My partner asked if I wanted a kindle for Christmas. I’m not sure if I do or not. Hit me good ones as well as pros and cons

Take 100’s of books on holiday without worrying about excess baggage.
Love mine paper white.
Pros***
can read without the bedroom light on
Can carry anywhere in my bag ( not bulky)
You have as many books to read on your travels as you want .
Can download any book at any time also free ones from amazon.
Cons**
Don’t smell feel like a book ?
(But nothing stopping you still having a book if you find one )
Best of both worlds
Paperwhite
I spent a long time resisting a kindle because I love actual books. I got a kindle fire for reading at night because it has a back light. I also got a paperwhite for reading on holiday. I love my kindles! I have electronic books available on tap and it’s easier to carry than a bulky book. But…I do forget book names and authors because I’m not looking at a front cover all the time. X
All of the above
Haven’t read a paper book since I got my Paperwhite. I originally only bought for holidays!
@Adrienne me neither!
@Elaine that’s the first time anyone said that
@Adrienne Me neither
Total convert. Get a case so you hold it like a book. You can control the lighting, the font size ….would much prefer to use that than a real book now. I have a paperwhite
I dont like using a kindle although i appreciate its uses. You will have to make your own mind up. I still prefer a real book.
Yes yes yes it’s the best present that I’ve ever had!!
I love my kindle. It is great on buses and trains, I can read at night without switching on the light. I can download in many languages and read books in German, Italian, English and Spanish and I can use the dictionaries I downloaded to improve my language skills
Paperwhite. The brand new one is now waterproof I think which is great if you’re a bit accident prone like me. All of the above for pros. The only “con” is remember to pop it on charge so it won’t conk out when you’re in the middle of a really good book ?
I read far more since I’ve had a kindle and also read different genres and authors to what I read before. Wouldn’t be without my kindle
Love mine
Love my paper white! If I can’t sleep at night I can read it without disturbing anyone. So easy to get your next book when you finish one (even in the middle of the night!) You can have many books with you at the weight of your Kindle … It’s just lovely.
You can get books instantly too. And you can sign up for notifications about cheap and free books e.g. bookbub
I love my kindle paper white as it is easy to download and quick if you want a book there and then and also good for travelling. However, I do still really enjoy a proper book and if I had space to store them I would read more actual books
I love real books but I love my kindle too. I love being able to download samples and instantly get a new book. I love how light it is. I can hold it in one hand while my other arm is cosy under the covers. When I do read a real book it makes it feel a bit more exciting.
Can you still use over drive or Libby with the paper white?
Yes I use it all the time
I absolutely agree with all of the above. I always resisted as I love ‘real’ books and I do still buy plenty from charity shops but the reality is that when I come to choose my next book I nearly always opt for my kindle (paper white).
I agree with all of the pros listed above. It is light, easy to hold and I seem to read quicker. Am completely converted.
Cons? That’s easy. There. are. none.
Probably the first thing I would grab if the house were on fire – can’t live without it!
That’s what I always say! I say kindle then kids just to annoy them ?
I’m getting one ?
I love my Kindle, if you go out it’s easy to slip into my bag, it means I don’t have to fill my suitcase with books when I go on holiday, I can buy as many books as I like without my husband noticing ?? I can listen to audio books on it but it hasn’t replaced actual books for me I just have both and would recommend this to anyone.
Love mine. It’s lighter than a book, comfortable to hold, books are cheaper (usually, not all but the ones I buy are, before anyone takes my head off lol) no eye strain on the model I use. Downsides. I have the basic model so need a light on to read but same with books so ?
Erm… that’s it. Other than ‘it’s not a real book’ people get really wound up at us for using them ? and you find if you tell people you use one they will all start telling you how much they would never use it and how it isn’t a real book ? But we just laugh at those people while we carry our hundreds of books around with us in one pocket… that’s another plus point. ?
I love mine.
I was in the ‘i’ll never use an e reader because I love real books’ group. Then someone bought me a Kindle and I gave it a go. I love it! I still will always prefer the feel of a real book but my kindle is so useful. It goes everywhere with me. So easy and light to carry. One of my all time favourite gifts ?
@Amy ditto for me
I love my kindle paperwhite and take it everywhere, i have arthritis so its light to hold, i can increase the font when my eyes are hurting and immediately find and download a new book when i finish current one, i wouldnt be without it
Love my paperwhite, if you don’t like a book, get another without extra weight, it goes with me everywhere
Perfect for reading in bed. Not disturb anyone. I use but read books also
I keep going back and forth on getting one…..I don’t buy too many books because I’d rather use the library or buy at thrift shops. I use my library’s app and download on my phone so I feel like why get a kindle if I’ve got my phone. I usually always have one or several out from the library at one time and if I get more than I can read/listen to in 2 weeks, I just request again…my TBR list is large enough I don’t have to scramble to find a book if one isn’t available from the library.
Kindle screen is much bigger than your phone. You can download from your library for free. I love my kindle but I admit I download quite a few books….I can’t be a hoarder if it’s all nice and neat in my kindle. ?? right?
@Melodie but i listen and read at the gym and while i walk?? i need small. Lol
You can store more books on a Kindle or any e reader then you could ever store on real book cases which is a good thing . the only not good thing is you have to make sure it is kept charged and a Kindle or any e reader isn’t going to have the book smell.
Back light for reading in bed ??
I have a $50 Amazon fire and I don’t need the bells and whistles. I read EVERYDAY. I’ve read thousands of books on it since owning it for the past two years.
I travel a lot so it’s great to not have to carry so many books. Still love a real book though.
I love my kindle! Not just for reading but my music and movies too.
and surfing the web and for reading my email! I love my kindle.
If you get only one, get the Fire…works like a tablet. Great fir books too.
It’s one of the BEST investments I’ve made. I am wanting to get the new paperwhite and see if I like it
I love my nook! I get books from the library with out having to leave my house! Lol
I personally hated my fire for reading. Not only did it give me migraines because the screen but it’s a tablet so it’s distracting with all the apps and updates and stuff. I much prefer my Paperwhite. It’s strictly e-reader with none of the other stuff. And the new version is waterproof which is perfect for poolside or the beach or lake. Or if you’re the kind to read in the bath. You can still add library ebooks. You just have to go to whatever app your library uses on your phone and send it to your Kindle. I don’t find that a chore. And in sunshine there is no glare like with a tablet. Unlike a tablet you can see the screen and actually enjoy reading outside.
@Amber fires are soooo bad for your eyes as far as reading goes
@Kayla I can’t read on screens like phones or tablets. Gives me a migraine. I can read for HOURS on my Paperwhite just like with a physical book.
@Amber yep I was wondering why I was getting so many migraines and then my doctor revealed it to me that kindle fire types are bad for you
@Kayla oh yeah. I got the fire for library books and just could not read. It was miserable. I finally got myself a Paperwhite on prime day. So glad I did.
@Amber I had a fire the first generation one and it was so heavy but I hated it. I used it for its whole life span though, and got the kindle paperwhite and I FELL in love with the basic kindle so I upgraded to the new oasis as soon as it came out and I even bought my mom a paperwhite for mother’s day last year, I love how simplistic they are…
@Kayla I got the fire 7 back about….3 black Fridays ago. It’s basically just a tablet and my kid uses it for Netflix.
@Amber they are actually listed as tablets on the Amazon site which is exactly why I went with the ereader. The ereaders are gutless but great
@Kayla exactly. I just wanna read. No frills. I do like that it asks if you wanna mark the book as being read on Goodreads when you open a new one.
@Amber I always keep my kindle on airplane mode so it never updates mine at ?
Pro you can carry all books with you ..con you put book stores out of business my city just had three close
Another thing I like is its lightweight. I feel like I can whip through a big huge book very quickly or any book ti be exact.
I love that! It doesn’t make my arm heavy when reading 600+ page book
I love my tablet. (I use the kindle app) I can store thousands of books without having to make room in your house.
Con is everything a kindle does so does your smart phone, also uses a charger another device to have data for (if you do that), I’ve had mine not even a yr I read on it but mostly use it to watch YouTube and prime because I read books on my phone cuz I don’t share my phone but everyone uses my fire tablet. But I do like that I can have 2 books Goin at once on two devices lol frees up my phone for pics. So I like it but I read more on my phone then my tablet.
@Alena kindle and kindle fires are different. Fires are more of a tablet. Regular kindles are strictly for reading.
Wow thanks for telling me I’m stupid this is a book club not a treat people stupid club.
@Alena I didn’t say you were stupid. I was just clarifying the difference wnt case anyone wanted to know what the difference was between a kindle and a fire.
I have the older kindle paper white with whispernet. I love it but I don’t use it all the time. I love holding a book too. The best thing to be about a kindle is taking it with me. If I finish my book I just start another without carrying a bag of books along. Amazon also has free books.
@Deanna what’s whispernet
@Kayla it’s their internet. Works anywhere with no WiFi so I can download books from literally anywhere. I’m not sure they offer it in any new kindles though.
@Deanna ohhhh
I have a kindle and love it, I have had both the paperwhite and the oasis. I love my oasis but I would get the new paperwhite if I could.
Here’s my scoop… I love books. Real ones. Especially library books bc I can just imagine the people who read the book before me really enjoying what I am currently reading. I love the pages. I like the weight and the feel of the real thing.
But… kindles are fun too. You can go onto Amazon and download free samples of almost ANY book and you have the first few chapters delivered to you instantly. It’s like shopping for books before you go buy that book. You can do this on rainy days and or all night. It’s fun! I’ve found so many books that I might not have seen in the bookstore right on my kindle bc browsing is easy. If you like this book, you might like this one – download a sample of that book. You might find something cool right then!
Plus, kindles are small and you can always keep a classic in there (lots are free) just in case you are stuck somewhere and you don’t have your current read with you.
I love mine. It’s a useful toy for me. And you could download a movie or two if you have to fly somewhere. Lots of uses. If someone wants to gift you one, by all means let them. You don’t have to replace books with this but a kindle is a cool tool. I have the kindle Fire – it was my dads years ago and I love it.
Obsolete
I love real books but I also love my kindle paperwhite because it makes it easy and comfortable to take as many books as I want with me on holidays or trips or even to the doctors waiting room. It is also great for reading on the beach in sunlight. It will never replace real books but it means I can read in different situations much easier
I adore my kindle, but I think Beth (above) has put it perfectly!! x
Kindle readers can buy a book at the touch of your hand. I read in bed and they are easier to hold. Can adjust lighting. That said I like books too. I can always look back and have any book I’ve bought at the touch of my fingers
If I was forced to choose between a regular book and my Kindle I would take my Kindle Paper White. I can take it pretty much anywhere and it gives me access to hundreds of other books in my library right away when I’m done with one book. Lighting conditions are no problem. It’s lightweight, easy on my eyes, tucks easily into my purse. It’s just one of my favorite things ❤️
@Katie agree
I say no Bc I have an iPhone and an iPad and there’s a kindle app for free that can be downloaded and it’s the same through the app you can still buy off of amazon can still get free kindle samples which are delivered to the app … for me after downloading the app I see no need for another device I have to carry around plus your phone is almost always on you so if I’m sitting at the doctors office I can pull up the kindle app and start reading … when I had the physical kindle device I was always forgetting it at home or had just too much to carry
I had that same view until I hit my 40s and suddenly my eyesight is crap and I had to make the font so large on my phone it was ridiculous. On the iPad it would be better but that’s a lot heavier than a Kindle and harder on the eyes. Just my opinion.
@Jennifer yes same for me and most books have audio option. I don’t personally like to be read to but some do. I would definitely go with paper white if your an out doors person at all. No glare
@Katie the back lighting on iPads and phones aren’t that good for your eyes anyways that’s why you shouldn’t stare at them for prolonged time
@Kayla totally agree. That’s why I much prefer my Kindle. It’s amazing!
@Katie I love my oasis. I was getting tons of headaches when I was using my kindle fire and I NEVER truly knew why & then I switched to my paperwhite which I had before my oasis and that’s when I realized it was maybe from my fire. So I asked my eye doctor and he was like yes.
@Jennifer iPads and phones are very hard to read in sunlight. I was waiting for a replacement kindle a couple of weeks ago and read off my phone but it was awful. I could really feel the eye strain
@Elaine ah I never had that issue but I understand everyone is different
You can borrow books from the library to read on your Kindle and not have to wonder what kind of disgusting environment they were in before you touched them. Also, my Paperwhite only needs to be charged about once a month or so. You can adjust font size. You can adjust the lighting. You can read without disturbing somebody else. You can carry it everywhere you go. I did not want a Kindle. I was secretly disappointed when somebody gifted one to me. It’s all I read anymore.
Kindle Paperwhite Gen 7. The one they have been pushing – $80, long battery life (weeks), portable and you can read in the dark. They’re pretty sturdy also.
I had one gave it to my daughter. I have to many b9oks to read as in proper books
Paper White! Great to read at beach or in the sunlight or outside. Also great to travel with…you can put 100s of books on this-much better than taking the actual book.
Paperwhite is lovely, but if the budget is bigger, the Oasis is wonderful!
@Jennie is it really worth the extra, now the paperwhite is waterproof?
Depends where you’re going to read it, I suppose! I found it worth it because it’s smaller and lighter, and my hands aren’t so good now, and I was finding the PW uncomfortable to hold. I read in bed and I kept dropping it on my face! They’re both marvellous though. I have my PW to my 83 year old Mum, and she’s grasped it brilliantly and loves it. You will never run out of things to read!
I love mine
I have loved my 1st generation Kindle fire for many years. Never had a problem. Unbeatable for travel, I have my books and it’s an extra internet device. I can read outside if I shade the screen. ??
Cons are really just making sure you take care of it, and charging etc. I have had my kindle fire for at least 4 or 5 years and it’s always served me well. It holds a charge for weeks on airplane mode, as I hardly use it for internet. Tons of books at the fingertips, in case you get a desire to jump between books.
I have a kindle and totally prefer holding a paper book.
They are great for holidays, saves taking a lot of paper back books!
I am a total kindle convert. You can keep all your books in one place and organise them electronically and there is a dictionary
I love my Nook!! I can get a new book anywhere, anytime!
I was totally against e-readers until I sold the 4 bedroom house and downsized (empty nest + divorce). Now I can’t imagine my life without it. There no libraries or bookstores near me now – and love Kindle Unlimited, have found numerous new authors.
Just a question…What is kindle unlimited?
It’s a service through Amazon for $10.99/mo (I think) you can read an unlimited number of books in their offering. I read mostly murder mysteries and there are a ton on there. Right now they are offering 3 mos at .99/mo
oh brilliant 🙂 Thank you 🙂
Welcome to the dark side, life’s fun with a kindle ?
I’m not much of an ebook reader tbh but I love the kindle for reading on the go
Some love kindles but for me you can’t beat good old fashioned paper pages you can turn!
I don’t love the Kindle. The app store is SERIOUSLY lacking. I would suggest a tablet with the Google Store or an iPad. In the Google store, you can download the Kindle app and have all your books there. Not sure about an iPad.
@Elizabeth that’s the fire tablet, not the kindle. The kindle is an e-reader which reads just like a book ?
@Elizabeth Fire tablet is different from just a Kindle. Love my Kindle because I can’t get distracted by other apps.
@Greg You know, you’re right! I forget there’s just a reader.
@Elizabeth years ago I never thought I’d be able to use one – now I’m a total convert ?
@Greg I’ve tried, but I do better with audiobooks. Single mom, so someone is always wanting something. I get to “read” on the way to work.
Love my kindle
I recently got a Kindle and I do enjoy it, but I like shopping for books on my Nook. I like Barnes and Noble more than Amazon. I love both devices because of the back lights and no need to use bedroom lights at night. I miss the feel of a real book sometimes.
My husband insisted he would never replace a book with a Kindle, but he has hardly put it down since he unwrapped it a few years ago. No more going out to buy books, he finishes one, presses the buy button and starts the next book. Between the both of us we couldn’t move for books, but now we have plenty of space while still having the books stored out of sight to check back to if we ever choose. And they don’t need dusting. ?
My kindle is fantastic. You can get a new book in seconds❤️. Love it
I have a tablet and love it! We have 7 libraries scattered in our county and if I do not want to order a book and have to wait I get on my tablet and instantly have a book to read no driving. I can also order audio books.
If the library does not have a new release I can request it as well and do not have to pay for it.
It’s good to have a choice. It’s great for holidays when you want to travel with multiple books. Can always revert back to paper when you’re home again x
Kindles are amazing! I especially like them to read in bed. Paperwhite
