Jodi Piccoult “The Pact” is a great one. Ellen Hopkins is really good. I just finished the Patience series by Beth Fahlbaum and the Breathing series by Rebecca Donovan. All of them will rip your heart out. It took me probably a week before I could pick up a new book after the Breathing series.

Not sure about the poster, but I like to read books about sad things when I am sad. It is a comfort to me to know that other people are struggling too, even if they’re fictional.

A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki. I’m just about to finish it. In the beginning I thought that it was odd, but it managed to deliver a heart-wrenching story that changed me. I whole heartedly recommend it even though the style is different to many other books.

Hi Rihab
If you want to read the most accessible non fiction book about suicide – which takes into account the authors own experiences – ( he shared a house with Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath – but unsuccessfully tried to commit suicide at a time when it was illegal to do so!!!!!)
Then I recommend ‘ The Savage God ‘ by A Alvarez – it looks at the history of suicide and societies/ religious views as well as the cultural exploration if suicide.
It’s a very absorbing read full of information and insight – worth reading alongside a work of fiction.

I guess having reached 60 lately and having lost friends and close family to suicide over the years I do understand the fascination with suicide amongst people especially the young – I was young once and could get excited by Camus’s quote – I paraphrase ‘ The only choice man has is whether to commit suicide or not ‘ now that might be intellectually exciting to an existentially inclined teenager with his head up his/ her a**** but to a kid at home being raped or abused by a family member or a kid being mentally tortured at school or on the Internet by the Pack – then the choice of suicide looks like a welcome way – why else would a 15 year old boy /girl hang themselves when they have the whole world ahead of them??????!! ”

So my comment is that ok this is an issue too look at but definitely not treat in a romantic way – believe me from experience the devastation a family suicide brings you never forget – so I would like to see as much effort going into books that try to dissuade any person who goes down this road – this cul de sac that leads nowhere but to death and untold misery for others touched by this tragedy –
Give me life affirming books – books that make life worth living – that make me want to get out of bed in the morning.
If not then give me dear friends and a loving family – helplines and angels who give up their time to talk to people in real despair – fascinating subject suicide but in life / reality a sad / dreadful consequence for all to live with. Love to you all Mal xx
