Looking for ideas for a 12yr old boy to read. He has already read all the Harry Potter books, and is looking for some summer reading. Any ideas??

Mine 12 yo is reading The cabin of uncle Tom (in Russian translation) but to be honest I push him to read books. In my childhood I read and reread Uncle Tom several times. My eldest doesnt like reading but this time he at least doesnt seem boring and even a bit interested.

My son devoured the Harry Potter books & then was disappointed by everything else he tried to read. We finally Last Week found a series that he says is Almost as good. Holly Black & Cassandra Clare’s Magisterium series. The 1st in the series is The Iron Trial. There are 5 books & he read that one in a day. Blood shot eyes from reading but a smile on his face.?

There are some books by S.J. Kincaid which I can’t remember the titles of, but my nephew liked those too. Also, maybe more geared toward girls, but I think boys can enjoy them too…Colleen Houck’s series. She has a couple now. One is based on Indian mythology and has tiger shifters and the other is based on Egyptian mythology and has mummies.

Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card, it kicks off into a series of direct sequels that continue to follow Ender (starting with Speaker for the Dead, then Xenocide) and also a couple spin-off series that follow main characters and siblings from the first book. All are quite excellent and immersive.

For more fantasy fare, he might enjoy the Redwall series from Brain Jacques. Wikipedia has a handy list of the books in ‘in universe’ chronological order, as it differs slightly from the actual publishing date order.

This is a list of modern Caribbean books for teens – Gone to Drift, All Over Again, (my own) Musical Youth, and Children of the Spider have young male protagonists https://wadadlipen.wordpress.com/2018/03/29/barbados-guyana-and-bermuda-finalists-for-2018-burt-award I also have a book called The Boy from Willow Bend which is a coming of age book. My own reluctant reader also liked Littletown Secrets by K Jared Hosein and at least one book in the Caribbean Adventure series by Carol Mitchell . Beyond the Caribbean, books that come to mind are S E Hinton’s The Outsiders, Louis Sachar’s Holes, Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer, William Goldman’s The Princess Bride, a book I’m currently reading Angie Thomas’ The Hate You Give (which is soon coming out in movie form), I think also deals with contemporary issues through a relatable young (female) protagonists’ pov (it’s a bit heavy but no more so I think than the Hunger Games series) – which reminds me, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee – E. B. White’s Charlotte’s Web, Scott O’Dell’s Island of the Blue Dolphins. Other popular series I haven’t read but which seem to be popular are the Harry Potter and Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. And like someone upthread said comics are always a good way to go.
