I’ve never disliked a fictional character as much as I did Anna, she was so self-centered. I loved the bits about Kitty and her life though.

I’ve read Anna Karenina and am in the middle of War & Peace. Personally I love both because I love Tolstoy’s writing style and the characters are fascinating. Make sure you get good translations, though; the translator of my copy of War & Peace anglicized a lot of the names (Andrei became Andrew, Nikolai Nicholas, etc) and it wasn’t quite the same.

Two of the top 10 books ever written, but you will probably need a list of characters and their relationships to keep the characters straight. If the character list does not come with the book, you can find such lists on the internet. The list should include a brief description of each character.

It took me a while to get into Anna Karenina b/c of all the difficult Russian names, but it was worth it.

1
Reply

I have a little trick for that. The pronunciation of the names doesn’t usually change the story, so if I’m hanging up on the name, I just make up one until I can learn the actual pronunciation. Like Loobioo for Lyublyu, or Susie for Sretskiya. My mom, who was opposed to foul language, used to substitute Russian names for cuss words. Her favorite was Shostakovich?

‘Anna Karenina’ is two stories in one: hers, and that of Konstantin Levin, a landowner/farmer. Anna I found too shallow to like, but I much preferred Levin’s story, to the point where I wish I had bookmarked his chapters so I could just read them again.

2

Elizabeth Robbins yes I know. But I became increasingly irritated with Anna and ended up not caring what happened to her, which rather detracted from the climax of her story. Whereas I really engaged with Levin.
