I absolutely love James Oswald’s Inspector McLean series – crime with touch of the occult making it a little different -there are currently 8 books in the series with a new one coming out next year. (y)
I also love Denzil Meyrick’s DCI Daley series.
Sharon Bolton’s Lscey Flint series
Harlan Coben’s Myron Bolitar series has already been mentioned
Camilla Lackberg’s Patrik Hedstrom & Erica Falck series
Kristine Ohlsson’s Fredrika Bergman & Alex Recht series – both Swedish authors, so pretty dark books.

Let’s see… the Inspector Lynley books by Elizabeth George is a personal favourite.

Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle have been mentioned already… Colin Dexter maybe, if you like the classics.

If you like or prefer contemporary American detectives the Rizzoli and Isles series by Tess Gerritson are good, imho.

Another one if you decide you might want to try something a bit different, because it’s as much a fantasy series as it is a detective series, are The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.
