I really enjoyed it. Quite harrowing in parts but that’s to be expected. It’s got a nice ending and is a true story.

I’ve just picked it up but I don’t really read true story’s they upset me too much but I thought I’d give it a try Thankyou x

0
Alison

Obviously at times it’s a Difficult read but the way I look at it is these people had to go through it, I only have to read it and get some understanding of what they went through. It wouldn’t be fair to you to say it’s anything but, however it is a love story so it’s heartwarming also. X

1
Alison

Maybe if you know they upset you Rebecca it might be just as well that you don’t? Just be prepared x

I know they upset me but I’d like to get some insight on what people went through it’s such a awful thing that happened x

Just finished it the other day (devoured it in hours) it’s harrowing but gripping. It was originally going to be a screenplay so it has a pacey flow that makes it easy to read.

I totally agree. The writing is quite basic. I thought it was good but not brilliant. It ended a little strangely like in a rush to tell the last parts of the story.

1
Joanne

It’s ok. Feels like a big rush at the end to get loads of facts out. I understand it started out as a screen play and I think that it is more appropriate genre. Good, moving story though

I’ve read it. I think it was a poorly written version of what could have been a brilliant book. The writer is a screenwriter, not an author, and I think it showed. The story was pretty vague and woolly, she didn’t do the people it was about justice. I came away without any real idea of how each scenario truly made them feel.

Corinne

I agree. Did not like the style of writing & to be honest I doubted whether the story was accurate. I’ve read much better holaucast books than this. Can’t understand how it has rated so high. Too much hype

0
Louise

I agree Corinne!

0
Corinne

i feel bad giving a negative review of a book that everyone is raving about. But best to be honest

0
Ameera

How are the stakes?

0
Louise

I’m not sure what you mean, Ameera.

0
Ameera

You said the story was vague and woolly – mg question is did you feel like the stakes were high for the characters? Obviously given the genre I assume the characters have a lot to lose but did that come across in the novel, or were the stakes also a bit vague?

0
Louise

Well, given what we know about the Holocaust, I don’t think that you could read a book about internment in a concentration camp without knowing the inherent danger the prisoners were in. So it’s hard to read it without just automatically knowing what they faced. I found the relationship between Lale and his personal guard quite unbelievable, given what he “got away” with doing.

1
Ameera

Thanks! I still plan on reading it, but having an analysis and an honest review help

I think the story felt slightly emotionless in parts because the characters just weren’t able to ‘feel’ anymore and this was by intent. Certainly the main character was described as quite distant by his son in his personal conclusion but it’s hardly surprising considering what his father endured. It was true to life and an accurate account of the slightly skewed memories of the main character- just added to the authenticity in my view

If I was going to be picky I felt the end was a little rushed & you didn’t get a sense of how long it took for them to find each other??

0
Naomi

@Caroline i agree that is certainly part of of it, the ending seemed contrived rather than realistic. i think i also felt the writing was immature although telling an important story, they didnt quite manage to find the right balance between retelling a story and not making it too horrific to read, which it obviously was to live…. Thank you for helping me find the words to describe how I feel about the book.

Regardless of peoples opinions its still a true story of the horrors that went on. It is incredibly hard to portray just how bad it all was when writing someone elses story. I think the author did very well and gave the man whos story it was her upmost respect and gratitude for opening up to her
