So I started reading Bossypants by Tina Fey. I haven’t laughed a whole lot and I’m about 25% in. Keep going or ditch it?

Glad I got it from the library but like you I was expecting to laugh throughout. That didn’t happen except in the beginning.

It made a great audio book for me. She’s a good story teller & made chores more fun.

It was very self-indulgent, I thought. More of a “look how awesome I am” book than a “let me tell you about my experiences and people I’ve known” book.

You explained it better than I could have..exactly this!

Yes I picked up on that too!

It’s not meant to be a comedy – it’s a memoir.

I didn’t love it. Mindy Kaling’s first book was much funnier, IMO.

I had a hard time getting through it too. I realized I like the audiobooks for times like these because you actually hear the authors feelings.

I didn’t find it funny either AND I listened to the audio as many have suggested. David Sedaris is my go to for laughs.

One of his just became available at the library so I’m looking forward to it. I put the Tina Fey away and am reading Shit my Dad Says by Jeremy halpern. His dad reminds me of Eugene Levy as the dad in American Pie lol

1
Erina

If you struggled to read the book I would encourage you to listen to the audiobook. It’s not supposed to be an lol book just a book about her making her way into showbiz

I have to say I loved the part where she talked about SNL and her dad but that was about it.

Another vanity piece by a celebrity… not worth the time. My opinion, of course.

Erina

Linda is that based on having read it? Do you consider all memoirs to be vanity pieces?

0
Linda

@Erina , read it… liked her but, felt as if it was self serving. Again, my opinion of course.

2
Erina

@Linda of course, I was just curious. Thank you

Keep going! It’s not a skit, so if you’re only in it for the laughs, forget it. If your in it for a good story by someone who can laugh at themselves- stick with it.

It’s good, but it’s not “funny”. Anna Kendrick’s Scrappy Little Nobody was cute. Didn’t make me laugh a ton, but made me smile a lot.
