Anna Karenina is one of those novels I revisit from time to time, because it is different each time I read it. Definitely worth the time! War and Peace I’ve read once; and I have not found a need to reread it.
Agree. I kept getting mad at Anna. ? But it was beautifully written and I would read it again, if nothing more than to see if I could better understand Anna. Good literature should challenge us!
Haven’t read War & Peace yet (I will, because I love Russian authors), but, YES, Anna Karenina is absolutely worth it!! Once you get the Russian name system down, it’s a great book!!
I’ve read Anna Karenina and am in the middle of War & Peace. Personally I love both because I love Tolstoy’s writing style and the characters are fascinating. Make sure you get good translations, though; the translator of my copy of War & Peace anglicized a lot of the names (Andrei became Andrew, Nikolai Nicholas, etc) and it wasn’t quite the same.
Anna Karenina is amazing. I highly suggest finding a book with a character list in it. Also you might want to start with reading and listening on audio at the same time for the pronunciation of the names. It is such a gorgeous story. ???
I would suggest you acquire a “cheat” sheet that gives you a list of the characters and all of their names and possibly notes on the plot lines. It will help you understand them better.
I read War and Peace years ago and it was hard to follow because so many characters and the length. When the movie came out a couple of years ago, I recorded it and read the book and then watched that part of the movie. It was really good and much easier to follow.
I read War and Peace in my twenties and liked it, I’m planning to re-read it now that I’m retired. I read Anna Karenina in my fifties and totally enjoyed it, but must admit I skimmed some parts that dragged for me.
Yes, anna was good. Read it with Oprah years ago. You will want to beat yourself with it at some point, or you will wonder if the pages will ever end, but it was worth it. Get that edition that was Oprah’s book club.
I found them both fascinating. But I come from a family of history professors and poli sci teachers, one of whom is an expert on Tsarist Russia, so I’m genetically predisposed ?. But seriously, they’re both great stories.
Anna Karenina is one of my favorite books. I have read it several times. I bought the cliff notes to go with it just to keep the names in order. Once I got the hang of all the names, I fell in love with it.
I preferred War and Peace over Anna Karenina (she kinda irritated me, but so did Madame Bovary). They were both worth my time, but I like getting into the historical aspects in a book.
War and Peace has a great story but it is also accompanied by Tolstoy’s theories on war which I couldn’t follow when I first read it. I now just read the story of the Rostov and Bolkonski families and everyone caught up in Napoleon’s invasion of Russia.
If you like an author who can “show, don’t tell in tedious detail, by all means read War and Peace..I didn’t think it was possible for me to not appreciate this… but jeez…
Anna Karenina is my all time favorite book. There is no writing to equal it. I also loved War and Peace. He has the man/woman dynamic down to eerie perfection. You just read them leisurely, chapter by chapter without worrying about the length.
Maybe it wasn’t the right time in your life to read it. A few times I’ve put books down and years later read them and they’ve become one of my favorites. I loved both of them.
Absolutely! Anna Karenina, one of the best books I’ve ever read. War and Peace is hard to keep track of the characters in the beginning, but once you get to know them, it’s worth every minute.
Yes, absolutely. I used to have a 1-hour train commute, and the one bright side was reading all the great books I’d missed reading in school, including those two. Definitely worth it!
I read both. Loved War and Peace, but I don’t remember Anna Karenina quite as well. It didn’t stay with me, but I’m planning on giving it another go sometime as it’s been quite a few years. I often find I like books better the second time around
I read Anna Kareinina could not get through War and Peace. Give them a try. They are big books. I’d try to find them in a thrift store or something like that.
Anna Karenina is amazing! I wanted to reread it last year, but there are SO many other books on my TBR list, so I listened to the audio version. It was narrated by Maggie Gyllenhaal and she does a fantastic job! Another option if actually sitting down to read it is too daunting.
In War and Peace, Tolstoy wants to counter Hegel’s “great man” theory of philosophy. He wants to show that it is influenced more by the men in uniform than by Napoleon.
And there was something so soporific about reading those names. Andrei Nikolayevich Bolkonsky saw Anna Mikhaylovna Drubetskaya across the ballroom. Who can be awake after all those syllables? They just seem to lull one to sleep.
Oh yes. It may take awhile to get into War and Peace because of all of the Russian names, but keep going it is worth it and all the names will fall in place.
I decided I had to read Anna Karenina last summer. I tried. I really tried. I think it depends a lot on the Translated version you choose. I hope that is why I couldn’t finish it. Too many books, too little time to struggle with one you don’t enjoy.
Anna Karenina was the book that made me decide I didn’t HAVE to finish a book I started. I seriously think I made it about 300 pages in before I said, “I just can’t do this anymore.”
For me, it was Moby Dick. Anna, I suffered through. Keyword: suffered. Moral of the story—when you’re 300 pages in and just KNOW it will get better, you’re delusional….?
Anna Karenina, yes! I’ve not read War and Peace YET. I started AK 3 times and then finally went to the audio book and it was so much better! Great read!
Ever since I read And the Ladies of the Club YEARS ago, I have kept a running list of characters in every book I read with a few words about who/what they are. Saves me from having to waste time back paging though a book to figure out who in the world is Mr. X. A lot of people think I’m nuts. Hey…my memory is good. It’s just short!
I mean yes you should probably read them if you are interested in russian literature. I gotta tell you though, I am NOT into russian literature. I just could never make myself like it. Good luck though.
I’ve read both…Anna Karenina at least three times. If you choose one, I would choose that. It took me two tries to finish War and Peace, but am happy I did.
Two of the top 10 books ever written, but you will probably need a list of characters and their relationships to keep the characters straight. If the character list does not come with the book, you can find such lists on the internet. The list should include a brief description of each character.
I have a little trick for that. The pronunciation of the names doesn’t usually change the story, so if I’m hanging up on the name, I just make up one until I can learn the actual pronunciation. Like Loobioo for Lyublyu, or Susie for Sretskiya. My mom, who was opposed to foul language, used to substitute Russian names for cuss words. Her favorite was Shostakovich?
Both books require patience and concentration. Of Anna Karenina, it’s about what she does at the end. Won’t give it away, but it is not an easy book to read.
‘Anna Karenina’ is two stories in one: hers, and that of Konstantin Levin, a landowner/farmer. Anna I found too shallow to like, but I much preferred Levin’s story, to the point where I wish I had bookmarked his chapters so I could just read them again.
Elizabeth Robbins yes I know. But I became increasingly irritated with Anna and ended up not caring what happened to her, which rather detracted from the climax of her story. Whereas I really engaged with Levin.
I was very surprised at how much I loved Anna Karenina . It started a little slow but very quickly I was sucked into the stories and didn’t want to put it down. It made me want to read War and Peace but haven’t had time yet.
I’ve not read War & Peace, but I liked Anna Karenina a lot. It was definitely worth it.
War and Peace yes, not a fan of Anna.
Yes! To both!
Both are worth the time. Be aware they are long & complicated stories.
I lived Anna Karenina. I have not yet read War and Peace but really want to.
Me too!
Joan Butcher Farkas I hope you haven’t lived Anna Karenina. Especially the throwing yourself in front of the train part!
@Mary lol. Typo. ?
@Joan Oh! Hahahaha! That makes sense!
Anna Karenina is one of those novels I revisit from time to time, because it is different each time I read it. Definitely worth the time! War and Peace I’ve read once; and I have not found a need to reread it.
I loved Anna Karenina… haven’t read War/Peace… I’m due to reread Anna Karenina too.
Anna Karenina, for sure. I’ve read them both, years ago, and enjoyed them (differently).
Yes and yes!
Yes!
Keep track of all the names one person can have…it can become confusing…lol
^^ Good advice!
Yes! I thought it was just me!
Both are excellent choices.
Are you kidding? There’s a reason why they’re classics and are still being read. They’re both incredible books.
I tried to read Anna Karenina and I just couldn’t get into it.
same
Absolutley!
Yes!!!!!!
Anna Karenina is much better than war and peace
Agree
Yes!
I both liked and hated Anna Karenina.
Agree. I kept getting mad at Anna. ? But it was beautifully written and I would read it again, if nothing more than to see if I could better understand Anna. Good literature should challenge us!
I’ve never disliked a fictional character as much as I did Anna, she was so self-centered. I loved the bits about Kitty and her life though.
Dr. Zhivago Crime and Punishment better bet. Some books make for a good film but perhaps not the best read.
Loved Anna K!
Haven’t read War & Peace yet (I will, because I love Russian authors), but, YES, Anna Karenina is absolutely worth it!! Once you get the Russian name system down, it’s a great book!!
Absolutely worth the time!
Yes definitely!
Life is short. Those two books are long.
I loved Anna Karenina!
Yes!!
Absolutely
They’re sooooooo looooong. Zzzzzzz
Adored War and Peace.
I have picked up War and Peace so very many times and I just can’t get into it
Start with Anna…for many years it was my summer read.
Anna Karenina is amazing. I highly suggest finding a book with a character list in it. Also you might want to start with reading and listening on audio at the same time for the pronunciation of the names. It is such a gorgeous story. ???
Anna Karenina is phenomenal and well worth every page. I read it on a cruise and missed the Mayan ruins to finish the book.
Don’t do Anna Karenina! You’ve been warned. Lol
Yes to Anna Karenina!!!!!
Yes. I have read War and Peace. Anna Karenina is on my TBR.
I listened to Anna K last summer. It was worth the 20+ hours.
I would suggest you acquire a “cheat” sheet that gives you a list of the characters and all of their names and possibly notes on the plot lines. It will help you understand them better.
This helped me, the bookmark
https://www.oprah.com/oprahsbookclub/your-guide-to-understanding-tolstoys-anna-karenina
@Leslie I used that same bookmark and it was a huge help!
I loved Anna Karenina but couldn’t finish War and Peace.
Yes!!
Loved Anna Karenina
Love Anna— never read W&P.
agreed
I’ve read both and they are actually really good. There is more than one translation of each, so maybe look Into that before you decide
Fabulous both of them!
I loved Anna Karenina.
Definitely War and Peace. Less so Anna.
Loved Anna, war and Peace is on the bucket list!
I haven’t read War and Peace but I really liked Anna Kareninna.
YES!
YES!
Anna Karenina is one of my favorite books. I have read it several times. I bought the cliff notes to go with it just to keep the names in order. Once I got the hang of all the names, I fell in love with it.
I have only read Anna Karenina but I liked it a lot. (It took me two months to finish though!)
Anna Karenina…definitely!
Anna Karenina is one of my all-time favorites
Yes!!!!
Haven’t read War and Peace but yes, yes, yes to Anna.
Absolutely.
YES to Anna and War & Peace if you’ve nothing else to read.
I loved both of them!
I’m glad I read them both. I liked Anna Karenina more than War & Peace.
Yes
Anna is an easier read. Both are worth it.
Maybe I should say Anna is more palatable.
I preferred War and Peace over Anna Karenina (she kinda irritated me, but so did Madame Bovary). They were both worth my time, but I like getting into the historical aspects in a book.
Agree about the women. War was too convoluted, and way too long IMO
Not easy reads, but as with most classics, worth it.
Yes!!!
YES!!!!!
Yes!
I like the Dostoyevsky books better.
Those two books are some of my favorites. I read Anna Karenina every year or so.
Anna’s one of my all-time favorites. I re-read her every couple of years and love her every time…so YES!!!!
Yes, but the translation makes a really big difference. This pair also translated war and peace https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0023EFB1O/ref=cm_sw_r_oth_api_0WXkBbNZTVCMY
Thanks!
War and Peace has a great story but it is also accompanied by Tolstoy’s theories on war which I couldn’t follow when I first read it. I now just read the story of the Rostov and Bolkonski families and everyone caught up in Napoleon’s invasion of Russia.
Yes.
Anna Karenina before War and Peace.
Great, great literature. It’s a commitment, but once you’re hooked, nothing better!
Anna, read it again last year. Really enjoyed it. Not so much A and P
Absolutely ?
Entertainment Weekly picked Anna K as the greatest book written. Loved the movie with Kiera Kno
Ight
I liked War And Peace better than Anna K. I found Anna to be a hard character to understand.
I liked Anna Karenina but I never made it through War and Peace, I admit. If you can make it through BOTH you should. That’s hardcore!
Pssst. I felt Anna got a raw deal. I felt very sorry for her.
@Arpie Now I have to read to know whether or not I agree ?
If you like an author who can “show, don’t tell in tedious detail, by all means read War and Peace..I didn’t think it was possible for me to not appreciate this… but jeez…
Uh oh! Lord of the Flies bothers me with unnecessary description and that book’s very short!
Anna K is one of the dumbest books i have ever read. I thought she got what she deserved. I am sorry I wasted my time finishing it.
Yes!!
Yes!
YES! READ THE PEVEAR & VOLOKHONSKY TRANSLATION OF ANNA KARENINA RIGHT NOW! I’M SORRY FOR YELLING I’M JUST EXCITED!
I have tried to read Anna Karenina several times! I…can’t….
Yes and yes, or else you will never know. The greatest books have always been risk takers.
Absolutely!!!
Challenge yourself, I read it at 18. Time to reread certain books. Crime and punishment, another.
Anna Karenina is my all time favorite book. There is no writing to equal it. I also loved War and Peace. He has the man/woman dynamic down to eerie perfection. You just read them leisurely, chapter by chapter without worrying about the length.
War and Peace
Presently reading War and Peace, 10 pages a day. It’s okay, but I gotta say, I’m not feeling the greatness.
Yes!
????
Yes!
The story is great the Russian names are tough
Absolutely! Read Anna first!
Yes
YES!
I’ve read them both twice and found it helpful to make an index card of characters to keep them all straight.
I am glad I am not the only one who does that! Actually, I do that with most of the books I read. My husband thinks I am nuts, but he’s not a reader.
Yes. Both.
Both
Anna Karenina is wonderful. I would do that one first. Then War & Peace. Enjoy!
Great books
Loved Anna Karenina !
Always
Absolutely!
Anna Karinina is one of my top five favorites books. I have yet to read War and Peace.
I loved Anna Karenina. One of my top ten!
Yes to both.
I’ve started Anna Karinina at least 3 times and can’t get through it! I’m reading Nicholas and Alexandra right now and I am really enjoying it.
Liked Anna Karenina but couldn’t get through War & Peace–don’t like battle stories anyway, except for “Killer Angels.”
Loved them both!
I vote yes. Ditto Les Miserables (unabridged).
I read Les Miserables; great book!
I read a shortened version and it was great!
Of course!
Yes!
Yes
Loved Anna Karinina and Nicholas and Alexandra. War and Peace took some discipline to finish.
They are both excellent. I would however recommending keeping a character chart because the Russian names can get confusing if you’re not careful!
Yes.
Both are great and War and Peace will up your class level
I tried to read ANNA KARENNINA, but only made it three quarters through…I got bored with it.
Maybe it wasn’t the right time in your life to read it. A few times I’ve put books down and years later read them and they’ve become one of my favorites. I loved both of them.
The constant explanation of names was boring, and unnecessary.
I loved them both but everyone is different. See what you think.
Absolutely! Anna Karenina, one of the best books I’ve ever read. War and Peace is hard to keep track of the characters in the beginning, but once you get to know them, it’s worth every minute.
I’ve read Anna Karenina and loved it! War and Peace I haven’t even attempted.
I LOVED Anna Karenina; looking forward to War and Peace
In my opinion absolutely. If you only go with one, again my opinion, go with Anna Karenina.
I did not read Anna Kareinina but read War and Peace. Long but loved it
Thank you for asking this question because I have been asking myself the very same question! I’m diving in after reading these responses.
Yes, absolutely. I used to have a 1-hour train commute, and the one bright side was reading all the great books I’d missed reading in school, including those two. Definitely worth it!
I read both and very enjoyable
Anna Karenina is amazing. How he could write from the viewpoints of so many people blew my mind. Only Faulkner could match him.
I’m reading Anna Karenina right now and am loving it
I read both. Loved War and Peace, but I don’t remember Anna Karenina quite as well. It didn’t stay with me, but I’m planning on giving it another go sometime as it’s been quite a few years. I often find I like books better the second time around
Yes, I loved both.
I read Anna Kareinina could not get through War and Peace. Give them a try. They are big books. I’d try to find them in a thrift store or something like that.
Yes, you should. If you can only choose one, I would go with Anna Karenina.
Yes indeed!
I’ve read both and liked War and Peace much better than Anna Karenina but that was just me. Yes, read them both!
I have Anna Karenina on my shelf too as well as the Blu ray waiting to be watched after reading it.
Yes – I am 300 pages into War and Peace at the moment. Its worth it!!
Absolutely!
For sure!
Anna Karenina is amazing! I wanted to reread it last year, but there are SO many other books on my TBR list, so I listened to the audio version. It was narrated by Maggie Gyllenhaal and she does a fantastic job! Another option if actually sitting down to read it is too daunting.
Depends on you. Anna K. Is worth the time.
Go for Anna Karenina. War and Peace is the longest novel written and tons of philosophy and history. It is a bit to wade through.
In War and Peace, Tolstoy wants to counter Hegel’s “great man” theory of philosophy. He wants to show that it is influenced more by the men in uniform than by Napoleon.
I had trouble pronouncing names in my head. 🙂
And there was something so soporific about reading those names. Andrei Nikolayevich Bolkonsky saw Anna Mikhaylovna Drubetskaya across the ballroom. Who can be awake after all those syllables? They just seem to lull one to sleep.
Definitely!
Of course!
Yes!
Oh yes. It may take awhile to get into War and Peace because of all of the Russian names, but keep going it is worth it and all the names will fall in place.
I have had a bookmark in Anna Karenina for 30 years hoping to try again
I decided I had to read Anna Karenina last summer. I tried. I really tried. I think it depends a lot on the Translated version you choose. I hope that is why I couldn’t finish it. Too many books, too little time to struggle with one you don’t enjoy.
I agree with you 100%! I used to finish every book I started but I don’t anymore; life is too short and there are so many great books to read!
Anna Karenina is very good.
Haven’t read W&P (yet), but AK is so worth it!
OMG yes! I loved both, but I think Anna Karenina is one of my all time favorites.
Yes! I’m reading War and Peace right now. I love it! It’s so ridiculously long, but tremendous.
Yes, it seems long at first, but when finished, you don’t want to stop. I found myself so immersed, it felt like a withdrawal, where I needed more.
Loved both of them!
Yes
No
Woman after my own heart. Honesty. I agree!!!
Anna Karenina was the book that made me decide I didn’t HAVE to finish a book I started. I seriously think I made it about 300 pages in before I said, “I just can’t do this anymore.”
I totally agree. I wish I would’ve tried the abridged version!
For me, it was Moby Dick. Anna, I suffered through. Keyword: suffered. Moral of the story—when you’re 300 pages in and just KNOW it will get better, you’re delusional….?
Maybe, one day, I’ll try the abridged version. But I have no desire to try the unabridged ever again lol
I’ve been listening to it and the story line is so tedious. so many details
Anna Karenina, yes! I’ve not read War and Peace YET. I started AK 3 times and then finally went to the audio book and it was so much better! Great read!
I love the Russian authors, but I had to keep a notebook so I could keep track of the names.
They are classics and if you like thing Russian yes, but hard to get through,
I loved both of them!
Yes. Yes. Both are brilliant.
No do waste your time
Absolutely!
Great novels are good to read. And the knowledge you gain you can pass on to young people
Loved Anna Karenina
Yes!
I loved War and Peace
Yes, they’re required reading!
Yes
I loved Anna Karenina!!
Yes to both. The hardest parts is following the characters’ names.
@Barbara That’s a good idea. I think I might start doing that.
@Barbara me too!
Anna Karenina is one of my all time favorites!
Yes
Definitely
Both, sorry.
Yes, they’re great! Especially Anna Karenina.
Absolutely☺
I mean yes you should probably read them if you are interested in russian literature. I gotta tell you though, I am NOT into russian literature. I just could never make myself like it. Good luck though.
Both, most definitely.
With a side of Anton Chekhov’s stories thrown in for good measure.
Yes
Definitely
I speed read War and Peace in 15 minutes. It was about Russia.
Yes. and get the translation by Larissa Volokhonsky and Richard Pevear. They are modern, fantastic translators of Russian literature.
Thank you for suggesting a translation! Translation can make or break the experience.
Did not like Anna Karenina…blasphemy?
I did not either, I could never like her.
If it is, I’m blasphemous too!
I’ve read both…Anna Karenina at least three times. If you choose one, I would choose that. It took me two tries to finish War and Peace, but am happy I did.
Can’t get past that every character has 2-3 names.
I liked them both…vote for Anna
Anna Karenina is definitely worth your time. Loved it. War and Peace not so much.
Yes, but from the start keep a written record of characters, things to remember about them, and relationship to others.
Good tip!
You can find editions with character lists (including nicknames) and a quick blurb about who’s who. Probably available online too. Very helpful!
I’ve never read it, but one of my good library friends loves it!
Anna Karenina is wonderful!
Couldn’t make it through Anna Karenina, quit about 3/4 through
Yes…I suggest reading along with a friend/book club to help you through the dry parts.
Two of the top 10 books ever written, but you will probably need a list of characters and their relationships to keep the characters straight. If the character list does not come with the book, you can find such lists on the internet. The list should include a brief description of each character.
I loved them both. I love the names.
It took me a while to get into Anna Karenina b/c of all the difficult Russian names, but it was worth it.
I say listen to it as an audio book, and let the narrator figure it out! ?
“Anna Karenina” by Leo Tolstoy is a very good novel. I recommend it to you.
Yes
I loved Anna Karenina
I never understood what the hubbub about Anna Karenina was about.
They take a lot of patience so if you have the time it is definitely worth it.
Absolutely
Both books require patience and concentration. Of Anna Karenina, it’s about what she does at the end. Won’t give it away, but it is not an easy book to read.
Thus far I have read Anna Karenina & it was fabulous!!!
What she said! Anna Karenina is masterful!
I’m reading Anna Karinina and am loving it
I was enthralled with Tolstoy’s writing!
Absolutely worth your time!
I was very surprised at how much I loved Anna Karenina . It started a little slow but very quickly I was sucked into the stories and didn’t want to put it down. It made me want to read War and Peace but haven’t had time yet.
I’ve read War and Peace more than once. A remarkable book.
I love both, they’re very different stories. AK is more personal, W&P more expansive.
It is ponderous in places, names keep changing to nicknames, but I would recommend both and add The Brothers Karamozov for more interest.
Stick with it. After a bit you get the hang of who’s who. It’s like moving into a new neighborhood and meeting everyone.
Loved both!
Absolutely! Two masterpieces by the great Russian and Dr. Zhivago
Anna Kerenina.
You must! They are why classics are forever. Like classic music, not rap, whatever that is…
War and Peace – so worth it
Definitely Anna Karenina. Just finished it and was really good. Going to read War and Peace this summer sometime.
I read Anna twice and liked it very much – once in college and once as an adult. Didn’t read War and Peace but wish I had.
Hello from Wykagyl!!
It’s not too late. It’s a great read!
Two of my all time favorites!
