Ruth Rendell aka Barbara Vine. I can usually figure out plot twists a few pages in, but she is an excellent writer who can really keep you guessing. She’s prolific too. She wrote her first book in 1964 and kept writing until shortly before her death a year or two ago. Love her!!

I don’t read a lot of thrillers, but for one that left me mind blown – and up way past my bedtime – “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” by Iain Reid. One of those books that’s all the better by going in blind!

Jo Nesbo, a newer Scandivian writer. His books are clever and quite heavy.

If you haven’t read Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, it’s a must for thrillers.

P. D. James hasn’t been mentioned. Her mysteries are complex and her prose is beautiful.
