but this really bothered me.
Super super weird …and very very disturbing !
Yes!
it’s weird but great
Hi, !@Melissa
@Sally hiya Sally !
From what I’ve heard about it, I do not want to read it. Other books such as those by Lisa See, Innocent Traitor by Alison Weir, and A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khalid Hosseini are definitely much better.
Yeah it’s intense but also it’s a book that I’m profoundly glad I read as a fifteen year old girl. I feel like it cleared up a few things for me before I went out into the world.
It feels weird because it’s uncomfortably close to home
It’s a good book. Different but it is about a society that could actually be.
I did not care for it – I did read it. “Lost Roses” is out today ….so looking forward to that.
Loved it. The sequel comes out soon
Frightening. This is how women of the religion of peace live.
Loved it! Have you watched the show?
I personally didn’t like it. Thought it was disturbing
It was definitely different. I enjoyed it though.
What about the movie….has anyone seen it!
Is the movie as weird….or as scary?
@Linda I watched the show, it’s weird but I like that kind of weirdness. Very interesting. Can’t wait to read the book!
I loved it
I may watch it today while doing the laundry! I think it is on Netflix…Thanks <3
I couldn’t finish it. Too weird for me.
It was supposed to be weird, except it isn’t.
Of course it’ weird.
I started reading it but couldn’t get into it. Might get it to listen to.
I loved it.
Read this with my book group last year. We all liked it. Very wired and scary.
It’s amazing and a Cautionary tale
I had a hard time reading and gave up after about 4 chapters. I have enjoyed the show, though.
Read this in my 9th grade English class. Loved it! She’s such an unreliable character and I connected with that
Excellent book.
It is weird but I loved it
Dystonia books are often weird.
I was very glad that there had been so much hype before I read it. It kind of prepared me for the weirdness.
Margaret Atwood is considered to be a Canadian treasure but most of us just can’t get through her books!
@Patricia I am a Canadian and I can’t get through one of her book. My daughter really loves her books on the other hand .
Weird and didnt flow that smoothly for me. Tv series shares nothing but the title. Waste of time for me
Loved it!
I’ve read everything I can get my hands in by Margaret Atwood.
Yes, the Handmaid’s Tale is weird and disturbing and I have not stopped thinking about it since I read it 3-4 years ago….
Especially in today’s current climate.
Hated it ??♀️
Didn’t care for the book or the series.
I loved it. It’s one of the few books I’ve read twice.
I read the book years back. And liked the series. It shows how miserable a hyper religious authoritarian government could be
Gaggingly bizarre!
Very very very weird.
Excellent and haunting…unfortunately timely.
I haven’t read the book but watched the series which is really unusual for me as I am an avid reader. I found it really dusturbing but couldn’t stop watching it. ?
I loved it.
I liked it. Scared me because of the current political climate.
Remember to read intro, and note when written
Loved the show. Have the book on my TBR pile.
@Victoria me too.
And she wrote it in the 80’s. So kind of strange the religious extremism.
@Elizabeth religious extremism has been around, probably, since the beginning of time. And the 80s were ripe with religious nutjobs. We had Jerry Farwell and Pat Robertson.
I loved it, read it in my twenties, just thought it weird, then again in my fifties, understood the story more. Scary stuff, because our world of today is becoming more like the story.
@Redeana totally agree with you! Did both just like you!
You should all read some reviews and or history behind this book! It is fascinating! For example, she was living in Boston inside Harvard while her husband was studying and that was how she envisioned her being enclosed! So many interesting facts that affected her story telling. Just another proud Canadian??
@Barbara – Yeeeh Canada!
Margaret Atwood is one of our treasures!
The author, Mrs Atwood, gave an interview recently and Said that everything she wrote about in this book has happened over Time, nothing was invented, very scary indeed, considering thé social climate in the world presently!
Before I started it I thought I’d find it weird but I loved it.
I Read the book twice and watched the series on Crave tv twice also!
Don’t know how far into you are,but keep goes it becomes all too familiar with reality!
Yeah, I didn’t get very far into it. It’s not my cup of tea.
Yup
sorry not a margaret atwood fan
It gave me nightmares, but I liked it.
One of those, ‘I know this is superior writing but it was so disturbing that it has haunted me (not in a good way) for 25 years.’ Crazy that it is so old – now reaching a new audience.
It’s pretty dark. I’m about 90% through with it
Handmaid’s. It is a dystopian novel. Try the series on Hulu. Already won awards.
It’s happening in our country now. I read it years ago but couldn’t imagine it could happen. It’s happening!!!
I liked it a lot! Originally I thought it was about the past,,,,then I found out it was the future and was caught off guard.
Yep
Yep
Didn’t like the show
Was not impressed with it! I have found that I dont like dystopian’s.
I agree…I did not like the book
Yes but I liked it
No, watched it on Netflix or Hulu? Not that it;s weird, but made me very angry just watching how the women were treated.
Me too.
