While I actually really like the book (and spent a month one summer having to read it over and over again for lack of other books while on vacation), I LOVE the movie and think it’s perfect, so I’m going to say The Godfather.
Haven’t seen the movie itself but the interview and a friend pointing out the fact he had the horn at the start made me realize this would be a twist
Plus this question says what movie was better than the book. Sounds like you preferred the book….. Hearts in Atlantis was another movie that missed most of the book.
The Shining is one of the scariest books I have EVER read. Way better than the movie – though Danny riding his trike all over the hotel in the movie was an incredible tension-builder.
Under the Tuscan Sun. How are these books picked up and made into movies, I wonder? What do producers see that the reader doesn’t? Often, they bear little resemblance to their written version.
I ordered Forrest Gump through my library and once I received it I realized that for such a long movie, the book is the size of a goose bumps book lol I haven’t read it yet and now I’m not sure I want to!
I have high expectations for Ready Player One the movie because the book was… Just so fucking obnoxious. The author went on a paragraph long expansion of why masturbation was so great, swapped suicide for “seppuku” in a non-sword-related suicide as described by a character in his book, and the rest of it read like a fanboys attempt at impressing his friends with esoteric knowledge. We get it, you’re a huge nerd and all us other nerds aren’t as nerdy as you.
Game of Thrones- the TV show is better than the book, just because of the timeliness of release. C’mon George RR Martin – get the final book released. (And then the books would be better than the show.)
Nerve is a book first?!?! Isn’t that the one with the “game” where money’s added to a person’s bank account when they complete a “dare” or somesuch?!?!
Hidden Figures
Bridget Jones diary ??
I have a sneaking suspicion that if they make Artemis into a movie that it will surpass the book..
What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?
book was actually not so bad
I liked the book.
No the book wasn’t bad I just liked the movie so much more. ??
The princess diaries …. without Anne Hathaway to look at it …nothing good was left
Brokeback Mountain. Have not seen the movie but anything has got to be more interesting than how tedious that novella was
Practical Magic
I reread it last month, and I agree.
Jurassic Park
World War Z
@Joe
Mazerunner
I have to respectfully disagree. I walked out of the theater. I’m still angry at the maze runner movies.
The book didn’t have enough character development for me. The world building was good, but I’m definitely more into characters than plot development.
Confessions of a Shopaholic.
I have more but I cannot, for the life of me, think of them.
While I actually really like the book (and spent a month one summer having to read it over and over again for lack of other books while on vacation), I LOVE the movie and think it’s perfect, so I’m going to say The Godfather.
The Notebook. Movie was so much better.
The Bridges of Madison County…
Hidden Figures
I heard the book is very technical
It’s very repetitive and is based on a longer time frame than the movie. It’s one of the very few times that I thought the movie was better
A Walk to Remember
I agree
i agree
I’ve wanted to read the book, but now I’m not sure if i should. I LOVE the movie
@Tessa it is set in the past. The movie version of the (then) present was better
The devil wears Prada!
2001: A Space Odyssey.
American Gods. I loved the tv adaption, but found the book to be a really hard slog.
The Dark Tower
That can be excused as the movie takes place AFTER the end of book seven
I don’t like it because they still omit a ton of stuff.
Haven’t seen the movie itself but the interview and a friend pointing out the fact he had the horn at the start made me realize this would be a twist
Plus this question says what movie was better than the book. Sounds like you preferred the book…..
Hearts in Atlantis was another movie that missed most of the book.
The Handmaids Tale (its a series but I thought it still could apply!)
Oh boy, this makes me want to really watch the series then, because I’m enjoying the book!! lol can’t wait 🙂
@Maggie I just didn’t enjoy her writing style but the story and everything is amazing! The show is so awesome!
I can’t wait to see it because I have heard nothing but good!!
Bridges of Madison County
Practical Magic
Jaws (though I did like the book)
50 shades of grey. Loved the movies. Hated the books.
Notebook
Maze Runner
The Firm
What Dreams May Come
Drive, its such an awful book but I love it
Stardust! I know a lot of peope like the book, but I did not. I liked the movie a lot though.
Princess diaries
Really? Don’t you suggest it to me?
I don’t think so.
The book is nothing like the movie, esp since her dad isn’t dead, he just can’t have more kids…..
American Psycho
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Swedish version)
The Devil Wears Prada.
Love that movie!
The book was terrible.
The Hobbit (*runs and hides from the hate coming*)
I would actually agree with the other three (The Lord of the Rings), but I didn’t even finish The Hobbit movies…
I read the book twice….couldn’t even get through the first movie, haha.
Sleeping with the Enemy
Power of one
I absolutely LOVE that book!
I agree with Nerve. I was so excited to find it but I didn’t like it at all. Loved the movie though.
The color purple
The Shining.
Ouch! I have to disagree with this one LOL
I thought the movie was scary. Years later I read the book. Both are excellent, but the book takes fear to a whole new level.
The Shining is one of the scariest books I have EVER read. Way better than the movie – though Danny riding his trike all over the hotel in the movie was an incredible tension-builder.
Yes. There are many visuals from the movie that will never leave my brain. Yet the book makes me appreciate Stephen King’s skill as a horror writer.
Really? Nerve? it was in my TBR pile. Although I watch the movie already,so I want to read it because i loved the movie.
The wedding date
I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels that way about Nerve! The movie was great but the book was so freaking boring!
Under the Tuscan Sun. How are these books picked up and made into movies, I wonder? What do producers see that the reader doesn’t? Often, they bear little resemblance to their written version.
Jaws
And
Silence of the lambs
Inkspot
How many times must I list 50 Shades of Grey?
The Choice
The Natural
Forrest Gump was a great movie. The book was terrible.
I ordered Forrest Gump through my library and once I received it I realized that for such a long movie, the book is the size of a goose bumps book lol I haven’t read it yet and now I’m not sure I want to!
Jaws.
A Walk In The Woods …. the book was bad … but the film was not much better ….
Audition (nothing like as sexy as film)
Dr Zhivago (nowhere near as epic)
Night of the Hunter (not as visual)
should I continue?
The Shining, awful book I thought, but liked the movie.
Practical magic
I have high expectations for Ready Player One the movie because the book was… Just so fucking obnoxious. The author went on a paragraph long expansion of why masturbation was so great, swapped suicide for “seppuku” in a non-sword-related suicide as described by a character in his book, and the rest of it read like a fanboys attempt at impressing his friends with esoteric knowledge. We get it, you’re a huge nerd and all us other nerds aren’t as nerdy as you.
The devil wears Prada
Hunger Games Series (they wrote a lot more in the books but in this case it was monotonous and made it difficult to get through)
Game of Thrones- the TV show is better than the book, just because of the timeliness of release. C’mon George RR Martin – get the final book released. (And then the books would be better than the show.)
If we’re counting tv shows, I’d say The Walking Dead too. Show is great but…. graphic novel…. need I say more?
@Landon my husband and I were catching up on the Fear the Walking Dead. I almost like that show better than the original. Almost.
I haven’t watched Fear the Walking Dead yet. I’ll have to check it out.
The first couple seasons are so so, but this last one is doing well!
The Shining. Sorry Stephen King, I tried numerous times and I just can’t.
Oh I read this post backwards..
The Help and Big Little Lies
Atonement
Any book written based on a movie is awful.
The Book Thief
Nerve is a book first?!?! Isn’t that the one with the “game” where money’s added to a person’s bank account when they complete a “dare” or somesuch?!?!
I liked LOTR movies better than the books. Loved the books too, but the movies were just brilliant.
