Potter Fans: Anyone else here a big fan of Harry Potter but hates “Harry Potter and the The Cursed Child” to the ends of earth?
Potter Fans: Anyone else here a big fan of Harry Potter but hates “Harry Potter and the The Cursed Child” to the ends of earth?
*raises hand* It kind of read like bad fanfiction. The only parts I liked were the ones with Scorpius, haha. That is one Harry Potter book I will never reread….
EXACTLY! I was so excited for the book to come out that I even preordered it but when I got the book and read it I wished I had never even heard of it. I don’t even consider that book a Harry Potter book. As far as I am concerned, It doesnt exist. Hermoine should have ended up with Harry, Ron doesnt have the wits to keep up with her and the book totally ruined Harry’s personality.
Totally agree. Just ignore it and it will go away, haha. Have you read Fantastic Beasts or seen the movie? I think it makes up for The Cursed Child immensely.
It does but the cursed child doesnt exist remember?
That was the worst book I’ve ever read. I hated it. It’s not cannon. It’s a fraud. I don’t acknowledge its existence.
EXACTLY!
Actually I havent read it and dont know if Im gonna do, I think is waste of time and money
Lucky, I wish I never read it, the book is awful
Don’t. If you like Harry at all, you will just skip it.
Yes I only bought Fantastic Beasts the screenplay ❤
I was very disappointed after reading it, but then Fantastic Beasts saved me.
🙂 The cursed child was the only hp book I hate
Yes! I really don’t think the plot fits. I agree that people change as they get older but could never could believe the main trio would end up so miserable. Nothing that made them lovable from Sorcerer/ Philisopher’s Stone through Deathly Hallows was present in CC! I found it very disheartening.
Plus, the pairings were wonky, Harry should be with Hermoine as Ron can never keep up with Hermoinie’s wits and Harry’s personality was totally ruined
Personally, I always liked Ron and Hermione together. He needs her wits and she could do with his humor. I feel like it’s a popular opinion now for people to say Ron was so mean to Hermione but look at how young they were! I said and did things I am now ashamed of when I was in middle/ high school. Ron came to really care for Hermione. I think it’s really sweet how Harry and Hermione are genuine friends without having to be romantic. But that’s just me! All opinions are valid here. ?
I was so greatly disappointed! I may never read it again and just pretend that it doesn’t exist.
?? me!!!
????
I read it and enjoyed it but… Albus was sooooo whiney.
SAME!
I haven’t been able to finish it yet. Bought it when it came out with the intention to read it all on my 8 hour flight. Didn’t make it though and haven’t felt compelled to pick it back up yet.
I dont believe you should finish it
I would say it was a disappointment but sure let’s go with banishing it to hell ?
LOL
I really disliked it. It was like a bad fanfic. Im glad I got it for free from work so I didnt have to pay for it. I will pretty much ignore it and I dont count it as cannon.
🙂
ALSO as a theater person Im very confused at some of the stage direction and how it would play out on stage. Obviously it works, considering how it was on stage in London and will be coming to Broadway, but I just couldnt picture it…..
I think I can only like it if I think of it as a fan fiction and not actually canon. Like I’ll take some parts of it as canon but others like the time turners and all that is head canon to me and you’ll never change my mind
I agree with you
Yes. I gave my copy away. I honestly wish I could unread it
My copy is in my shredder and when ever I remember the cursed child I shred a page. I am on page 53.
I gave mine to a friend over seas and the day she left to go back I said “you know, if you drop it in the ocean I wouldn’t really care”
I don’t hate it per say, I’m just upset with it. When I read Harry Potter books, I expect them to be long and tell a story. With the Cursed Child, it’s a play written in script form, so it doesn’t tell the story. You have to picture and imagine it yourself. I find it hard to try and picture anything without it being described. Maybe that’s just me, but it’s always been a problem for me. Probably why I could never write a book, if I can’t picture anything how could I write it?!
Cursed child was such a joke omg
I made it like halfway through, messaged an old friend expressing how much I disliked it, and she told me it isnt really worth the energy, so I put it down. BUT it looks wonderful on my shelf and I don’t intend on getting rid of it
I am shredding mine
Maybe down the road I’ll donate it to the library or something, but I JUST read Harry Potter for the first time this year and I’m getting alllll the HP stuff I can get my hands on ?
Have you read Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them? Is that one worth getting?
I’ll never consider it as one of the Harry Potter books lol
Same here
Me too. ?
It wasn’t my favorite that’s for sure. However, I REALLY want a prequel with the Marauders
Yes! I really want to see Adam Driver as Snape. ?
🙂
I did not hate it, but I was not very impressed with it either.
I don’t exactly hate the cursed child. But I would have loved it to be a book like the previous ones. 🙂
Represent! HPcc was full of cliches ?
ME!!!
?? IT WAS AWFUL. The only redeeming thing was Scorpius and Albus and they ruined that too. #scorbus
It was terrible. I have read a LOT of scripts between school, auditions, directing, and teaching theatre. This one was just very badly written. It isn’t cohesive, it doesn’t stick to the characteristics of previously developed characters, there is practically no character development, and what development there was is forced and contrived. There was no preparation for what happened. It was like the writer decided “Oh! I need a bad guy! I totally forgot that… oh, lets use *spoiler!* then I can wrap this up in five and still make it to the pub!”
Thank God, I thought I was the only one!
I’m not a fan of much beyond the original series and movies. I don’t like reading plays in general.
I haven’t read it yet.
Havent read it yet either but I kinda hate the way it is, I want a real novel and not a script
I loved it. But then, I don’t like the other books. Whoops.
The cursed child is a a fan fiction! And I don’t have anything against fan fiction(they’re grat and fun and keeps the juices flowing) but it’s the fact that it was a bad fan fiction and not researched really well.
I thought it read like fan fiction that was written by someone who was not a fan and knew only the basics of the story.
@Erin exactly! No research at all!!
I refuse to even give it a second of my time, because I am a purist. As far as I’m concerned, it’s just authorized fanfic. Blech.
I am reading g it right now and don’t like it
Tried a few pages and never read it again.
I wish I had returned my copy. I hate it.
Memememmememe and me
I actually love it, and I feel like the odd one out ….
I felt that way too, I didn’t think it was so bad, I enjoyed it, and then everyone was like “Blech this is awful!!” and I was like, “….It is??” 🙂
@Sarah right! And I enjoy reading scripts so that was a nonissue for me
It was funny, I liked it, made me laugh 🙂
I’m with you! ?? Potterhead for 20 years here and I’m currently collecting my 15th set of the books which I re-read at least once a year. I didn’t approach Cursed Child as though it were the eighth book in the series; I just was pleased to have another, new glimpse into the Wizarding world and it totally lived up to my expectations when I went in in that frame of mind!
Loved it too!
It is like the worst fan fiction that has ever existed. I wish I had never read it.
And I have read some AWESOME HP fanfic that I would have happily paid for if it had been published! THIS was not it!
Agreed!
Yep cant stand it
When I got to the part about the Trolley Witch, I almost put it down to never pick it up again. I was done. SO STUPID. But I was invested at that point. And curious. And Jo’s name was on the cover. Although it’s blatantly obvious that the names of her characters were the only involvement she had in it.
So I continued on after the Trolley witch scene and it never got better.
As I closed the back cover when I’d finished, I felt like I’d been lied to and cheated on.
Me
CC was T R A S H
I saw that it was a screenplay and put it down. I have no interest in reading it.
#cantrelate
No, I actually really liked it. I feel like if it had been an actual novel people wouldn’t hate it so much.
Personally it was the content I didn’t like. I don’t care what format it’s in.
Agree. I liked the format, hated the plot. It made no sense.
Made sense to me, but if you don’t like it that’s your choice. I, however, really did and while I don’t think it’s the best in the series it certainly isn’t trash. The biggest reason I see people give for not liking it is the format it’s written in, so I stand by the statement that if it had been a novel it would have been better received.
Trash is the Twilight saga and Fifty Shades of Grey, not this.
Yep. Cursed Child was an abomination :/
YES
????
I haven’t read it but I’m a theater person and I hate to say it but when people comment about character development lacking or this or that I can’t help but want to say “it is a play if you want to see development or (fill in other blank here) go and see the actual play if you can”
You can see the building blocks of character development in a well written script. This did not have those.
heck yeahhhhh it’s not real Harry Potter smh
Loved it
I never acknowledge the Cursed Child as a part of the Harry Potter series for it was not written by Rowling.
Wait it wasn’t?
Honest to God I have not read anything after the last HP book. For me, it ended with that book. My daughter has read the others, but she didn’t grow up with the series like I did!
I don’t hate it to the end of the earth…but I was hoping for better It’s a screenplay so you kinda have to go see it to get the better feel of it…I want to see it
I don’t hate it as I never finished it for myself. I couldn’t get into it, but I did spoil myself through Mugglecast lol
Didn’t like it. But I went into it expecting Harry Potter #8 and not letting it be the play that it is.
Hate it!
I don’t hate it. I like to think of it as really good fan fiction. But when I just reread the series and finished last week…it was 7 books and that’s it
Meeeeee
I love Harry Potter but I haven’t read Cursed Child and I’m not planning to.
I think it is a bad fan fiction…
What’s cursed child? I’ve never heard of it it’s like it doesn’t exist at all
which is the only mindset I can have after reading that mess
Me
I just don’t consider it as canon)
Yes! It was terrible!!
Tbh the characters were sooo ooc. The plot was plain rubbish
Meee
I just have a strong dislike lol
Yes. Yes. Yes.
It read like a bad fan fiction ?
Yeeeeeeees
??
I think it’s okay. but I read it the same way I read the “Carry On” parts of Fangirl, and not like an eighth Harry Potter book.
Me. Definitely me.
Oh God yes. I hate that thing I don’t even acknowledge it to be canon, I’m sorry but it’s…. So so bad…
If you started it expecting thr 8th book, you didn’t like it. If you took it as its own thing, you may have. I loved it. But I also knew it wasn’t an 8th book.
I took it as it’s own thing, but I just thought the storyline was absolutely terrible.
I thought it was great. To each their own.
Also, I said may have liked it.
Yeah, I hate it as it’s like Fanfiction not the 8th book but the only thing I like about it is Albus being sorted into Slytherin & becoming friends with Scorpius.
Me…Definitely Me… ?
I haven’t read the book but it was given as a gift to me. Without trying to spoil, can I know why it’s “bad”?
I don’t hate it because for me it’s not part of the canon. It’s a fun play that has no conection to the original series.
#notcanon I think it’s a fun play, I haven’t seen it but only heard good things. It reads like fanfaction though. I can’t see it as canon.
It’s funny, but it’s fan-fiction imo And none of the characters feel right.
The plot is pretty poor too, but it is funny at the beginning.
Yes definitely
I didnt like it either. I remember being sooooo excited for finally getting to read it and then, when I finished it, I was just like… meh. To me, it was just like a bad fan fiction. But maybe that’s the problem, we had our hopes so high, bc we had read soo many fanfics and we all had our idea of how the characters would? Idk, I dont want to say straight out that it was crappy, but… it was?
At least we got fantastic beasts on that same year tho, and idk about you but I LOVED that!❤
Me ? , if it wasnt a play it may be great
I personally loved the book to be very honest. And i even cried while reading it. I love it so much and i just dont know why ppl dont like it muxh
Much*
same??
YES YES AND YES
I don’t hate it, but don’t love it because its a play. It was never meant to be read like a novel. It would obviously be better to go see the play than read the book. Without the set design, costumes and other details it reads very shallowly which makes sense.
Yesss, absolutely
I loved the HP books, not the other.
i dont hate it, but i dont like it either.
It wasn’t my favorite.
Honestly, I feel like the only Potterhead who *likes* TCC. Sure, the story’s a bit lacking, but since I *love* going to see plays (and Snape) I enjoyed it.
I know a few people who hated it as a book but liked it as a play..
??????????
I don’t hate it, but I don’t view it as canon, which JK says it is. It doesn’t work as canon, but there are some parts of it I liked. And I really liked the idea of Harry sort of failing as a father. It made him more real. The series ended a little too “everything is a-okay” for me. I really liked Scorpius and Albus though. I like that they’re besties.
Exactly, the plot around the relationships is good and I love the characters, young and older alike (just how I pictured them to become) but the adventure plot is just so full of holes.
@Paty Agreed. The villain bothers me so much cuz I can’t see how they even exist. We were there with Bellatrix, in the books. There’s no way. I think we would’ve known. That detail would’ve been a big deal to the Order. (Trying not to spoil it for others, so hopefully you know what I mean. ?)
I honestly couldn’t get through it
I wouldn’t say I hate it but I definitely don’t like it
if you live in Australia this might be exciting. http://mashable.com/2017/10/23/harry-potter-and-the-cursed-child-australia/#goRFUWLG8gqt
Apparently the show’s incredible visually but I felt the book was just endorsed fan fiction…
I nowhere near love it because its so ridiculous and the plot is kind of stupid and seems like fanfiction. BUT its not the worst thing and I don’t completely hate it since I can see the entertainment factor in watching it performed. However, I won’t treat the plot as canon because come on!
I don’t consider it a part of the Harry Potter series ?? It ended with Deathly Hallows. Thank you very much. ?
The plot and story of Cursed Child is absolutely garbage. But the visuality of the show is insane. It has a way of making everyone in the room go quiet at once and become one. So to summarize: I have mixed feelings about the story!
I don’t consider it canon at all. The fact that J.K. Rowling didn’t even 100% write it helps a lot with that. I did see the play in London because I had bought tickets way before the script came out, but while I enjoyed the effects and the decor and everything, the story was just really bad and I don’t get how people can’t see it’s ridiculous (sorry not sorry).
I did not hate it, I liked that albus and draco son were best friends. But the time travel wasn’t amazing x
