Jodi Piccoult “The Pact” is a great one. Ellen Hopkins is really good. I just finished the Patience series by Beth Fahlbaum and the Breathing series by Rebecca Donovan. All of them will rip your heart out. It took me probably a week before I could pick up a new book after the Breathing series.
The Last Time We Say Goodby, I Was Here, 13 reasons why, Me Before You, This Is Where It Ends, If I Stay, Ruin, Making Faces, Ugly Love, We Were Liars, Speak, Bridge to Terabithia, Blink Once, P.S.: I Love You Now most of these are sad through the whole story, just some have sort of happy ending. If you want more of those, I can write more. It’s sort of one of my favourite genres
Not sure about the poster, but I like to read books about sad things when I am sad. It is a comfort to me to know that other people are struggling too, even if they’re fictional.
i wanna do that because honestly my life right now is suck so i thought by reading a sad books i can just feel better a little bit anyway we have something in common Suicide and maybe i just wanna learn from their experiences it gives me hope ……….hope that was convincing enough
By your answer here, Room is going to give you hope…I wish I had my book done, so you could have that one too! It deals with hope within those things . Take care
A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki. I’m just about to finish it. In the beginning I thought that it was odd, but it managed to deliver a heart-wrenching story that changed me. I whole heartedly recommend it even though the style is different to many other books.
@Bethany I thought it was really good! I read it a few years ago. It basically follows the story of this guy who is struggling with stress and depression so he admits himself into the psych ward of a hospital.
Hi Rihab If you want to read the most accessible non fiction book about suicide – which takes into account the authors own experiences – ( he shared a house with Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath – but unsuccessfully tried to commit suicide at a time when it was illegal to do so!!!!!) Then I recommend ‘ The Savage God ‘ by A Alvarez – it looks at the history of suicide and societies/ religious views as well as the cultural exploration if suicide. It’s a very absorbing read full of information and insight – worth reading alongside a work of fiction. Mal
It’s Kind of a Funny Story, Prozac Nation, Bell Jar, A Man Called Ove, My Mad Fat Diary 1 and 2 (especially 2). Also, I think that you should seek help if you’re feeling depressed and cannot see a way out of this life.
13 Reasons Why and Playlist for the Dead are both YA books about suicide. I’m also writing my own at the moment which you can find out more about here: https://writerpoetstoryteller.tumblr.com/
The Most Dangerous Place on Earth by Lyndsey Lee Johnson. This ones great because you get to know all sides to the story and see that everyone has their own issues.
All the bright places, My heart and other black holes, The last time we say goodbye, Playlist for the dead, Love letters to the dead and ofcourse TH1RTEEN R3ASONS WHY!!!!!!!!
I guess having reached 60 lately and having lost friends and close family to suicide over the years I do understand the fascination with suicide amongst people especially the young – I was young once and could get excited by Camus’s quote – I paraphrase ‘ The only choice man has is whether to commit suicide or not ‘ now that might be intellectually exciting to an existentially inclined teenager with his head up his/ her a**** but to a kid at home being raped or abused by a family member or a kid being mentally tortured at school or on the Internet by the Pack – then the choice of suicide looks like a welcome way – why else would a 15 year old boy /girl hang themselves when they have the whole world ahead of them??????!! ”
So my comment is that ok this is an issue too look at but definitely not treat in a romantic way – believe me from experience the devastation a family suicide brings you never forget – so I would like to see as much effort going into books that try to dissuade any person who goes down this road – this cul de sac that leads nowhere but to death and untold misery for others touched by this tragedy – Give me life affirming books – books that make life worth living – that make me want to get out of bed in the morning. If not then give me dear friends and a loving family – helplines and angels who give up their time to talk to people in real despair – fascinating subject suicide but in life / reality a sad / dreadful consequence for all to live with. Love to you all Mal xx
Hi Karen I lost a niece in her twenties and a sister from an alcoholism related action that led to her death – it was a form of suicide, We are all scarred for life I’m sorry to hear of your brother’s death. Tragic for you all. So sorry. Malx
That’s what I want to read too.
