*raises hand* It kind of read like bad fanfiction. The only parts I liked were the ones with Scorpius, haha. That is one Harry Potter book I will never reread….

EXACTLY! I was so excited for the book to come out that I even preordered it but when I got the book and read it I wished I had never even heard of it. I don’t even consider that book a Harry Potter book. As far as I am concerned, It doesnt exist. Hermoine should have ended up with Harry, Ron doesnt have the wits to keep up with her and the book totally ruined Harry’s personality.

2
Skyler

Totally agree. Just ignore it and it will go away, haha. Have you read Fantastic Beasts or seen the movie? I think it makes up for The Cursed Child immensely.

EileenQuestion author

It does but the cursed child doesnt exist remember?

That was the worst book I’ve ever read. I hated it. It’s not cannon. It’s a fraud. I don’t acknowledge its existence.

Yes! I really don’t think the plot fits. I agree that people change as they get older but could never could believe the main trio would end up so miserable. Nothing that made them lovable from Sorcerer/ Philisopher’s Stone through Deathly Hallows was present in CC! I found it very disheartening.

0
Reply
EileenQuestion author

Plus, the pairings were wonky, Harry should be with Hermoine as Ron can never keep up with Hermoinie’s wits and Harry’s personality was totally ruined

0
Caite

Personally, I always liked Ron and Hermione together. He needs her wits and she could do with his humor. I feel like it’s a popular opinion now for people to say Ron was so mean to Hermione but look at how young they were! I said and did things I am now ashamed of when I was in middle/ high school. Ron came to really care for Hermione. I think it’s really sweet how Harry and Hermione are genuine friends without having to be romantic. But that’s just me! All opinions are valid here. ?

I was so greatly disappointed! I may never read it again and just pretend that it doesn’t exist.

ALSO as a theater person Im very confused at some of the stage direction and how it would play out on stage. Obviously it works, considering how it was on stage in London and will be coming to Broadway, but I just couldnt picture it…..

0
Chantel

I think I can only like it if I think of it as a fan fiction and not actually canon. Like I’ll take some parts of it as canon but others like the time turners and all that is head canon to me and you’ll never change my mind

0

I don’t hate it per say, I’m just upset with it. When I read Harry Potter books, I expect them to be long and tell a story. With the Cursed Child, it’s a play written in script form, so it doesn’t tell the story. You have to picture and imagine it yourself. I find it hard to try and picture anything without it being described. Maybe that’s just me, but it’s always been a problem for me. Probably why I could never write a book, if I can’t picture anything how could I write it?!

It was terrible. I have read a LOT of scripts between school, auditions, directing, and teaching theatre. This one was just very badly written. It isn’t cohesive, it doesn’t stick to the characteristics of previously developed characters, there is practically no character development, and what development there was is forced and contrived. There was no preparation for what happened. It was like the writer decided “Oh! I need a bad guy! I totally forgot that… oh, lets use *spoiler!* then I can wrap this up in five and still make it to the pub!”

The cursed child is a a fan fiction! And I don’t have anything against fan fiction(they’re grat and fun and keeps the juices flowing) but it’s the fact that it was a bad fan fiction and not researched really well.

I thought it read like fan fiction that was written by someone who was not a fan and knew only the basics of the story.

I’m with you! ?? Potterhead for 20 years here and I’m currently collecting my 15th set of the books which I re-read at least once a year. I didn’t approach Cursed Child as though it were the eighth book in the series; I just was pleased to have another, new glimpse into the Wizarding world and it totally lived up to my expectations when I went in in that frame of mind!

When I got to the part about the Trolley Witch, I almost put it down to never pick it up again. I was done. SO STUPID. But I was invested at that point. And curious. And Jo’s name was on the cover. Although it’s blatantly obvious that the names of her characters were the only involvement she had in it.
So I continued on after the Trolley witch scene and it never got better.
As I closed the back cover when I’d finished, I felt like I’d been lied to and cheated on.

Agree. I liked the format, hated the plot. It made no sense.

1
Camille

Made sense to me, but if you don’t like it that’s your choice. I, however, really did and while I don’t think it’s the best in the series it certainly isn’t trash. The biggest reason I see people give for not liking it is the format it’s written in, so I stand by the statement that if it had been a novel it would have been better received.

Trash is the Twilight saga and Fifty Shades of Grey, not this.

I didnt like it either. I remember being sooooo excited for finally getting to read it and then, when I finished it, I was just like… meh. To me, it was just like a bad fan fiction. But maybe that’s the problem, we had our hopes so high, bc we had read soo many fanfics and we all had our idea of how the characters would? I don’t hate it, but I don’t view it as canon, which JK says it is. It doesn’t work as canon, but there are some parts of it I liked. And I really liked the idea of Harry sort of failing as a father. It made him more real. The series ended a little too “everything is a-okay” for me. I really liked Scorpius and Albus though. I like that they’re besties.

1

Paty

Exactly, the plot around the relationships is good and I love the characters, young and older alike (just how I pictured them to become) but the adventure plot is just so full of holes.

1
Lisa

@Paty Agreed. The villain bothers me so much cuz I can’t see how they even exist. We were there with Bellatrix, in the books. There’s no way. I think we would’ve known. That detail would’ve been a big deal to the Order. (Trying not to spoil it for others, so hopefully you know what I mean. ?)

The plot and story of Cursed Child is absolutely garbage. But the visuality of the show is insane. It has a way of making everyone in the room go quiet at once and become one. So to summarize: I have mixed feelings about the story!

0
Reply
Nessa

I don’t consider it canon at all. The fact that J.K. Rowling didn’t even 100% write it helps a lot with that. I did see the play in London because I had bought tickets way before the script came out, but while I enjoyed the effects and the decor and everything, the story was just really bad and I don’t get how people can’t see it’s ridiculous (sorry not sorry).
