I have only read the first one and the prequel, The Assassins Blade. But I love Celaena. She endured so much in her life but she still manages to remain strong after all that and stands up for herself when she needs to. I love strong female characters. I also really liked that Celaena loved candy so much lol! The author gave her some humanistic characters, instead of just a cold blooded assassin.
The story of Celaena. From the moment I picked up Assassins Blade, I thought she was so Badass. Her backstory and hardships really makes you root for her.
I haven’t read anything about an assassin before then so the story of an assassin with a tragic background made me interested. What Celaena endured made her story captivating. Even after what she went through, she was always strong and determined. Also, her sense of humor and love of books contributed to my liking for her.
Celaena!!! I started with assassins blade and instantly loved her and then Mannon completed my obsession with the series. They are probably my all time favorite characters
I read the first book and I fell in love with the struggle. That people weren’t perfect and were fighting through their mistakes and coming to terms with who they were.
Honestly? The way each book was better and better, both in terms of writing and plot. I also loved how Celaena/Aelin was far from perfect, but still always tried to do the right thing. That is the sort of heroine I get very invested in rooting for.
The character development, the growth of Celaena to Aelin with her relationships and with herself. The complex plots, twists turns, and I loved it was so drawn out and Sarah took her time. The villains.. the war.. the entire series is just AMAZING. ?♥️
Edit: & the world building. Omg it was amazing the world building. I get lost everytime I read the series. ?
@Elizabeth is the romance good in it too? I mean the actual emotional bonding just not only in the physical sense? And I’m going through a bit of an anxiety phase. Its not too dark is it? I was able to read ACOTAR and the Fever series etc
@Sabrina, I think the Romance is the right amount. It’s not too much and doesn’t take away from the plot at all. Later, because Celaena ages throughout the books they become to some people (not to me) more adult but it’s insinuated more then there is detailed. They’re is quite a bit of emotional bonding but she has relationships with several people throughout. I can’t really go more into detail then that because it’ll give it away.
It’s… what’s “dark” to you? I just need to know that first because the final book to me was fairly dark. There is no “rape” in the series or anything. But there is torture to an extent.
@Elizabeth dark as in the word you used yes, but also constant physiological horrible things happening. I know that in the fantasy genre there are battles and people getting hurt and a whole lot of stuff but I was able to read Acotar and Fever and most of Ilona Andrews and Jennifer Armenstout. Just too much abuse stuff I guess lol If bad stuff happens in small doses that’s fine to read but just a constant barrage of terror I’m not able to read about lol I really want to read this though. I have the whole series but I haven’t yet started because I wanted to know more. I hope its okay to ask you. Your love for the series tells me that you really enjoyed it <3 🙂
@Sabrina, a lot of the worst is just past memories but she still suffers PTSD from it. Kingdom of Ash it’s pretty…. detailed because of a lot of stuff that happened. But not overly-so. Idk I enjoy dark things but to an extent as well. It’s really hard for me to distinguish. I thought it wasn’t really dark but dark enough. I hope that helps lol
In my opinion you should start with Throne of Glass. There is a novella called Assassins Blade but I recommend to read after Heir of Fire (3rd book) because it makes you wonder more about her past and keeps you guessing. I really enjoyed reading it that way and still do. I have such a love for this series. I really hope you enjoy them! ♥️
Celaena mostly, she was a fresh character for the time when the first book came out and I instantly loved her, and her story also i found the side characters so interesting
The characters give it so much life. I love their sarcasm and strength. They were always like real people. None were perfect, they worked through their faults and worked together.
It took me until Heir of Fire. I bought Throne of Glass because the cover caught my eye (And it was on buy on get on half price) and it took me a couple years to realise that it was a series. Bought COM and TAB when I discovered them, got HOF a little time after it came out. That was when I fell in love and went crazy for it!
At first when I read the description, i thought it was one of those books where the girl is strong and makes things right and they have a happy ending but still I added it to my tbr list skip a few months later I still kept thinking about and bam I decided to try and usually if a great book gets me it’s all in the first chapter other the book will be eh to me so pretty much Celaena pretty this smart individual with a killer personality was just it for me
I read ACOTAR first and loved Sarah’s writing style so much I went and got TOG immediately after. I love tOG more because of the humanization of her characters and seeing how they developed throughout the story.
I read ACOTAR first, loved it to pieces, then picked up ToG because more SJMaas ? and I’m hooked. I’m onto the third, Heir of Fire, now, and I’ve only been reading the series for about three days lol
Female assasin, competition to the death, sassy female character. Sassy whitty characters, amazing plot that comes back full circle throughout the series. Did I mention the amazing assortment of hotness?? I was hooked from the start. The funny thing is that it sat in my TBR for over a year. ??♀️
I don’t know how I’m going to say this after reading all the declarations of love toward Celaena above, but I don’t know why I fell in love with the series. So I started by ACOTAR, and LOVED it, the world, the characters, Feyre and Rhys, and.. well, everything else basically. But when it came to starting ToG, yes, I admit I liked Celaena at first,-and was also waiting for Sarah’s next hot guy to make an appearance, same as I was delightfully introduced to Rhys in ACOTAR- but, now that I’m making my way through Empire of Storms, I honestly can’t stand her anymore. I guess it’s just Lorcan, Elide, and Manon who’re still keeping my face buried into the books so far.
@Hannah mhmmm girl you got to read it you’ll cry, laugh, curse and maybe need a few seconds to calm yourself down or you might throw the book away in short all I’m saying is that you need to cause it’s worth it
@Hannah it’s not love centered but the little bit romance that does happen is enough for the series like it’s that good but the suspense and the mystery and action is so good that you won’t mind it
I think the main reason I fell in love with it ( the main reason I fall in love with a lot of books tbh) were the characters. Not just celeana/aelin but every single one is so beautiful written and so wonderfull imperfect that I just connected to them instantly. ❤️ And then the amazing plot Sarah build that had storylines connecting throughout the whole series was just absolutely brilliant. I was so hooked on the story that I almost failed quied a few exams that semester. (I did do well in the end ?)
I loved ACOTAR series , so I started series with Assassin’s Blade and felt that Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight paled in comparison… still good but just not as good. But then I read Heir of Fire and Queen of Shadows and they’re both 5 stars for me! I loved the character development and the plot has thickened so much! Can’t wait to start Empire of Storms!
I didn’t fall so to speak until COM -the night of Chaol’s Birthday ? that’s when I was hooked! Then after picking the pieces of my heart off the ground, I stayed for my favourite characters ?
Female assassin got my attention (loved the cover!) Then just got caught up in the characters and the story line. Admittedly I stopped reading empire of storms because I got distracted with other books but I’m currently re-reading now!
Actually reading the book. I didnt like the coverz thats why i didnt picl up at first. But another auther i like said they were good so i decidied to read
Throne of glass gets better with every book- sarah j maas sort of likes to have a prestory to her actual story- like with acotar – the first book is like the prestore or prologue- and the actual story kicks in in the second book- with tog its the same the forst two books are prologue books- very much needed for u to understand things but the actual story seriously kicks of in the 3rd book and the fifth book is just amazing and the koa is just the best?? u’ll fall in love with all the sidecharacters which i think are often in a book just there for me or simply annoying- but with this book series i started to love them more or as much as the main character herself! I love her writing style and i hope u fell/will fall in love with the series too
How she manages to write emotion and reaction in characters, it’s a unique style. (She uses punctuation to modulate pacing as well which I love!) But that’s from another writers perspective. As a reader, I’d say the world, mythical creatures, and the confidence and smarts in her female protagonists
I fell in love with the cover and started reading it. It was the first YA fantasy I ever read and it was so amazing, I found through TOG that I really love YA fantasy. The magic, the cringy romance, cool long stories that last several books. Different creatures, different powers, world building.
Aelin’s, Celena’s, personality, and Dorian’s. Rowan didn’t hurt ?, she wrote a great love story. The magical powers- they were all so cool. I have to say though that the last book really let me down. Aelin’s unique personality was gone, she loses most of her magic for absolutely NO reason- the keys, the deal with the Gods, sucks away almost all her magic & the Gods don’t deal with Erwan. So she lost the power that made her special for no reason. The entire series was building up to this huge Erwan- Aelin showdown, bc she was the only one powerful enough to possibly kill Erwan, and then also kill Maeve. Each book the suspense of the final climax, of the entire series, grew and grew, and then blah. And a character we just met in the second to last book takes Aelin’s place and saves the day, the world. And all the fae who fled a decade+ ago the last time valg attacked then disappeared and no one knew where or how to even find them, Aelin is able to locate, reach out to, & convince them to fight. The best part of the book is once Elide forgives Lorcan and they get back together. Sorry, my answer was more than you asked… ☺️
I fell in love with the characters. Dorian, Chaol, Manon, Elide, Lorcan. I loved watching them develop. The world-building is amazing too. But I really fell in love with the characters.
Celaena/Aelin, I could safely say she is the main damn reason I fell in love with the series, (what’s there not to love?) Everyone else was a added bonus for me….
I have only read the first one and the prequel, The Assassins Blade. But I love Celaena. She endured so much in her life but she still manages to remain strong after all that and stands up for herself when she needs to. I love strong female characters. The story of Celaena. From the moment I picked up Assassins Blade, I thought she was so Badass. Her backstory and hardships really makes you root for her.
Honestly, the way it is written. I love the sarcasm and joking around. the sassiness of the characters. and The descriptions of everything.
I haven’t read anything about an assassin before then so the story of an assassin with a tragic background made me interested. What Celaena endured made her story captivating. Celaena!!! I started with assassins blade and instantly loved her and then Mannon completed my obsession with the series. They are probably my all time favorite characters
I liked Celaena and her story and I also liked the world building.
as I read the assassin’s blade first I was able to go through the journey that Celaena did, the hardships, the friendships, the hard work she did.
I read the first book and I fell in love with the struggle. That people weren’t perfect and were fighting through their mistakes and coming to terms with who they were.
Chaol. I know, not the popular consensus. Also Celaena’s story before it became too much like ACOTAR. ?
@Vue I love Chaol too!
How she can humanise the characters
Writing style and characters.
It was just so addicting right from the beginning. I loved the writing style and characters. Just everything about it.
Honestly? The way each book was better and better, both in terms of writing and plot. I also loved how Celaena/Aelin was far from perfect, but still always tried to do the right thing. That is the sort of heroine I get very invested in rooting for.
Her writing style and characters. I felt intrigued while reading book 2 and it just kept building for me. I became so invested in the characters!
The character development, the growth of Celaena to Aelin with her relationships and with herself. The complex plots, twists turns, and I loved it was so drawn out and Sarah took her time. The villains.. the war.. the entire series is just AMAZING. ?♥️

@Elizabeth well said

@Elizabeth it does thank you so much. I’ll try the first book and see how it goes. Thank you for much <3

Celaena mostly, she was a fresh character for the time when the first book came out and I instantly loved her, and her story also i found the side characters so interesting
The smallest details that brought the whole plot together
@Kaley& the foreshadowing! Ugh! I missed it so much even tho I’ve read them like 12 times before KOA!
@Elizabeth yes the writing is just genius!
@Kaley, absolutely!
The characters give it so much life. I love their sarcasm and strength. They were always like real people. None were perfect, they worked through their faults and worked together.
Nothing. I didn’t fall in love with ToG!
@Victoria that’s cool too. Howcome?
@Nicole I hated Celaena INSTANTLY and I found the plot line extremely boring!
Page two when she talks about burying a pickax in a guy’s gut.
It took me until Heir of Fire. I bought Throne of Glass because the cover caught my eye (And it was on buy on get on half price) and it took me a couple years to realise that it was a series. I’m totally judge a book by its cover kinda girl and well I loved the cover of the first book.
The characters attracted me first. The plot and everything came afterwards ??
I read ACOTAR first and loved Sarah’s writing style so much I went and got TOG immediately after. I love tOG more because of the humanization of her characters and seeing how they developed throughout the story.
I really liked the assassin aspect and it just got better from there. Aelin was a fantastic female protagonist
Sassiness
I got in for the female assassin, stayed for the genuine feel of heartbreak and the random sex she had and the fact she made mistakes…
I read ACOTAR first, loved it to pieces, then picked up ToG because more SJMaas ? and I’m hooked. I’m onto the third, Heir of Fire, now, and I’ve only been reading the series for about three days lol
Celaena

@Yomna keep going! Celeana grows a lot and it gets better!
I haven’t actually read it yet! I got the boxset for Christmas last year.
@Hannah mhmmm girl you got to read it you’ll cry, laugh, curse and maybe need a few seconds to calm yourself down or you might throw the book away in short all I’m saying is that you need to cause it’s worth it
@Mahek, lol. I loved ACOTAR! I love romance centred stories and I don’t think that’s TOG, is it?

I was so hooked on the story that I almost failed quied a few exams that semester. (I did do well in the end ?)
Character growth! They pushed each other to grow and didn’t let each other give up! ?
Mostly the hot as hell guys and the wingspans… Lmao kidding
I loved ACOTAR series , so I started series with Assassin’s Blade and felt that Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight paled in comparison… still good but just not as good. Celeana’s sass and the very thorough and unexpected character developments
Dorian and Chaol

Celaena being pretty much Buffy in a fantasy world. That’s what ????
Her world-building
Is it shallow to say the hot badass book boyfriends lol But no seriously is it?
How she manages to write emotion and reaction in characters, it’s a unique style. (She uses punctuation to modulate pacing as well which I love!) But that’s from another writers perspective. As a reader, I’d say the world, mythical creatures, and the confidence and smarts in her female protagonists
@Olivia, definitely the portrayal of emotions!
I just finished Queen of Shadows, and Asterin’s moment with Manon had me in tears ?
Celeana
The 3rd book and the world building
Elorcan I swear
The sass, and then well everything? ?
I fell in love with the cover and started reading it. It was the first YA fantasy I ever read and it was so amazing, I found through TOG that I really love YA fantasy.

Sorry, my answer was more than you asked… ☺️
I fell in love with the characters. Dorian, Chaol, Manon, Elide, Lorcan. I loved watching them develop. The world-building is amazing too. But I really fell in love with the characters.
I didn’t, I fell in love with ACOTAR. Feysand <3
The drama.
Celaena/Aelin, I could safely say she is the main damn reason I fell in love with the series, (what’s there not to love?) Everyone else was a added bonus for me….
I didn’t really get attached to the series until QoS but hmm probably the action?and the relationships between characters—the non-romantic ones.
Dorian Havilliard, Manon Blackbeak
